Collett—aid to Psi in post
boys owls for chapter house
Psi received a rather unusual gift last December when one of
her more noted alumni, John P. Collett, purchased two 430 pound
marble owls at an auction and presented them to the chapter.
At present the owls ha\e been placed on either side of the out
side entrance to the lix ing room, but, upon determination of whether
they are "inside" or "outside" marble, thev will either be left in the
living room or fastened to the

tops of the two pillars support
ing the roof of the front porch.
Needless to say, the owls, which
stand over three feet high, are
quite formidable in appearance.

to drift in, and, once again, Psi can look at itself proudly. Psi has
always done well in scholarship, and the last semester was no ex
ception.
Overall, the house had over a 1.75 at erage. Twenty-seven of

At their last meeting the Housing Association foresaw quite
clearly, I think, into the future of Psi when they raised house bills
by five per cent for the coming year. This $4.40 per man per
month will be put into a building fund in the hopes that when a
new chapter house is needed
across the street, tliis number is
something of which all of Psi can
be.extremely proud. Psi had over
somewhere in the neighborhood of
twenty years from now—Psi will not be forced to borrow money
from the college or anyone else to finance the new structure.
Even though 1 am not majoring in Economics, I can see that this
money, plus the money from the Harry Wright Duckworth en
dowment will furnish only about one half of the money needed.
If a new house is to be built, the remaining money must come
from alumni—specifically, from alumni who graduated under the
"House Note" plan and who, therefore, did not make any direct
payments toward a building fund while they were undergraduates.
a solid "B" average. Of these
twenty-s\ en 2.00 beaters, eleven
were on Dean's List. The sen
iors making this 2.5 or better
were Bob Boeder, Phil Miller,
and Jim Bond. But Brother Bond
didn't even stop here: he was the
senior 3.00 representative for the
fall semester. Junior Dean's Lister^ were Bill McCarty, Rhiman
Rotz, and Bob Lentz. Brother
Rotz ranked with Bond with his
own 3.00 this time around.
John Wilson was the sophomore
Dean's Lister.
Second initiation
activates Fuller
Psi will hold its second initia
tion within a month on March 2,
when sophomore pledge Jack
Fuller will be brought into the
brotherhood. Pins were already
placed on 19 freshmen in the
ccrcmonv of Feb. 4.
Jack (full name John Law

1 feel that the house owes quite a debt to Paul Husting and
the rest of the Housing Association for the work they have done
in the past year. In particular, I think that the work of Dr. Jess
Burks, who is both a member of the Housing Association and our
the Little Giant Fiji was one of pre
Purple Legionnaire, should be recognized. Although his pro
fession is very time consuming. Dr. Burks attended most of our
cabinet meetings and provided what I feel to be a somewhat
diction for our pledges. This one can
be an article of pride in onr newly

necessary "mature guidance" for the chapter.
In the year 1964 I am sure it is no news to anyone that the
national fraternity system is being subjected to some rather severe
criticisms. 1 say "is being subjected to" because 1 feel that, as
long as they keep within the accepted laws of the land, private
organizations have the right to run their organizations in any way
they see fit. Unfortunately, this currently does not seem to be the
case. For this reason, if for no other, I feel that our National Fra
ternity should take a clearly progressive stand on the racial issue.
While 1 might personally feel that the issue also has certain moral
implications, 1 do not feel that this point can be meaningfully dis
cussed. 1 do feel that to protect the existence of the entire Fra
ternity, we should all take a second look at what is best for "the
Fraternity as a whole."
