100 Brothers Attend
Pig Dinner
by Brian Heintz '91
The 83rd Annual Norris Pig Dinner was a great success
Graduate Brothers attending the
reception at the Gateway Center
as 100 graduate brothers returned to 325 Ash Avenue.
Many friendships were renewed, and old memories and
stories came to life as these brothers gathered together
for the annual weekend.
Archon President Dick McCormick '61 was the featured
speaker for the dinner. He has spoken at 20 Pig Dinners
so far, hut "this one was the hardest because people real
ly know who you are."
Brother McCormick told of the tough junior year he en
dured at Iowa State. He had a knee operation, fractured
his skull because he ran into a car while riding a '47 Harley for the first time, and lost his drivers license for 60
days because he altered it to be of the legal drinking age.
McCormick also borrowed a car and took a girl to park at
a remote construction site. They got stuck in the mud and
had to call the brothers to get out. After unsuccessful at
tempts, one of the brothers decided that he could operate
a crane and get the car out. The police showed up and the
brothers took off for home. When they arrived at the
FIJI house, they found the police waiting for them be
cause they traced the license plate.
The Fort Dodge native may have had a rough junior
year, but he is doing very well now. As Archon President
he has to identify the problems that Phi Gamma Delta is
facing.
"The single most difficult problem to solve is the hous
ing problem because it takes huge amounts of money,"
McCormick said. "Twenty five percent of the chapters
have houses that are in good shape, 50 percent of the
houses are dumps and 25 percent don't have houses."
Brother McCormick said that the real reason he is in
volved with Phi Gamma Delta is because he joined the
house in 1957 as raw material.
"I'm living proof that we didn't just pledge face men,"
McCormick said. "They stressed the cornerstones of hos
pitality, unity, secrecy and scholarship to me over and
over. They developed me as a person and an individual
in four years. 1 can't say 'No' to Phi Gamma Delta be
cause someone took a chance on me.

Those of you who attended the 1991 Pig Dinner festivi
ties hopefully had as enjoyable a time as did I. I want to
thank all of you graduate brothers for coming back for
whatever your reasons. Also I want to thank all of you
who make comments about the general format of the day.
It does seem as if the comments were overwhelmingly fa
vorable. Also we owe a lot of thanks to the undergraduate
members for working very hard to put on a "show" that
we graduates would like. We are very fortunate in hav
ing an undergraduate chapter that really tries to do their
best at whatever they do and this Pig Dinner was excel
lent. My fervent hope is that many more will come back
next year and enjoy the good time.
The business meeting of the house corp>oration was
well attended and after the formal reports many good
questions were raised. In summarizing the meeting, al
though we have come a long way in the past year toward
making our chapter one of the top ten nationally in Phi
Gamma Delta, we have a way to go. We will all need to
do our part as best as we can. Some of us are closer to the

of dealing with a young chapter. Besides the influence you

assisted in other ways. The Chapter is currently waiting
to see if it receives permission to build on campus.
"Not all the houses that want to build on campus are go
ing to get the opportunity to do so," Toot said. "The Uni
versity does not want an 'overbalance' of Greek Houses in
comparison to resident hall population. All we can do
right now is wait and see if we will be allowed on, in the
meantime I am helping the House Corporation raise funds
for the potential of a new house."
Brother Toot served as Recording Secretary and song

Sometimes working with a sorority is not all it's
cracked up to be. Sometimes you are better off doing
things by yourself.
Take Varieties for example. Varieties is a musical skit
that is 20 minutes long and Greek houses compete to be in
the top nine. If they are in the top nine, they get to per
form in front of an audience in the Great Hall of the Me
morial Union.
Phi Gamma Delta hadn't participated in Varieties for
several years, but in 1987 the Fiji's entered the competi
tion by themselves. Normally a fraternity and a sorority
are together, but the men of Phi Gamma Delta defied the
odds and placed in the top nine. Under the direction of

"1 went in and pulled back a curtain to look at a red cor

when I saw this black diamond on the floor underneath a
