1977 January Newsletter Delta Deuteron (Hampden-Sydney College)
1/14/77.
DELTA DEUTEROE LEWS
Dear Brothers,
^
For some of you with better memories, you mi^ht recoil a promise
I made to you at the beginning;:: of this administration. That being
that I would have a newsletter for you once a month, .-ell, as witih
other political types - promises often go by the wayside when co36fronted with exigencies such as staggering costs. The financial situ
ation is no better but in order to keep all of you more informed we
are now putting out one nevrsletter a month.
As many of you can tell from the other articles herein, oar fi
nancial situation is not good. V/e are asking you in earnest for some
help. Kany of you are in positions v/hereby a little money from each
of you will help us a great deal. I realize it does not particularily
to hear from us when we are not in the best of shape; however, a con
centrated effort on all our parts will see us through these rough
times. I am not overemphasizing the problems by any means - but I
do not want to deemphasize the situation either, l.e generally need
your support. V/e don't ask for it very often but certain necessary and
imperative needs confront us now. We are endeavoring to fix up this
house to large extent, and, at the same time, have enough money tc have
some good weekends for all of you all during this second semester.
Rest assured that every effort to economize and to raise funds has been
and is at present being explored.
This house, the strength of the brotherhood, and the general
welfare of t is fraternity are not totally divorced from all of you.
Granted, we carry the burden of responsibility and weight. Hov/ever as
graduates ( good graduates ) . you should realize that yours is a key
role in the future of this chapter. V/e want to shore-up our financial
weaknesses as soon as possible, and work to provide for a stronger
future for Delta Deuteron.
Many of you may be concerned at reading this letter. I hope all
of you are moved enough to do something about your concern". This entire
letter is designed to make you aware, make you concerned but above
all to get you involved. In the future, I promise to do my part to
insure better graduate relations; and at the smae time, to continue
to work for a financially stronger Chapter. As always v/e remain rich
in spirit and other untenable resources. V.hat we are asking; of you is
a preciously small amount of effort from each of you which will collectively - work to strengthen us in the days ahead.
As always, I remain very Fraternally yours,
PERGEi
Mark Goodin, President
FINANCIAL REPORT:
From a monetary standpoint, our chapter seems to be fighting
an uphill battle. The Vepco bill and that portion of the phone bill
not recovered now amounts to about S250 per month. The college has recent
ly enacted legislation requiring fraternity houses to have securelocks on all doors, several fire extinguishers, etc. Our house itself
needs new carpets as well as some painting. Finally, we were recently
billed 05^-5 for the Fiji Academy this coming summer.
With a small brotherhood such as ours, it is becoming increas
ingly difficult to make ends meet. With a present checking account
balance of less than iilOO, we have trouble merely paying our bills
much less setting aside money for a desperately neode second semester
rush to strengthen our chapter, the cabinet is requesting small con-
\r\n- 2 -
tributions from
interested £'Taduate brotlwlrs. './e intend several
money making projects this semester, including a doughnut sale in
Richmond. We are doing all we can, but we need your help if we are
to continue to be the most outstanding fraternity on campus.
Oden Semones, Treasurer
HOUSE REPORT :
At the beginning of the new year, vre had many great ideas on how
we could improve the house. At present time the house is not in the
best of shape. Floors could use now carpeting, and many of the walls
could use a fresh coat of paint. At the present time we are trying
to get the House Corporation to give us some funds to improve the
house. With these funds we can begin to remodel. But with these funds
v/e can only begin the long task ahead of us. With your sxipport, we
can implement our plans now] Please help us make the Fiji house, the
pride of the campus and one which you remember as yours.
Jack Farraro, House Manager
SOCIAL REPORT:
Remember the activities last semester? Homecoming v^eekend and
Parents & Friends \7eekend \7ere great successes. Several people came
up to me and said they were the best things that they could remember.
All of the brothers and all of the graduate brothers thoroughly enjoyed
themselves.
This semester liidv/inters is tentatively set for Feb. 25. The
next newsletter will contain more information about our activities
that v^eekend. We have come up with some ideas for parties this semester
which I feel j^ou will want to participate in. One of these is a
Wet - T - Shirt contest to be held when things v/arm "up a bit. Another
idea is to have another popular skin-flick, porno night for the brothers
Hov/ these ideas are good but for these things to go through we need
some help. We try to make it as enjoyable as possible when you come
down. If you can lend us support vjith either ideas, social contacts,
or some help towards the next keg, this semester at Fiji will prove
to be even more fun and v;ild than the last.
Mark Peterson, Social Chairman
RUSH REPORT:
As most of you grads know, this chapter has never had a secondsemester rush, but this year we are going to institute one. Along v;ith
with the freshmen that received bids and did not pledge, - v^e are piirsuing
more freshmen also. We're using our pledges for more leads to freshmen.
This keeps the pledges more involved in the fraternity and brings them
closer than ever.
V/e're pushing for more activities dtiring second semester. As you
know this is the dead time at H.S. We have in the planning stage some
invitation-only "Happy Hours" at the house, a porn night, and a drunka-thon on a larger scale than ever before.
As before in second semester, our money is very tight. We are
exploring several fvmdraising projects in conjunction with rush and
for our other needs. We need your support for our chapter and our
second-semester rush. I'd be appreciative of any ideas for our rush
and come and see us anytime to support us. You graduate brothers can
also help by sending any names of men here that would be good Fiji
material. You grads can help us more than you realize. We're holding
our own but with your continued support this chapter can really grow
into something even better for yr^, to come back to.
John Carneal, Rush Chairman

BRIEF NOTES:
w
.
..
This newsletter, as ones in the past contains no information
as to vrhat the graduate Brothers are doing these days. V/e would
like to include a section , starting with next month's edition,
which v/ould serve as a communicating vehicle in vdiich we covild pass
on any news about yourselves (how' life ?, the job ?, etc. ). In
order to do this we need to hear from you, so drop us a line on
what's happening with you and we can pass the info on to the entire
brotherhood.
On a similar note, we are currently updating our address filo,
comparing it to what the college has as your current address. So,
if this newsletter ends up being fov;arded to you let us know your
current address.
The cabinet vrould like to have a Board of Chapter Advisers meeting
the Saturdaj'' morning of Midwinters, including breakfast cooked by
some of our lovely house ladies. We vifill write those graduate brothers
we vjould like to participate a little later when we have some final
ized information.
Here's an important addition to our social calender: on the
first weekend in March (or even possibly sometime during Midv;inters
depending on your response) we v;ill be hosting a vfine & cheese
coffee-house. Entertainment will be provided by Brother Bayliss'
sister, Maura and two of her friends Dianne & Jackie v;ho have been
performing professionally in the Penn. and Nev; York area. They also
have done some recording so they're GOOD! They are doing this free
so we hope to show them just what a great house Delta Deuteron is.
The same night we are also v/orking on getting another folk singer
who sings in Richmond clubs to rovihd out what should be a KEMCR/iBLE
evening. Let us knov: what could be the best date for you. DON'T
KISS THIS ONE!
-'.S. Hell week is the weekend before Midwinters. Come join in the fun.
