Intramural Season
The 1977-78 Intramural season should
prove to be a very productive one for Pi
Chapter. After strong performances in
football and basketball, the intramural
FIJI MACHINE has only to do well in the
spring sports to have a good shot at the
intramural championship.
The Fiji Football team was young,
starting all juniors and sophomores, and
played with a limited roster because of so
many brothers playing varsity football.
But neither of these facts deterred our
team. They finished in second place with
a 6-1 record losing in the playoffs to the
Phi Delts. The team always played tough
and opponents never left the field without
a few aches and pains, knowing they had
just played the Fijis in a football game.
Quarterback Mike Petras '80, the league's
leading rusher and passer, was a sparkplug
all season. "Simp" sustained a key thumb
injury during the season but after the
championship game loss Simp said, "We
have no excuses, we played them and we
lost. But we're young and we shouldn't
lose a game next year." The Fijis front
line included Frank 'Bo' Borroni '79, Ken
'Meryl' Cramer '79, Max 'The Dud'
Dudzic '79, Jim 'Cun Cun' Nelson '79,
(Cun came off an outstanding rookie
season to double as team photographer
this year), Peter 'Droll' Pietrandrea '80,
and Big E. Linbergh provided a nice target
at tight end. The backfield had Simp at
QB, Skippy Nixon '79 and Nick 'Buckwheat' Sacco '79. Rick 'Rodent' McLeary
'79 was at split end. These four guys provided the blazing speed needed to field a
good team. All the players went both ways
playing a fast, aggressive offense and an
equally aggressive and stingy defense.
In Basketball, the team's efforts were
rewarded with a championship. The
starting lineup was short (no one over 6
but played a tough man to man defense,
using hustle and determination which re1
)
suited in plent/ of steals and enough rebounds to keep the game at a fast pace.
The team was in good shape and few teams
could keep running with them for the
entire game. The Fijis played very well
together and Coach Linbergh used his
fantastic bench to utilize the team's speed
t~ the fullest. The Phi Garns were sparked
by their two ace gunners Rodent McLeary
and Sparky Law who both turned in a few
20 point games. Sparky was our outside
shooter while the opposition couldn't
find the defense that could stop Dent
from driving to the hoop. The rest of the
team who turned in consistent performances throughout the season include:
Chaz Lazar, whose quickness and hustle
was always crowd pleasing, Mick Veen,
Corky Cororan, Quake McNea~ and Skippy
Nixon porvided most of the rebounds and
Coach Nardone and Monk Seguiti added
quick, good-shooting guard action. All in
all it measured up to a championship
season.
Fiji Wrestling also provided some wins.
Bob Shwarz '78 took the heavyweight
crown and Ted McLain '78 won the 185
lbs. class.
The outlook for spring looks good. We
will field a respectable track team and
have most of the players returning from a
championship softball team. With a strong
spring showing we should put the Intramural trophy where it can stay for awhile,
in the FRATERNITY of PHI GAMMA
DELTA.

Financial Plight
Explained
Economic hardship has affected most
of us over the past decade, with inflation
being one of our major problems. Pi
Chapter House has also become a victim
of this economic problem. As utility costs
rose and insurance payments soared, the
financial management of the Pi Chapter
House has become too much for its House
Corporation to manage.
Pi Chapter House has become needy
of repairs to meet new fire insurance
standards. If these repairs were made, the
insurance payments could have been reduced considerably. The kitchen in the
Chapter House also needs major repairs,
with the need for replacement of some of
the equipment. The rent from the undergraduate brothers living in the Chapter
House has not been enough to pay the
insurance payments or the utility bills,
not to mention their inability to finance
the needed repairs.
Taking all this into consideration, the
House Corporation has decided to sacrifice
the ownership of the Chapter House to
another party, that will be better able to
handle the financial responsibilities involved with the Chapter House. Turning
first to International Headquarters of Phi
Gamma Delta and meeting with rejection,
they were left with one alternative, Allegheny College. We hope that Allegheny
can help us in our present state of financial
instability.
Presently the House Corporation and
Allegheny College are negotiating to
reach an agreement, whereby, the ownership of the Chapter House will be relinquished to Allegheny College with
hopes of better financial management of
Chapter House business and the renovation of the existing house. Further information concerning this deed transfer will
be issued once all transactions have been
completed.
Kenneth L. Cramer
One of the reasons for our present
financial plight, which has necessitated
our present negotiations with the college,
concerning the sale of our house, has been
our inability to raise any substantial
amount of cash from our alumni.
In ApriL 1977, I sent a letter to all PI
Chapter Alumni (approximately 750) requesting donations. We received donations
from 23 alumni, totaling $1,079.00. This
money was used to pay the balance of the
old "kitchen debt," and $600.00 was
turned over to House Corporation
Treasurer, Tom Wigton to help meet
current expenses.
In this issue of the PI Crust you will
find the names of all present members of
the House Corporation. I know they
would be interested in receiving any comments you may have regarding our present
situation.
Any help concerning future operation
of the Chapter House would be appreciated. My home address is 864 Leslie Road,
Mead ville, PA 16335.

