President's Letter
Dear Brothers,
Once again school Is In full swing. The swift pace of life
here at the Phi Gam house makes It necessary to take a lit
tle time to reflect on the activities over the past nine
months.
The '82-'83 school year ended on a high note, with the
chapter's successes revealing the energies and aspira
tions of the brothers. The enthusiasm of ten newly In
itiated brothers was an Integral part of our chapter efforts
leading to a very successful Norrls Pig Dinner In April.
Under the strong leadership of the Glass of '83 we showed
one of the most Imresslve Greek Week performances seen
In many years. The unity of XI Deuteron was recognized
campus-wide, as we were voted recipients of the 1983
Spirit Award. Fiji Island was truly a weekend of
brotherhood and good times. It was an excellent culmina
tion that left the seniors with fond memories, and an
overall deep feeling of pride In the brothers.
Stacks of files and crates signaled the arrival of a new
school year, filling the air with energy as the brothers were
reunited. Stories of the summer were traded, revealing the
events of Fiji Academy and numerous experiences at the
chapter house. Many tasks Immediately presented
themselves and the brothers have once again shown their
determination. Much clean-up, painting and other repairs
have taken place under the direction of House Manager
Gary Constant ('85). The combined efforts of the Rush and
Social committees, led by Dave Kopf ('85) and Tom Glennon ('86) respectively, should result In many successful
events. Among these Is our Fall Rush Dinner on October 5,
at which we are expecting a good turn out of our prospec
tive Freshman. The fruits of our labors will be recognized
on October 12, the bid-due date. Other planned events In
clude our 3rd Biannual Fiji Wild Weekend In the Woods
over the second weekend In October. This will find us In
the foothills of the Appalachians. On October 11 we will
once again take to the streets of Cleveland dressed In San
ta outfits to benefit the American Heart Association's an
nual Christmas card sale.
The XI Deuteron chapter would like to offer a hearty con
gratulations to the Greater Cleveland 'Eta' Graduate
Chapter In being co-reclplent of the 1983 Brightman
Award. On this note, we wish to express our desire for In
creased graduate rapport. We regret that the production of
this publication was long In coming. We have made It a
goal to establish future consistency In this area. You can
assist us by completing our questlonaire and helping us
develops an ongoing network of graduate news. Also, I
would like to extend my personal Invitation for you to at
tend our annual Fall Smoker to be held on Friday,
November 18.
From the P.L.
The 1983 Fall Semester at Case Western Reserve pro
mises to be a very exciting time for the XI Deuteron
chapter. The brothers returned from summer vacation fill
ed with enthusiasm and energy. Their rededlcatlon to ex
cellence should produce a memorable semester.
We recently received a visit from Field secretary Mike
Lucas. He provided several suggestions to facilitate
chapter Improvement. Mike enjoyed his stay Immensly,
thus showing that XI Deuteron's unrlvelled hospitality still
continues.
The chapter Is enjoying a very successful Intramural
season. We have fielded outstanding teams In football,
bowling, and golf. Although participation In the Intramural
program Is strongly encouraged, scholarship Is still the
chapter's main concern. This attitude was recently
reflected when the chapter passed a motion requiring a 2.5
(on a 4.0 scale) grade average from the previous semester
to earn eligibility to participate In Intramurals.
Each year. Fall Semester provides another opportunity
to rush prospective pledges. This fall, the chapter has con
ducted and extensive rush program. The events have In
cluded cookouts, parties, a camping trip, "dorm storming",
and the annual Rush Dinner. The chapter's hard work and
enthusiasm should produce successful results.
I am quite excited about the chapter. The spirit Is high
and the brothers have dedicated themselves to chapter
Improvement. I look forward to
reporting additional
favorable accomplishments In the next publication.

\r\nGraduate Spotlight
In this edition of Xi Deuteron's Pot Pourri, we spotlight
our beloved brother Albert G. Williams, class of '27.
At his home in Shaker Heights, brothers fVIike Jones
('86), Dave Kopf ('85), and myself enjoyed a pleasant late
afternoon chat with Al. For nearly forty-five minutes we sat
and talked with him as he reminisced about his days as an
undergraduate brother at Xi Deuteron.
Brother Williams was born in Cleveland on December 29,
1903. Shortly after, his family moved to Shaker Heights
where he has remained. In 1923, he began his studies at
Western Reserve University in business administration,
and joined the ranks as a Fiji on February 25, 1924. Al's
late brother "DIbby" was also a Xi Deuteron Fiji from the
class of 1914. Al has a son Jim who is a graduate brother
from Miami University, class of '66, and a daughter Gwynn.
His wife is a sister in Delta Phi Upsilon sorority.
Despite retiring from his job of fifty-four years as a part
ner in Williams Insurance Agency just two days following
our interview, Al remains quite active both fraternally and
in his favorite pastime - gardening. His devotion to our
chapter and others has won him great respect. His reward
of sixty consecutive Norrls Pig Dinners exemplifies his
sincere devotion. As a result of his loyal service to the
fraternity, Al received the Distinguished Fiji Award on May
1, 1965. Later, he was given a citation for distinguished
and exceptional service in May of 1977. Included in his col
lection of awards are both the Gold and Silver Owls.
As a brother in the house, Al was very active. He held the
offices of Recording Secretary, Historian, and Correspon
ding Secretary. On campus, Al was a chairman on the
Inter-Fraternity Council and manager and singer in the
Glee Club. After graduation, he became a Section Chief.
He held this office from 1938 until 1940. In 1970 he served
as general chairman of the 122nd Ekklesia, held in
Cleveland.
Al
has
attended
thirteen
Ekklesia and
two
Academies. He hopes to attend more in the future. For five
years he served on the executive committee of the Phi
Gamma Delta Educational Foundation. Although, as he
says, he was too young to fight in World War I, and too old
for World War II, Al was a member of the 107th Cavalry Na
tional Guard.
We asked Al if there was anyone from whom he would
like to hear. After not much thought he spoke of Brother
Albert H. "Bus" Crawford from the class of '25.
Just before leaving, I walked around the living room ad
miring Al's various awards. I admire the man not only for
what all the plaques, citations, and awards say of him, but
of what I had learned of Brother Williams through meeting
him these few times. Al is a brother with a truly purple
heart. He is definite proof that "Phi Gamma Delta is not for
college days alone."
Respectfully,

