FIJIS SERVE 1000 FOR BIG GAME
Over 1000 alumni and friends of Delta Xi enjoyed the buffet-style cuisine of Harry
Hart*prior to the Big Game. The event was held at the chapter house and was spon
sored by the Delta Xi Mother's Club. The members of the chapter as well as the
mothers would like to thank all those who attended. We are sorry to report, however,
that the success of this event was nearly overshadowed by the misfortune of the Gol
den Bears. *Our former trumpet-playing; cook who gained campus fame.
Gal Fijis can justifiably be proud of their receiving recognition for winning second
place among all the chapters in the newsletter competition. This is a national award
in the offset/mimeo division. Our thanks to the committee for this award. We'll
try to repeat next time, too! I I

COLLEGE FRATERNITIES CLAIM U.S. PRESIDENTS:
PHI GAMMA DELTA: THIRTI-ETH PRESIDENT OF U.S.
Twelve of the last 16 presidents of the United States have been members of nat
ional college fraternities. Presidents elected prior to Rutherford B. Hayes (term
1876-80) were of college age before the founding of the social fraternities, and had
no opportunity.
Hayes, the first presidentt to be a college fraternity member, was among the
founders of Delta Kappa Epsilon at Kenyon College in Ohio. He was followed by James
Garfield, Delta Upsilon at Williams College; Chester Arthur, Psi Upsilon, Union
College; Grover Cleveland, Sigma Chi, Columbia University; Benjamin Harrison,
Phi Delta Theta, Miami University of Ohio; William McKinley, Sigma Alpha Epsilon,
Allegheny College.
Theodore Roosevelt, Delta Kappa Epsilon, Harvard; William Howard Taft, Psi
Upsilon, Yale; Woodrow Wilson, Phi Kappa Psi, University of Virginia; Calvin
Coolidge, PHI GAMMA DELTA, Amherst College; Franklin Roosevelt, Alpha Delta
Phi, Harvard; and Harry Truman, who was initiated by Lambda Chi Alpha.
Of the four presidents who have not been college fraternity members; Warren
Harding did not attend college; Herbert Hoover was an early student at Stanford Un
iversity before the establishment of fraternities on the campus; Dwight Eisenhower ■
was enrolled at the United States Military Academy at West Point; and John Kennedy
attended Harvard (where theVe are no fraternities now), ho-wever, he is a member
if one of the clubs at the university which operates much in the same rnanner as
fraternities.
