amazing that such a small group c-m c nt nually

can shov/ such unity of purouse when they h-.ve trouble mustering sunport ai;ions their numerous i,iCiMbors for activities that see 100% Fiji participation.
The secret is, of couri;c, no secret—it's .dROTHFRHOOD! We have it, v/e cher
ish it, and
work daily to increase and protect it.
Every brother of iipsilon 3igi.;a could irobably give a different reason
for our sucoss—our Brotherhood—but I have come up with three key reasons
why I believe that wo have remained strong, though si..all, - while other fra
ternities around us
have lost as much a.s
half of tlioir
membership
in the
last few years.
First, wo h;.sVc seen fr-.to^-nities chago fr'.)ni quality houses into "freak"
houses in a frightoningly shoi-t period of time.
Wo h ive deter ined that
this -v/ill not happen to us—henco our strong policy toward dru :• use.
I
quote from our Upsilon Si pma j ledge Manual:
"Th^j use, possesslo i, or distr-
ibutulon of any type of illegal drug or narcotic will not be tolerated in Josilcjn S.igma. This stand is not a moral one or a medic.il one.
It i-s sidoly
a legal one and a practic 1 one.
A look at frabernity
chapters w'rlch "nave
closed in tho painb few years ;.;ln')ws th.ib the root c: use in - nearly every in
stance was the illegal use of narcotics by members.
We wo'ild not be hyi.ocritical enough to suggest that tiiis policy covers brothers only while they
arc in tin. house since our brotherhood does not observe ..-.uch a boundary. \Ve
care too much about the futures of our chapter and our orobliers to see them
put in jeopardy."
Secondly, wo have adhered strictly to our Ritual, our !.0Gt precious inherit.nnce,
at a time when other houses have chosen to abandon bhoirs.
Ritual is the core of Phi Gamma Delta.
form the lives of those willing to .accept it.
that can not be achieved b,; .u.iy other device.
Thirdly, our very size
The
it.s i.-,ossa,p/, in pr.uctice, co. . trans
gives us strength.
It gives us a co^i ..on
bond
If it is true that you got
out of an organization in proportion to v/hat you put in our br(/bhers are in
deed wealthy.
With only a rare exception evury iaoidbor holds neb one or two
but as many as throe major chairmaiiships and all are doing an amazing job
without tliou.ght of ap)pl.auGe or sioaning under tho burden. hur .size allov.'s us
to know e.wch otho.c person lly, to becojue orother;3 Ln a very re,-?.] sense. Al
though we pl.nn to grow somewha.t in the future (a go.al of ^0-1^0 Actives h.vi.s
been suggested) wo v/ill net allov; our clos-ness and unity to be sacr.i fined
for simple numerical gain.
It has been another good year .and I believe that I have iientioned three
of the iuajor reasons, though they are by no means the only re;\,3onG, and I
see no reason why v;e c.-.ui not contLnue to ansAze next year,
