\r\nPRESIDENT'S LETTER
Better alumni relations wanted
This year, forty-two brothers returned to the Fiji
house with a renewed and exciting urge for im
provement. We have been in school for only a short
time but already improvements and plans for im
provements are being made. Both the second and
third floor bathrooms have been painted and new
shrubbery has been added to the front of the house.
By the time you read this, we expect the second and
third floor halls to he newly carpeted and paneled.
We are making all these improvements not only to
better our living conditions, but also to improve the
appearance of the house to which you enjoy
returning. We are strong in virtually every respect ex
cept one, and this one is in alumni relations, corres
pondence, and aid; not necessarily aid in the
monetary sense, hut in mshing and personal interest.
We cannot write each of you telling you whatis going
on here at Epsilon, but we will answer every letter you
send to us and will be glad to hear from you. We are
using the services of a professional printer to publish
this year's three Epsilon Owls. We hope this will im
prove the appearance of the newsletter as well as the
accuracy of distribution. You will also receive an
Alumni Directory soon for your benefit. Cm his
torian, Walter Brindell, is compiling a scraphookof
all filed Owls ranging as far hack as 1945.
I hope you realize the efforts we are making to im
prove our alumni relations. You will receive the im
proved "Epsilon Owl"three times a year and we hope
that you will read it with interest and devotion as a
brother of Phi Gamma Delta. We do not want only a
one-sided communciation,however,so please visit us
after football games, at Homecoming,or just drop in
any time. We want you to visit us,to take an interest,
and to aid us in our various activities.
We are making a special effort to improve our
alumni relations. Won't you help and do the same for
us.
Fraternally,
Perge!

The Owl's purpose is to communicate alumni news.
We have been publishing predominantly Chapter
news mainly because alumni news has been lacking.
We have about 850 copies of each issue printed, with
wood paneling in the second and third floor
hallways. These walls, still covered with the original
plaster, hold memories from many, many years, but
they also hold all those years' dirt and scars. The
committee headed by Bobby Thurston of Greensboro

\r\nIFC adopts new rush system
Formal rush around the Phi Gam house has a new
look for 1973 that has not been a policy at the
University in fifteen years. This year, freshmen are
allowed to pledge the first day of classes, and the
"open rush" continues throughout the year. This new
rush system is designed to help alleviate some of the
financial burdens the old system placed on the
houses. In the new system, rushing is done most
heavily in the summer thus spending far less than
the allotment necessary for a two semester rush
house he had no intention of pledging. Also, first
semester is too soon for pledging if the individual has
just come to U.N.C.and n ot had a chance to blend in.
2) It is extremely difficult to get all the brothers
assembled for a siunmer rush party with jobs and
vacations, thus not giving the rushee a chance to
meet all the brothers.
3) The pressure is extreme on the rush chairmen
when they know they could lose a prospective pledge
at any moment during the semester.
4) The financial system is difficult because the

After talking with many brothers and members of
other fraternities as well, I have found many pros
and cons of the new system, and will give a brief
outline of some.
Pros:
1) The system will most certainly cost far less.
2) The pressures and fears of losing rushees to
brotherhood has to lend to the rush committee; that
is, the house is not in session and it is difficult to
prepare a budget.
We have worked very hard and have pledged up
