PHI GAM POLE WINNERS
PLACE WELL IN LITTLE 500
Zeta had her ups and downs in
the Little 500 this year. Our
Little 500 bike team, composed of
Jerry Bradley, Steve Powell, Jerr
Danielson and Carter Jackson,
captured the pole position for the
race, on April 16, with the time of
5.82 minutes, breaking the
track record. This was four sec-
onds faster than the second place
qualifier and eleven seconds faster
than the time posted by the FIJI
team that sat on the pole in 1964.
The following weeks of practice
were dominated by Zeta’s team
who were burning up the track.
So, going into the race we, our
co-ed sponsor, Pi Beta Phi, and
our financial sponsor, Block’s Col-
lege Clothing Store, were confi-
dent of a second FIJI victory in
However, fate would not
have it so.
The FIJI’s led the first thirteen
laps of the race, but then we were
involved in a series of accidents
that dropped us from contention.
Even with these unfortunate acci-
dents and physical injuries the
PHI GAM team was able to fin-
ish in fifth place.
The week-end was brightened
up when it was announced that
we had two of a total of six All-
Star riders. Brothers Bradley and
Powell were the recipients of this

Steve Powell, a sophomore from
Indianapolis, is a two year rider
and has been an All-Star rider
twice. The winners of this award
are selected by the 132 riders
that participate in the race.
Our other two riders were Jerry
Danielson, a junior from New
Brunswick, N.J. and Carter Jac
son, a sophomore from Indian-
apolis.
We would like to thank Mrs.
Smith of Block’s and the Women
of Pi Beta Phi for their tremend-
ous support. THANK YOU!!

will be back next year.
