—
Dear Graduate Brothers,
SERVICE PROJECTS
As spring approaches, we are anxiously awaiting
our traditional Norris Pig Dinner. This year we have
scheduled our festivities for Saturday, April 17. At
5:00 p.m. we will begin serving cocktails in the living
room. The dinner is at 6:00, with time for visitation and
more drinks afterwards.
We are looking forward to seeing you there.
Fraternally yours.

Theta Chapter has continued to remain active in the
area of community service this year. The men of Theta
Chapter consider our service projects to be a very im
portant part of our contribution to the university com
munity as well as that of the Tuscaloosa area.
Early in the fall semester, the Chapter was fortunate
enough again to open our doors to the annual SGARed Cross Blood Drive. In another fall project spon
sored by the American Cancer Society, Theta Chapter
joined with the Kappa's, Chi-O's, and AKE's in having a
Sunday afternoon Band Party here at the Phi Gam

CAMPUS INVOLVEMENT
Campus Involvement has become as much a part of
tradition at Theta Chapter as Fiji Island. Phi Gams are
involved in student government, school organiza
tions, and numerous professional and civic groups.
GORDON MARTIN ('82) has just recently completed a
one year term as President of the Student Govern
ment Association—the first Phi Gam to occupy that
loosa Chapter of the American Cancer Society.
The highlight of our service calendar each year is
tfie Christmas Party for underprivileged which we
host with the Kappa's this year. Twenty-five indigent
children from Tuscaloosa County area were tre^ed to
gifts and candy from Santa Claus(Mark "Bear Collier
'85) and his two elves. Followed by cake and ice
cream as in the past this project was as fun for us as it
was forthe children.

Theta Chapter maintained its tradition of pledging
another outstanding pledge class of 1981. This can be
attributed to the support of the chapter, and hard work
from rush chairman Skip Wilson ('83) and Scott

many honors throughout his
life including Phi Beta Kappa and the National
President of Phi Delta Phi Legal Fraternity.
Mr. Rose was the lone arem in raising money
for the reconstruction of the chapter room of
Theta Chapter after the devastating fire in 1963.
Because of his deligient service and leadership
the Chapter room of the Theta Chapter is
dedicated to him. The Theta Chapter's dining
room is dedicated to his mother who served as
hostess before the incorporation of house
mothers. Mr. Rose also wrote the history of the
first century of the life of Theta Chapter.

As always in the Fall the members and pledges pull
shape after the long summer. The compliments by all
visiting alumni and guest were well received by the
men of Theta Chapter on how well the house looked.
The beginning of '82 found many improvements in the
fiouse. The dining room received brand new chande
liers and a new ceiling fan was put in the parlor room
for these hot spring days. A new carpet is on the way
along with a new house stereo.
Future plans include the installation of a washer
and dryer for members living in and out of the house
and new silverware has been ordered for the dining
room.

this year; participating in several closed weekends,as
well as a most productive work week. The annual
pledge class project will include a remodeling of the
house mothers apartment.
As usual, an intense study of the Purple Pilgrim was
required by the pledge class; a task which they under
took with true desire and devotion. Also, thanks to the
resourcefulness of our graduate brother, Jim
Andrews, we were able to present an additional study
on Theta Chapter History.
Pledge class officers for the year were: Chas Pell,
of Huntsville; Stratt Byars, of Russellville; Merrell
Nolen, of Fayette; and Mark "Bear" Collier, of Mont
gomery. These young men did an excellent job of pul
ling their pledge class together for the projects we
required of them.

Sports at Theta Chapter took new direction this
year. Emphasis was on preparation for each event on
the sports calendar instead of just one or two events
as in the past. Theta Chapter has not had much suc
cess with sports the past few years, but can be proud
of ourselves with 110% effort this year. Sports rang
ing from football to table tennis had good participa
tion throughout the chapter. At this time we hold a
slim lead on campus for the All-Sports trophy for
fraternities. Here are our accomplishments during the
Fall semester:
Football—2nd place(Finalist)
Volleyball—3rd place
Soccer—2nd place (Finalist)
Golf—2nd place (Finalist)
Tennis singles—3rd place
Long Distance Run —1st and 4th
For the spring, our goal is to make the playoffs in
every event to insure our winning of the All-Sports
trophy. Though just a symbol, this trophy represents
the excellence that Theta Chapter can achieve in com
petition.
Fraternally yours,
Hugh Morrow ('83)
