TAU DEUTERON CHAPTER
UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS
UPDATE: FALL RUSH 1974
Through the combined efforts of our rush eaptains,
Stephen Pearce, Jackson Hooper, and Doug Barnes,
and with the support of many of the graduates, and
100% effort from the undergraduate chapter, Tau
Deuteron had a very successful year by pledging 28
men. We are now enjoying listening to the talk
around the fraternities and sororities that Fijis have
the best pledge class on campus. Generous rush con
tributions from the graduate chapter made it pos
sible for us to have such a successful rush program.
We wish to thank all of you who contributed and
we know that if such support continues we can look

to accompany the Pig Dinner festivities. We will
play in foursomes of two graduates and two under

bring their clubs and participate in this segment of
the activities.
Following the golf tournament we will head for
Lake Austin for a river boat ride that will take us

THE PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
The undergraduate chapter here at Buen Retiro is
looking forward to a very prosperous and fulfilling
experience in 1975. Our optimism stems from the
fact that we now find ourselves at a time when our
fraternity is on the verge of obtaining a higher
plateau of achievement. As you may know our Fiji
chapter won the overall university intramural cham
pionship last year, and at this point this year, we
are again on top in the point standings. This in itself
is a strong indication of our leadership on campus.
I am also happy to report that for the first time in
several years the undergraduate chapter consists of
over 110 men strong. All of this immediate success

has instilled a new pride and optimism in our chap
ter that will hopefully snowball. All of us in the
undergraduate chapter are working toward this goal.
All of our success here on campus could only be
made possible with the very generous support of
our graduate chapter. I realize that this has been
the case in years past, but here again I view this
year as a sort of unique experience. Tau Deuteron
has, and is still going through, financial difficulties.

great pride of Tau Deuteron. This special sense of
pride is our most valuable asset. It is truly a "lift" to
the entire undergraduate chapter to see the support
given to Buen Retiro from her concerned graduates.
The combined support of the undergraduates and
graduate chapter to our fraternity has given us the
sense of optimism that I mentioned earlier. The pres

to tie the graduate chapter with the undergraduate
chapter in a more positive way. We all know that
this area has been seriously neglected in the past,
and that it could be our strongest asset in the future.
I welcome any and all suggestions whether person
ally or by phone. Please feel free to stop by the house
anytime, and of course to attend our approaching

FIJIS SHOW
INTRAMURAL STRENGTH
The 1974 fall intramural season for the Fijis
proved to be verv successful but the task of defend
ing our intramural title is becoming extremely diffi
cult. We hold a 150 point advantage over second
place Acacia with several other fraternities within
striking distance.
This year looked like a rebuilding vear beginning
with the "A" football team having lost six of fourteen
starters, four of which were all-intramural picks.
Long practice sessions and a fantastic defense proved
to be the winning ingredients as the "A" team took
m\
the University Championship for a second consecu
tive year. Jack Nash, quarterback Ric Halden, block
ing back Larry Abernathv and defensive back Mark
Monroe were selected as all-intramural. The most
outstanding play consistently came in the defensive
secondary where the experience of three seniors
Bill Rudd, Frosty Moore, and Mark Monroe kept the
Fijis in every game.
Special recognition must also go to a pair of sure
hands, those belonging to Bob Martin, whose spec
tacular catches many times brought spectators to
their feet.
Other members of the "A" championship team
were offense: Rick Dollins, Ras Redwine, and Neal
Shudde, defense: rushers Steve Lubke and Jimmy
Gordon and linebackers Steve Pearce and Kenny
Creighton.
The "B"football team also captured the University
Championship; its third in as many years. It took the
help of eight new starters, a freshman quarterback
and a superb defense led by Jack Womack, Vance
STEPHEN PEARCE

IN THE FIJI SPOTLIGHT'
We, at Tan Deuteron, are proud of our many
scholastic achievements. However, standing above
all others is brother Stephen Pearce who was elected
this fall to Phi Beta Kappa. This honorary scholastic
society is the most prestigious and esteemed goal of
scholastic endeavor in higher education, and accep
tance therein is limited to those very few who meet
its exacting standards.
Not onlv does brother Pearce excell scholastically,
but he has also been very active in all phases of the
fraternity. He served as a state rush captain this past
year, he was a member of our intramural football
"A"-team which has won the university champion
Duncan, and Jon Levy.
The Fiji swim team also captured a championship,

points with John Saunders qualifying in the top 16 in
golf and Ben McCaleb reaching the quarter-finals
of tennis.
Volleyball was less successful than last year al
though the "B" team was able to battle to the fra
ternity finals before losing in three games to defend
ing champ Acacia.
I believe the fall semester showed the pride and
dedication that we have for our intramural program
as we continually overcame tremendous odds to win.
I feel like the spring semester will produce another
Intramural Championship for us.

COMMUNITY
INVOLVEMENT
This past fall the undergraduate chapter contrib
uted greatly to many of the underprivileged citizens
of the Austin community.
On October 5th we entertained thirty mentally
retarded children at the Lake Club. We were able
to match each child with a Fiji brother to give them
the individual attention that they deserve. We all
participated in a football game where every child
called himself a longhorn and learned the wishbone
offense and the four-point stance.
Halloween proved an opportunity to entertain the
deaf children of Austin. Brother Neal Shudde's ideas
and effort transformed Buen Retire into a haunted

house and the pledges dressed up as ghosts and
goblins.
Finally, at the annual Christmas party we joined
with our sister sorority, Kappa Alpha Theta to enter
tain the underprivileged childi'en of East Austin.
Rush Recommendation
