EDITORIAL-
Weigle Sends Affirmative Note;
Includes Contribution to Fund
We of Lambda recently learned that
this summer construction on a new house
will begin. Granted, this is only the beginning; an entire house will not be built,
but R is a beginning, a concrete start
t oward better living conditions for the
men of Lambda. We are very grateful to
all those alums who have contributed,
however 11arge or small, but as I said, this
is only tJhe beginning.
Just before we received word that the
ann ex was coming down, Tom Burgum,
our new president, then the editor of
the Tig-er Fiji, received this letter. I
rthink it would be fitting tio print it here
as a!1 example of What the Fraternity
of Phi Gamma Delta means to one man:
February 15, 1963
Mr. Tom Burgum, Editor
Tiger Fiji
Phi Gamma Delta
1002 So. College Ave.
Greencastle, Indiana
Dear Brother Burgum:
My compliments to you and Lambda
for your stand on the integration issue,
both in t;he Ekklesias and in the Tiger
Fiji. Lt was a reaI ple asure for me to see
t he chapter take a stand of t·his sort in
rthe face of possible financial loss intimated by the anonymous contributor to
the Winter Issue; especially in light of
the chapte·r 's urgent need for financial
assistance.
Both Lambda and Pi Gamma chapters
have taken the only present position
which is both morally just1ifiable in terms
0 1f the Fraternity's traditions, and also
realistic in ilght of today's changing college world. W ·hile there will certainly be
criiticisms of this posiUon, I cannot help
but feel tha•t many more Brothers wiU
respond favorably to such a show of integrity.
Not too many years ago Lamibda was
as reactionary as many of our Southern
chapters. We were sol1isi.t:ing Jior a building fund rthen also, and with much less
success than yo1!. are h1aying today. I
doubt seriously that there are any more
former members who are not con.tributing now than previously, and if so, I'm
afraid they never really understood what
the Frate1rnity was albouit. Ple1ase accept
the enclosed contribution to the building
fund as a token of my total agreement
with your ac:tions.
Congratul'a.tfons !
Sincerely and Fraternally,
RJichard G. Weigel, '59

class. This year the men of Lambda ven tured to McCormick's Creek State Park
on Friday afternoon. Mee1t:Jings under the
headings of Chaipter Affairs Pledge
Triainiing, Rush, and Scholarship were
held.
In the Spring of 1961 Lambda inibiated
this retreiaJt for the purposes of re-evaluatling the Chapter and its goals as an organli zation of young men. The weekend
at MoCo~mick's Creek is set aside as a
periiod of objective insight into the problems and traditons of the Fraternity. The
retreat was a tremendous success since
many changes have come about since it
was held. .A!Jiter returning to the house
Saturday 1afternoon, a banquet was held
in honor of the men to be initiated which
was followed by formal initiation at 7:30.
President's
Letter
Brothers and Inter ested Readers,
Phi Gamma Delta is more than just th e
name of a national fraternity; Lambda
Chapter is more th:an just a link in th e
nat ~onal ch:ain. The fraternLty, and specifically our Chapter, is a vibrant, dynamic gmup of men liv,i ng together in
probably the most impressionable period
of 1liife. 'Dhe s'triiviing for scholastic, social
and athl etic goals must be somehow
smoo thly m eshed into the daily routine
of group living and fr'aternHy responsibility.
My job as Lambda's new president is
inspirational, directional, pace-setting
Aaong with my fine cabinet, I must coordinate individual iniitiative with group
performance in a way that is beneficial
ito both. I.t is precisely this point that
h:as opened fraternities t:o so much critidsm. "11he individual's goals are suboTdinated to those of t.ihe grioup" is a
standard jibe. However much this may
ih'a ve been true in the pas1t, and however
little it may be true now, I assure you
thia t Phi Gamma Delta at DePauw
thrives on individual aCJhievemenit. Lambda Chiapiter is high in prestige, and more
important, in actual accomplishment, because oif t:Jhe drive, energy and enrt'husi1asm of certa'in individuals.
As I come to office IJhere i's ye.t muoh
unt;apped potential among the brothers.
Only wibh the help and support of graduates and friends wiill this potential be
realized.
Sincerely and friaternally yours,
Thomas L. Burgum
President
