FRATERNITY OF
PHI GAMMA DELTA
Phi Gamma Delta, constantly
ranked in the top three of all na
tional fraternities, is one of the old
est and most respected of Greek
social fraternities.
Founded at Jeff
erson College in 1848, today it is 87
chapters strong, with more than 50,C'OO members.
With a consistent record of strong
chapters across the country and in
Canada (Knox is currently rated the
best chapter), Fijis have made them
selves a corner-stone of the fi'atern-
ity system. From the Stanford chap
ter, to the ten chapters in the Big
Ten, to the Ivy League chapters, the
Fijis' spirit and hospitality has been
impressed on all those who come in
contact with them.
Among Phi Gamma Delta's more
distinguished sons, with over 1100
listed
in
Who's
Who,
are
Calvin
Coolidge, Christy Mathewson, Nor
man Vincent Peale and Norman
Rockwell. More recent Fijis include
athletes Bob Mathias and Jack Nick-
laus, and the singing group, the
Brothers Four.
Gamma Deuteron chapter at Knox,
dating from 1867, has a rich history
of its own.
Among the 1000 Fijis
who have passed through the Knox
chapter are two state governors, an
editor of the New York Times, and
Otto Harbach, the famed composer
of "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes." Six
current members of the Knox Board
of Trustees are Knox Fijis.
The year 1961 provides itself as
a rare opportunity to Knox Fijis: to
be the best, in what they feel is the
best of all fraternities. Phi Gamma
Delta.
KNOX FIJIS WELCOME THE CHENEY CUP, just presented to the chapter
for the first time by William S. Zerman, Executive Secretary of Phi Gamma
Delta.
Knox Captures Cheney Cup;
Rated Best of Fiji Chapters
Symbolizing all that is best in any
fraternity, the Orion H. Cheney Cup
now rests in the Knox chapter of
Phi Gamma Delta.
Awarded annually to the best all-
around chapter of Phi Gamma Delta,
the Cheney Cup represents the ulti
mate achievement to all 87 Fiji chap
ters throughout the country. It is
awarded
on
a
three-fold
basis
of
nation of a long period of ascend
ancy on the Knox campus.
Last year was not untypical of
Gamma Deuteron's record of achieve
ment at Knox. It included the presi
dents of both the fi-eshman and sen
ior classes, two Fijis elected to Phi
Beta Kappa, a Fulbright scholarship
winner, an all-conference and little
All-American honorable mention
football player, and first place in
evaluation: chapter relationships
with the fraternity, 40 per cent;
scholarship among all Knox's frater
scholarship, 30 per cent; and extra
curricular activities, 30 per cent.
ly begun, promises even more to
Never before has the Cheney Cup
been
brought
to
Gamma
Deuteron
chapter. In the previous year's rat
ings Knox was second only to the
University of Arizona Fiji chapter-
in the Cheney Cup competition.
Yet the Cheney Cup
cannot be
viewed as an award won within the
space of one year. To the Knox
Fijis, the Cup represents the culmi
nities.
Yet the coming year, as yet hard
Knox Fijis. Already within its fold
are the vice-presidencies of both the
Student Senate and the Senior Class,
the presidency of the Honor Board,
12 football letter-men and I-M volley
ball championship.
It seems obvious that Knox Fijis
have not decided to merely rest on
their record but intend to reach even
higher levels of chapter eft'eciency.
Gamma Deuteron has accepted the
challenge of the Cheney Cup.
