\r\nNEW CABINET
PRESlDENrS LETTER
As / leave office, having served my term as presi
dent at Xi Deuteron, I'd like tp be able to leave an
instant success formula for the incoming officers
(here or at any other chapter) - a sure fire plan that
would make everything go right for the chapter, all
the time, in all situations.
Of course, this is not possible. Each administration
is unique in its composition, substituents, and situa
tions. Our ritual inspires the lasting continuity within
the fraternity, but the day to day interactions inside
a chapter must be dealt with on an individual basis.
I propose two concepts that may prove helpful in
running an effective administration:
1. You must be able to deal with people on a per
sonal level. This is best approached by considering
that every man is your superior, in that you may
learn from him. An open mind and an open heart
willprove essential tools for effective communica
tion.
2. In running a self-assessment of the chapter,
don't rely on the glitter of past accomplishments to
last very long. More important than determining
what has been done is the question "Where are we
going (as a chapter)?" If the answer isn't satisfac
tory, do something about it. Establish realistic goals
During elections held December 2, Xi Deuteron
appointed its new cabinet for the coming year.
Ramon Pla was elected president. Ramon is from
University Heights, Ohio, a junior, pre-med, and
actively involved in the university's anesthesia assis
tant cirricula.
Marc Merklin, our new treasurer, hails from Can
ton and is the only cabinet member from our
sophomore class. Marc is a pre-professional scholar
in law with accounting abilities highly touted among
the brothers and the university administration as

HOUSE REPAIRS
Purchased In 1949, the Xi Deuteron house ol
11317 Bellflower has faithfully served several
generations of Phi Gams here at Case Western
Reserve. This is still the case, but major repairs will
be required in the near future.
Since the 1975 fire, the House Corporation finan
cial reserves have not been adequate to cover more
than the most desperately needed of our major
repairs. This has caused some of the less major
repairs to be aggravated into true problem situa
tions that will require substantial financial input to
correct. A few of these problems include interior
wall repairs, sectional carpet replacement, profes
sional carpet cleaning, compoundirig plumbing

By convention, the rent charged the

\r\nBrother Coleman A. Foster (CWRU '53) gave us a

4 January 19S0
Dear Mr. Han:
Your interview with Brother Dewitt Cogswell in
your most recent issue was one that 1found both in
teresting and - certainly in One respect
-simultaneously amusing and a bit frustrating. I'll
elaborate on that.
From the period of World War I until just a bit less
than five years ago my father, Clyde T. Foster, was
very active in Xi Deuteron affairs. The Fraternity
was only one of many civic and fraternal activities
of my father and in these areas, as well as in
business, he was forever being confused with
Claude Foster. This confusion apparently still
chases him after paying Charon his boat fare.
Now Claude Foster was indeed a relative, Clyde's
second cousin. Claude however probably did not
have opportunity to pursue his education far
beyond the eighth grade. He used to tell us
youngsters that he worked full-time from the age
14. Lack of education certainly did not stand in
Claude's way when it came to making it big in

Across the decades from the teens to the 70's these
