ZETA NOMINATED "PECK" PARSONS FOR 1979 COULTER CUP
In recognition of exceptionally out
standing service by a Graduate Brother
to an Undergraduate Chapter of the Fra
ternity of Phi Gamma Delta, the men of
Zeta Chapter nominated Darrel R.
(Peck) Parsons for the 1979 CoulterCup
award. This past summer. The Ekklesiai
saw fit to award this prestigious honor
to Parsons for his services to Zeta Chap
ter.
Brother Parsons began his service to
Zeta as a graduate in 1948 when he be
came a member of the House Corpora
tion Board of Directors. At this time,
there had been limited involvement by
graduates as far as the House Corpora
strong House Corporation Board had
been laid largely to the credit of Brother
Parsons. Through the help of Peck and
these other dedicated alumni,the under
graduates were given guidance and ad
vice in chapter affairs.
Under Peck's leadership, plans were
drawn for a three stage renovation of the
Chapter house with the first stage to be
started in the Spring of 1950. Work
continued into the Fall and was com
pleted in 1951. The second and third
stages of the renovation plan followed
thereafter, headed by Peck, and the en
tire project was completed in 1964.

In an effort to strengthen this aspect of
Zeta's operation, Peck found and per

which was to raise funds for the rewir
in their own occupations, to serve as
ing, replumbing, and remodeling of the
Board members. The foundation of a
nearly 60-year old chapter house.
Brother Parson's tenure as President
of the House Corporation ended in 1975.
However, he was honored by the grad
uate brothers with his election as Chair
man of the Board of Directors.
These accomplishments are un
doubtedly impressive. However, Peck's
major contribution to Zeta Chapter lies
in his undying, selfless, devotion and
concern forthe undergraduate members
throughout his 31 years as a House Cor
poration member. With the guidance of
such devoted graduates as Peck Par
sons, Zeta became a perennial power
house among fraternities at Indiana Uni
versity. Throughout the past 30 years,
Zeta has won many all-campus awards
on the International level. It is a testi
mony to Peck's foresight and loyalty that
the University has turned to Phi Gamma
Delta for leadership in University affairs
on many occasions.

Zeta Brings Home Fifth Straight I.M. Title
The 1978-79 school year brought to
Zeta Its fifth straight Intramural champ
ionship and sixth in the last seven years.
When the final point standings were re
leased, Phi Gamma Delta was over two-
hundred points ahead of its nearest
competitor, Sigma Alpha Epsilon. Zeta
won seven of the possible 30 awards pre
sented at the awards banquet held in
September. Fiji's won awards in Flag
Football, Volleyball, Basketball, Gross
Country, Basketball Freethrow and
Table Tennis Doubles.
This year, the winning tradition is
continuing. The Pledge football team Is
first in its league having suffered no
losses throughout the entire season.
They should be the odds on favorite to
capture the league title in the upcoming
playoffs. On October 18, 40 Fiji's ran the
distance In the cross country meet, with
Tom Jones, junior, finishing in thetopSO
of the over 700 contestants, gaining
top honors for Zeta.
The IM wrestling meet was also held

in October, and four Fiji's advanced to
the quarter finals, and one, Greg Relfel,
advanced to the finals in the Crimson
division.
Two brothers, Mike Lotz and Jay
Steele have played their way to thequar-

ter finals in racquetball and handball re
spectively. Table tennis seems to be one
of the Phi Gam strongholds in IMs this
winter, as all four of the competitors from
Beechwood are still in the competition
for individual and house honors In pinq
pong.
Two sports usually dominated by the
Fiji athletes, volleyball and swimming
are just getting underway, and once
again Zeta fields teams which have the
ability to win both activities.

GRADUATE RELATIONS
piJI ISLE 1979
The 1979 fall semester brings an en
thusiastic graduate relations committee
to work here at Zeta. Plans to continue
activities of the past and Implement
some new ideas are coming to form al
ready. At the moment our number one
effort Is the invitation and encourage
ment of ail graduates to come back to
Beechwood at least once this year. Our
committee and all the undergraduate
brothers want to thank and recognize ail
of those who have given us such a fine
tradition of excellence to carry on here.
Prime opportunities to do this would
be on Big Red home football weekends.
Already this season we have had excel
lent turnouts for the pregame luncheon
buffet. We have had a very positive re
sponse to our "dressing up" of the oc
casion. The menu consists of the tradi
tional chili, but we have added afinedis-
play and selection of cold cuts, breads
and salads. We also have an open invita
tion to anyone who might want to return
to the house after the game and enjoy
some of the brotherhood.
The second annual Octoberfest to
celebrate Homecoming was held on Sat
urday the 20th of October. Festivities in
cluded an authentic German band and a
delicious buffet of German food. Fifty
year "I" man Knoll Kutchback was our
special guest speaker after the home
coming game with Northwestern.
Also in the plans for the semester is
the class of '69 reunion. A tentative date
for this event is November 16-17, the
weekend of the Purdue football game. A
letter will be sent prior to the date con
taining pertinent information. If you get
anxious to hear more about it, feel free to
write or call us. In general, we want to
personally contact and recognize as
many of our respected brothers as pos
sible. We greatly appreciate letters,
notes, calls and any feedback that you
might have. Remember, Phi Gamma
Delta is not for college days alone.

Baker Cup Continues Its Community Service
by: David Emery
This semester's Baker Cup Commit
tee Is co-chaired by Don McMahon,'82,
and David Emery, '82. They are looking
forward to an exciting and challenging
time working with the Bloomington
community.
The spring of '79 saw the committee
working with the Girl's Club of Bloom

interested in watching a community ser

efforts will be of use in their country.
This fall's Baker Cup campaign is al
ready in full gear. The Fiji Tennis Tour

local businesses.
Zeta, in conjunction with the Fiji's
from Ohio State, ran the football from
mittee rounded up some brothers in the
Memorial Stadium to the Ohio State
stadium for the I.U.-O.S.U. football

the Girl's Club gymnasium into a game

In early February Zeta entered "The

before the game.

A Halloween party is planned for a
group of special education students
from a nearby elementary school. The
sorority of Sigma Delta Tau has ex
pressed an interest in helping with the
party. We are looking forward to work

piness to these children.
In November Zeta plans to have
about six big brothers in the house who
will be undertaking the job of filling in as
a father-brother image to lonely boys.
This is not an easy task yet we hope each
one finds it a rewarding experience.
Tentatively, two events have been
planned for the month of December.

In late February and early March, a
majority of the House went to the Blood

volunteer basis. In April, once again the
Girl's Club was invited over for an Easter
party. Activities included an Easter Egg
hunt, an egg toss, and refreshments.
In September sad news came from
Purdue when we heard that a fellow Fiji
had been in a serious accident. Zeta has
pitched in to have a plaque made for him
with the "Persistence" slogan inscribed
on it. We sincerely hope that this will
boost his spirits and spur him on to
speedy recovery.

to improve and expand our program. We

This year's annual Fiji Academy was
held in August here at Zeta. The Acad

chapter holding high positions in five
different categories.
Zeta, who has exceeded the men's
grade point average longer than any
other chapter (20 years), was awarded
with both the Jordan Bowl and Owen
Cup for its scholastic excellence.
Along with receiving third in Cheney
Cup for overall chapter efficiency, Zeta
was voted fifth in Brightman Cup for
their graduate relations program.
