Dear Brothers,
Greetings from 155 South Leonard! As you will discover when reading this newsletter, there is a lot
of activity here around the House.
As you will read in the following pages, the Chapter won not only the Stocksdale Homecoming
Trophy this year but also the first ever presented Ray Barr-Lowell Ditzon Memorial Trophy.
You will also read about our highly successful Rush and how our men dominate William Jewell in
the area of campus participation.
This fall the House received a major facelift to the first floor due in large part to our House Corpora
tion President A. Major Hull and our Mary McCarty Mothers' Club. Any and all support we can
receive from you our Graduate Brothers as we enter a time of fund raising to continue maintaining the
House will be greatly appreciated.

\r\nPhi Gams Hold Responsibility
On The Hill
By Chris Spicer '90
According to the Purple Pilgrim's Twelve
Pledge Promises, each probationer, and later ac
tive Brother, is "To participate in worthy campus
activities.
This promise has been exemplified by the
Chapter; Zeta Phi is expecting to take home the
national Zerman Trophy for campus involvement
at this summer's Ekklisia in Chicago.
In short, when William Jewell College needs
leaders, it turns to the men of Phi Gamma Delta.
Seven campus organizations have Phi Gams as
president.
Take,for example. Cardinal Blazers. The
Blazers work in William Jewell's Admission Of
fice recruiting high school seniors to the college.
This spring, all the men selected as Cardinal
Blazers were Phi Gams—not another single
men's organization on campus had members
selected to serve in this capacity.
Moore '91 is the percussionist for both the Jazz
and Symphonic Bands.
This year's spring play production,"Jabberwock" by James Thurber, also featured Phi
Gams. The play was directed by Dick Brown
'64 and the cast included Scott Anderson '91,
Brother Heaton, Brother Martin, Brother McCoy
and Brother Sumey, who was featured in the
play's leading roll.
Many other Fijis were presidents of their or
ganizations. Mark Daniels '90 was president of
the chemistry honorary. Brother Williams presi
dent of the psychology honorary Doug Day '91
president of Campus Hosts and Randy Shepard
'90 was president of Christian Student Ministries.
Phi Gams also answered the call as Residence
Assistants, once again the only Greek men
selected to do so. Dave Everly '91, Marty Teat
'91, Brother Powell, Brother Walls and Brother
Williams were among Browning Hall's RA Staff.
The Cardinal Blazers are: Dan Belcher '92,
Sean Evans '92, Robb Heaton '92, Mike Hughes

\r\nThe Fraternity of Phi Gamma Delta
Zeta Phi Chapter
Dear Zeta Phi Brothers,
I Hope your summer is going well. I know that it is still early yet but I thought it would be a good idea to let my
brothers know what is going on at the house. The House Corp had a meeting on June 12 and many things were
discussed and I'm pleased to say that the future for 21eta Phi is bright.
The Board approved $50,000 in spending for improvements and to meet necessary financial obligations.(The IRS
can be a real pain.) I was very pleased to see that Mr.Pence received the contract once again and that our projected
date of completion is set for late July. That means that this year (if all goes well) the house will open on schedule
without being in the middle of construction.
The work being done this year is part of a multi-phase plan being prepared by the Board for revitalizing old Zeta
Phi.Thissummers work will include sidewalks, steps, painting emd finish trimming to the exterior ofthe house as well
as a considerable amount of work being done to the inside to bring the house up to and exceeding both Fire Code
and The City of Liberty Housing standards. This is to include dry-walling and painting and insulating the areas under
the roof on the third floor, major repair work to the back stairway, proper lighting of the basement stairway new
keyless entry to the house and much more.Although the work being done this summer is not ofthe cosmetic nature
that last years undertaking was it is considerably more than mere bandaid repair work as has been done in the past.
It has been great to see the work in the garden and the general lawn work kept up so well. This says allot for the
men of Zeta Phi. Keep up the good work. The members of House Corp. are also enthusiastic about what is going
on at our fraternity. I think we are experiencing a great time in the life of our chapter and it is great to be a part of
these changes.
Every coin has two sides and now is the time to look at the other side of this coin. With all of the these changes
there is a need to insure that the improvements made are not damaged so that they must be done again. In view of
that the Board has established some new guidelines that will need to be adhered to. They are as follows.
1. Window air conditioners willnot be allowed. With the installation of all new windows throughout the house
with screens it will not be acceptable to remove these screens and risk losing them or damaging the windows
themselves.
2.Portablespaceheaters willnotbenecessaryorallowed. Ifit is to cold in any one room contact the House Corp
through John Davis and the situation will be remedied immediately.
3. In rooms were work is done this summer there is to be no structuralchanges m those rooms, and any plans
for room work to be done this year will need to take into consideration that with next years work it will all be
changed or destroyed.
4. Cableforcable T. V. willberemovedfrom theindividualrooms. The current trend ofsplicing cable into every
room is not only illegal it is unsightly and unnecessary. Cable will be left in the house for the chapters use. In our
efforts to create an efficient and secure house it is illogical to have screens and windowsleft partialy open to allow
for CTV.
As I said earlier the future is bright. Plans include room renovations with real furniture, central air conditioning,
second and third floor renovations to match the quality of the first floor and maybe some day we will even see a paved
parking lot. Another change that is going to happen is the reinstating of a"House Person". This may be a man or
woman, but it will be someone back at the house. In order for this to happen the need for a"House Persons Room"
\r\nwill be necessary. To do this it will mean that the fu"st floor bedroom will be returned to it's previous use. By no later
than second semester thatroom will need to be vacated, and if,at the return ofschool two positions open in the house,
it will be necessary to make that move as soon as logically possible.I am aware ofthe inconvenience this presents and
the Board was made aware ofit as well, but it was agreed upon that it would be necessary and beneficial to the overall
interest of the fraternity.
The time for Ekklesia is fast approaching and a past Purple Legionnaire has volunteered to attend it to represent
the graduate chapter. For those of you attending I think it would be great for you to meet him while you are there.
His name is Mike Fligg, and he is coming in from Georgia to attend.
I hope that your summer is great and that everyone returns to Zeta Phi safely and ready to take on the challenges
that await us all at WJC and our great chapter ofPhi Gamma Delta.
Respectfully,
Kirk A.Jones