High Spirits Propel Fiji's Though Greek Week
Spring semester of 1983 found Xi Deuteron completing
one of its most successful Greek Weeks. The spirit and en
thusiasm of the brothers was high as usual going into the
first day. This tone was soon magnified by first place
finishes in both the raft race and obstacle course.
Throughout the week we consistently finished in the top
six places of many events, including a heartbreaking loss
to the Phi Delts during the semi-finals of the rope pull. The
end of the week was culminated by a record-breaking first
place in the beer relay. The biggest suprise came in the
final event of the week - the bed race. In previous years our
bed had consistently finished last, narrowly escaping be
ing beaten by the sororities. This year, however, through
the utilization of the wheels from our lawn mower and
superb piloting by Daring Don Uttrlch ('85), our "rickety,
will-it-make-it-to-the-finish-line" bed managed to place
sixth. The Fiji's turned out in full force to every event,
displaying exceptional brotherhood and sportsmanship.
This attitude was rewarded at the awards ceremony when
we were voted winners of the 1983 Spirit Award. These ef
forts led to an overall 4th place finish. The '83-'84 year pro
mises to be just as triumphant as Xi Deuteron is showing
strong starts in the intramural program.

Summer Fiji's Enjoy Graduate Hospitality
A Sunday afternoon in late July was the setting for a picnic
hosted by Paul Qua (DePauw '82). The event gathered
some twenty Fijis in the Cleveland area, representing six
chapters. The ingredients of a typical picnic were
present—juicy burgers, cold brew, and softbail, but the
brotherhood and excellent hospitality of Paul and his
grandmother made the event exceedingly special. The en
thusiasm and high spirits held by the brothers throughout
the afternoon exemplified the quality of the gathering.
Such an outcome seemed to be the prediction as ail ten of
Xi Deuteron's summer Clevelanders were present. The
undergraduate chapters at Ohio Wesieyan, Pitt, and Miami
were also represented.
A special thank-you must go the the graduate brothers
who attended. Their abscence would have dampened the
afternoon's success. Orrin Eames (Michigan '31), presi
dent of the Cleveland Graduate Chapter was present along
with. Bill Reid (Lehigh '51) and Don McClain (DePauw '82).
Our thanks to Paul Qua, who stresses the importance of
undergraduates interacting with their Graduate Chapters.
He extends an invitation to ail undergraduates, both living
in or just visiting the Cleveland area, to join him and the
Graduate Chapter for CAC luncheons held every Tuesday
To the Graduates
Dear Graduate Brothers,
The undergraduate brothers of the Xi Deuteron chapter
of Phi Gamma Delta would like to invite you to our Fall
Smoker on November 18 and alert you of our annual Frank
Norris Pig Dinner in the Spring. Please join us and take
part in renewing bonds of friendship and supporting the
fraternity.
As members of Phi Gamma Delta, graduate as well as
undergraduate brothers share the timeless bonds of
friendship that promote knowledge so that we ail may live
in glory. The continuing relationship that exists between
graduates and undergraduates is necessary for the Frater
nity's ideals to flourish and be perpetuated. An open invita
tion stands for everyone to stop by and visit the chapter
house. You will see that we have maintained the "il
lustrious hospitality" that is our house motto.
Fraternally,
at the University Club of Cleveland.

Pot Pourri
From the Editor
Brothers,
The absence of consistency In turning out a publication
has been detrimental to our graduate relations. We hope
by correctly Implementing the program this year, a tradi
tion of fine publications will carry on Into the future. The
approach we have tried to follow Is one of a liaison; recon
necting the separated links In our chain. In turn, this pro
cess can not be completed by us alone. Your cooperation
In returning the questlonaire and attending graduate
events Is Imperative. Without this type of Interaction our
efforts are In vain; for as In everything, teamwork Is the key
to success.
We take great pride In relntroducing you to the Pot
Pourri and hope you find It enjoyable.
