his back, turn his head and wink
at the parade watchers.
Riding inside the float and work

Pulling
the float was a large yellow duck,
driven by Phil Astell.
The float was the culmination of
several weeks of hard work. Sev
eral of the brothers gave up their
sleep the night before to add fin
ishing touches and to help maneu
ver the float into the parade line

However, as Saturday morning
dawned and an overnight rain
cleared, the Fiji's efforts proved
successful. The float faced tough
competition against all fraterni

parade is billed as the largest stu

in the State.
Evidently the judges thought the
float a real crowd pleaser as they

EDITOR'S CORNER
On a campus with a growing
Greek system, such as Indiana
State University, the strengthening
of both individual chapters and the
fraternity system as a whole is a
necessity. Contrary to some opin
ions, the Greek system is far from
dead. It is growing yearly and is
still far from its height. Neverthe
less, it should be every fraternity
man's goal and every chapter's
purpose to demonstrate the true
values that a fraternity promotes.
The Fraternity of Phi Gamma
Delta at ISU is just reaching its
one year mark, yet it has already
distinguished itself with a reputa
tion of fairness, friendliness and
politeness.
Gaining respect from
independents, sororities and other
fraternities, we Fijis have done

On March 27, 1971, the 98th
chapter of Phi Gamma Delta was
installed as Iota Sigma at Indiana
State University. Three weeks
earlier a jubilant Delta Colony had
received
notice
from
Executive
Secretary William S. Zerman that
we would soon become the seventh
Fiji chapter in Indiana.
A long and hard 15 months as a
Delta Colony had served' as a pre
requisite to the chartering. The
Iota Sigma Chapter was a result
of the work of the Terre Haute
Fiji Graduate Chapter. December
17, 1969, marked the formal be
ginning of ISU Delta Colony. This
beginning was the work of four
graduate brothers: Field Secretary
Philip E. Williams (Oklahoma
State '69), Terre Haute Graduate
Chapter President Donald R. Mighell (Texas '56), Assistant Grad
uate Secretary William R. Mlli'er
(Indiana '62) and Dr. Ralph H.
Jones (Cornell '43) who would
become the Purple Legionnaire.

Our spirit in activities speaks for

competitions at Homecoming.
But even more important than
our activities is our united brother
hood. The ideals of our fraternity
and even our fraternity motto,
"Friendship— -The Sweetest Influ
ence," reflect our basic desire to
form an atmosphere of congenial
ity.
Our values are of the highest
standard—too high perhaps to be
reached—yet it is this reaching
that helps us to continually main
tain our spirit.

and Craig Harker ('73). Brothers
also attended Fiji State Day in
Indianapolis thus reflecting our de
sire to become better acquainted
with the national fraternity and
other Indiana chapters. The Col
ony began its publication, Indiana
State Fiji, so that graduate and
undergraduate chapters of Phi
Gamma Delta could watch the
progress of our Colony.
The Colony was without a house
the first year on campus. But the
Tau Iota House Corporation led by
Robert Harker (Iowa State '43)
purchased a home for the chapter
just before the 1970-71 school year
began. The brothers started work
on the house immediately and sev
eral members moved in even
though the house lacked furniture
and adequate plumbing. During
this period Field Secretary Donald
D. Fuson (Louisiana State '70)
visited the Colony frequently with
ideas for improvement.
notice. With a strong beginning,
the ISU Phi Gams won first place
in the fraternity division of Cam
pus Songfest. The Colony also
participated in Campus Revue,
Spring Week and the ISU Home
coming Parade.
Besides participating in campus
activities as an organization, the
Phi Gams
were leaders
in such
areas as student government and
steering committees of several
major events. The Colony also dis
tinguished itself by having the
highest scholarship average, above
all other fraternities and all men's
averages on the campus.
