Brother Impressed
by Visit to
National Headquarters
I could not make a trip to our Fraternity's General
Headquarters without sharing my impressions with the
rest of our Brothers. The General Fraternity moved
almost two years ago from Washington, D.G. to a
beautiful new building in Lexington, Kentucky. The
new headquarters is located in a spacious office com
plex, which provides ample room for the numerous
services which headquarters provides.
I was especially impressed by the many historical
artifacts found throughout the building. Items such as
diamond badges, whales' teeth from the Fiji Islands,
and letters written by Epsilon Fiji Zeb Vance were
especially interesting. I also noticed the badge of Fiji
astronaut Gene Cernan, the third man to ever walk on
the moon, as well as the only portrait ever painted of
Fiji Brother, President Calvin CooUdge, which hangs in
the Archons' meeting room.
Even more impressive than the historical items
mentioned was the excellent staff which runs our
Fraternity. Headed by Executive Secretary Bill
Zerman, his staff efficiently runs the complex business
and handles the problems of our great Fraternity.
I feel sure a visit by every brother to our head
quarters wiU be as rewarding as mine was. To see

That hnk is Paul Minor. This man has seen the con

most Brothers spend four years at Epsilon, this man

One rniique aspect of this pledge class has been their

\r\nFiji Island Highlights
Spring Semester
In the spring of every year, Fiji Island is THE
weekend for the brotherhood of Epsilon. This year
proved to be no exception and, despite chilly March
weather, pledges, brothers, and several alumni shared
a fun-filled weekend. These pictures indicate some of
the excitement of Friday night's tropical island party
and the formal champagne party on Saturday.
Needless to say, decorating the house during the week
before proved to be almost as exciting.
Rush Report
Bill Smith and I have just recently been elected Rush
Chairmen for the coming year and it won't be long
before rush wiU once again be upon us. It is our hope
that Epsilon can uphold her fine tradition of selecting
excellent pledges but this cannot be done without the
help of our distinguished alumni. In the past you have

better than in recent years. Our overall standing in the
blue division for fraternities was sixth out of twentynine. In the white division we finished ninth out of
thirty-one fraternities. Second place finishes in wrest

performances in basketball, tennis, and Softball also
aided.
Much of the credit for this success must go to Russ

\r\nGoodbye Seniors
Epsilon. The large shoes which they have vacated wiU,

have taken in this year.
In just the four short years that this year's seniors
In conclusion, the brothers who will return next fall
have been at Carolina, this school has experienced an
to Epsilon thank the departing seniors for four of the
greatest years of our lives. In the years to come, a
certain song on the radio, a peek at the Fiji scrapbook,
"era of good feeling." The outburst of student protest
of the late 60's was replaced by an air of tranquihty as
these young men first arrived as freshmen. New, wellequipped dormitories and classroom buildings have
been added to the campus and even that strange
phenomenon,"school spirit," which we might expect to
fade away after high school, has been evident among
the students. And, finally, the fraternities of Carohna
have been restored to their former lofty status which
had been sorely challenged during the tempestuous
years in the late 60's.
We must now say farewell to our seniors as they
venture forth into a world vastly different from th'e
secluded, almost Utopian hfe which Carolina has to
offer its students. Sadly enough, they will take with
them an irreplaceable part of Epsilon. To every
remaining brother, parties, intramurals, and aU tKe
other times we share together just won't be the same.
Two departing brothers, Charles Ivey and Donnie
Hardee, wiU be the first to faU by the wayside with
summer weddings.
Just what has four years at Epsilon meant for these
graduates? The best word to describe it is simply
"imdescribable." Any other choice of words is simply
too inadequate to recognize aU of the warm moments
spent in Vance HaU. For, in the short instance of time
that we are here, our friends are always by our side
ready to laugh with us when we're happy, lend us a
helping hand when we reach out for assistance, and
pick us up when we've fallen. It is this true
brotherhood which we can eternally cherish and
appreciate as the true essence of Phi Gamma Delta.
Despite the fact that these men now depart in
different directions, we feel certain that they wiU
always reserve a special place in their hearts for
or even a glimpse at the worn links of the chain in our
Chapter room will be enough to remind us of old
friends and memories. We hope that they will return
often and remember the immortal thought that Phi
Gamma Delta is not for college days alone.