P.L.
Dear Brothers,
It is with extreme pleasure that I express my thoughts to you as President of
this house in our first edition of the Pi
Crust in 1978. My Brothers have bestowed
an honor upon me; one that I will always
remember with pride and gratitude. My
predecessor, Phil Spina, left this office in
great shape, which made the turnover easy
for myself and cabinet. We Brothers know
he has done a great job, bu.t I want our
Graduate Brothers to know also. I would
like to take this occasion, on behalf of the
entire Brotherhood to express a much
deserved thanks for a job well done.
The most important issue we face at
this time is the proposed selling of our
house to the college. Our House Corporation no longer has enough money to pay
ever increasing taxes, an extremely high
insurance rate and house improvements.
They have endlessly tried to keep up with
the mounting costs, but it is impossible to
do so any longer. The Nationals do not
want to own the house and recent fundraising letters have failed to produce any
substantial amount of money although we
appreciate the money we did receive. It
seems that many Graduate Brothers have
become disillusioned or disinterested with
Pi Chapter in the last ten years. Our goal
has been to find and correct the reasons
for the decayed Undergraduate-Graduate
Brother relationship. We have been moving
steadily in that direction, but we need your
help, Brothers. As it looks now, we are
beyond financial help through any type
of Graduate Brother fund raiser. What we
need and want now more than anything,
is your opinion and advice. We believe
this is a very big move to sell the house to
the college. It will never be owned by Pi
Chapter again. There are over sevenhundred Graduate Brothers spread
throughout the country. We want everyone of them to know the situation before
any final papers are signed. So once again,
we are asking you, our Graduate Brothers,
to summon up all the pride you now have
or you once had in our Fraternity and let
us know how you feel. We do not blame
any of you for becoming disenchanted in
recent years; it is completely understandable. But give us a chance to improve our
relationship. We want to, and we know
that you do too.
We are working on the following goals
and objectives this year: to continue to
improve our Graduate Brother relationship, to improve Fraternity-Community
relationship through community activity,
to strengthen our rush program, to learn
more about our ritual and history, and to
educate the pledges with that knowledge,
and most important of all to us, to remain
the closest and proudest Brotherhood on
this or any other college campus. Recently,
we have participated in a Mother's March
of Dimes, held a party for underprivileged
local children, sponsored a local midget
football team at a Gator football game,
entertaining them afterwards. We are wellknown for our enthusiasm at basketball
games and won the prize this year for
Most Enthusiastic Supporters. We have

··Fiji Sportsmen
The 1977 Alleghe:rw Football team was
again dominated by Fijis. Seventeen
brothers and thirteen pledges dressed
every Saturday, while thirteen brothers
were in the starting line up. The defense
was anchored by end Dick Boughton '78,
tackles Bob Schwarz '78, and Gary Krup
'80, and guard Dennis Zimmerman '78.
Backing up the down linemen were linebacker Gregg McNeal '78, halfbacks Chas
Lazar '79 and Jeff Pinkham '78, and
safety Sparky Law '79. The offense was
led by co-captain Phil Spina '78, at center
and Mick Veon '79 at guard. Wide receiver
Fred Seguiti '80, fullback Rooster Madonia
'79, and place kicker-running back Nick
Nardone '79 handled the ball in the backfield. Brothers Greg Popovich '80, Tom
Chandler '80, Ted McClain '78, and Tim
Corcoran '80 also saw action. Pledge
gridders included Randy Reimold '81,
Mike Miller '81, Mike Giangiordano '81,

The basketball team relies heavily on

Brother Greg Popovich '80, and pledges

he and Tim Dougan went on to wrestle in

Year's
par ty
A new young crowd partied at the Fiji
House this past term. The Program for
Education Enrichment and Recreation
(PEER) and our chapter sponsored a
dance for underprivileged children aged
7-12 from Meadville.
About 50 children enjoyed the
festivities at their "New Years Party."
They arrived at the house, which was
decorated with balloons and streamers, at
8:00 p.m. for several hours of dancing.
The brothers provided entertainment and
also served pizza and punch.
. This is juts one of the ways Pi Chapter
is involved with the Meadville community,
and we will continue to emphasize public
relations again this term.
