FIJFS LEAD LONGHORNS

Statewide Board Now
Boasts 49 Members
Tau Deuteron is duly proud of our Fiji Brother's on the Longhorn football squad.
Duke Carlisle and Tom Stockton are doing an outstanding job for the Longhorns and
Robert Leach is performing for the Yearling freshman team. Duke is a senior quar
terback from Athens, Texas who currently leads the Longhorns in total offensive
yards gained. A defensive specialist at safety his sophomore year and an alternating
quarterback last season. Duke has be

that all but three vacancies on the Board
have now been filled. The roster of

of the fraternity on everything from
house and lake club improvements to
scholarship improvement.
Aubrey Black was chosen to serve his

equally dangerous as a runner as he has
shown many times by running through
the opposition for numerous yards this
season. Duke again proved his defensive

The Board officially approved the
Chapter House Committee and that com
mittee will begin functioning with a first
meeting in mid November. The com
mittee had been meeting unofficially and
were instrumental in commencing the
long range furniture replacement pro
gram this fall.
This group will also handle the funds
collected by the $3 per-man-per-month
house tax which is being allocated out of
the present overhead. This amount ap
proximately $2500 per year will be used
to replace furniture, fixtures, etc. The
committee has contracted for the ser
vices of a professional interior decorator
for the next three years to act as ad
visor in such matters. Sonny Davis as
Purple Legionnaire will serve as chair
man of the committee.
Plans call for
Wives and Mothers Clubs throughout
Texas to supplement the funds of the
committee by fund raising projects.
A separate committee to determine the
long range expansion program for the
fraternity has been appointed by Ace
Black. Bill Seay will serve as chairman
of the committee and the new House
Committee will assist them in gathering
information as to ways and means for
keeping our physical plant in top order.
Thus, should any extensive improvements
or new construction be programmed, the
Statewide Board will play a large part
in the planning.

all proud of Brother Carlisle and of his
contribution to the Texas team and to
Phi Gamma Delta.
Fullback Tom Stockton at 6'1" and 195
pounds is one of the hardest runners on
the Longhorn team. A sophomore busi
ness major from Abilene, Tom has
shown outstanding ability by lodging a
considerable amount of playing time
thus far in the season. A linebacker on
defense, Tom was promoted to the first
team just before the Baylor game. Tom
proved his worth by blocking well and
scoring the winning touchdown. Against
TCU, Tom earned the title of BACK OF
THE WEEK by gaining 89 yards and
scoring the clinching touchdown. We are
looking forward to seeing Tom in action
in the Cotton Bowl and again next year.
Robert Leach, a 175 pound tailback for
the Shorthorn squad, has been tabbed
for future greatness by Longhorn Coach
Darrell Royal. A hard hitter from Jacks-

\r\nFinancial Report
Dear Brothers
Dear Brothers:
From all indications, it appears that
we shall survive the "specter of famine"
after all. For the past few years, the
The year has begun and is well on its
way for each one of us and for the Tau
Deuteron Chapter of Phi Gamma Delta.
I greet you with a sense of pride for
the achievements and accomplishments
that this chapter has made since our
last correspondence with you. We have
come from the depths of depression and
are well on our way to the heights of
prosperity continually as the days come
and go. The cabinet and the chapter
have met the problems that have faced
this chapter for the past two years and
chapter has been faced with a grave fi
nancial situation; but over the past year,
through the efforts of the undergraduate
and graduate chapters alike, our financial
complexion has changed from a bright
blushing red, to a dark, healthy black.
It seems that the most outstanding
factor in overcoming a financial crisis is
to make aware those people who are re
sponsible for it. And that's exactly what
Fiji Spotlight
have decreased their size in the same
happened. The chapter was made aware
that the financial condition of a chapter
manner that the Texas football team
decreases the size of any giant that
threatens its throne.
With the chapter at a very low mem
bership at the end of last year, we di
rected our attention to rush. Recog
nizing the need for an increase in mem
bership, we placed all guns on the top
rushees in the state and picked up 37
new pledges. In the field of finance, the
chapter has developed a very strict policy
on paying bills. This new system has
caused the chapter to stay well within
its budget and even now and then we
place a little money in the bank.
The policy for the chapter this year
is to maintain its attention on rush and
finance, and never again allow them to
go below the danger line. In addition to
these areas of fraternity activities, we
will put a great deal of stress and em
phasis on scholastics, Intramurals, rela
tions with national and graduates, social
activities, and our internal organization.
In each one of these areas we have al
ready progressed very satisfactorily and
will reach the top in each one of them
at the end of the year. We desire not
second or third; we desire only first and
first we will have.
We, the undergraduates, invite your
criticisms, ideas, energy, and interest to
accomplish our goal. And that goal is to
make this the finest chapter ever to be
found so that we all may say with pride,
"I am glad to be a Fiji."
Fraternally yours,

Under the able direction of rush cap
tain Corry Adams, Tau Deuteron pledged
thirty seven men to become future FIJIs.
Led by eleven men from Houston and
four each from Austin, Dallas, and San
Antonio, the new pledge class shows a
great deal of variety in their High School
activities. We are all very much in

We here at Tau Deuteron have begun
another outstanding year in intramural
competition. Manager Leland Allred has
year, the entire chapter is determined to
take it all and win the University Cham
pionship. Fiji A and B football teams
have won both the fraternity and univer
sity championships in their respective
divisions behind the passing arms of
John Roy Sharp, Ft. Worth, for the A
team and Rodney Satterwhite, Midland,
for the B team. Ends Mutt Heller and
Dean Greenwood have been on the re

while Rodney has been connecting with
Bill Fenoglio, Ken Ford, and Kenny
Powell on many of his touchdown heaves.
Congratulations to our football teams
for their well deserved titles!
With the coming of winter, Fiji basketbailers have begun to sharpen up in
preparation for the coming season. Both
the A and B teams look strong with
many players returning from last year.
As it appears now Honey Swanson,
Robert Ross, John Young, Glenn Gra

B team, and Leland Allred, Corry Adams,
Dean Greenwood, Ken Ford, and Jeff
Mundy will start for the A team. Also,
Bobby Wax appears to have a good

hope to have a University Champion
trophy by the end of the year.
