numbers were down from the average.
This is a compliment to the hard work of
Rush Chairs Jamie Justice '00, and Wally
Haggard '(H).
Brothers Brian Shova '01 and Mike
Deimling '00 took it upon themselves to
plan our first annual Fiji Day, which was an
opportunity for all the brothers to enjoy a
day together and get the purple blood
flowing. The day was filled with activities
including a softball game, and Fiji Feud,
similar to the game show "Family Feud,"
but with Phi Gam trivia and facts compiled
by Irv Katz '99.
During the University's Parents
Weekend, we held our annual reception
and open house and welcomed many
parents who came from near and far to see
the chapter house at 11317 Bellflower.
Thanks to Graduate Relations Chair Adarsh
Mantravadi '01 for setting up a great
afternoon.
On an athletic note, the Fiji intramural
soccer team capped off an undefeated
season with a victory in the championship
game, continuing our quest for the AllSports trophy awarded for intramural
excellence. Hard work by Intramural Chair
Jordan Bedford '01 has helped the Phi
Gams be among the fraternity intramural
leaders.

negative publicity that fraternities across
the country have been receiving recently.
We established a public relations/campus
involvement committee, headed by Mike
Deimling '00 and Jai Macker '00, and have
many brothers involved in a variety of
activities and organizations such as
University Student Goverrunent (USG), the
Alpha Phi Omega service fraternity.
Gamma Sigma Alpha, the Alpha Kappa Psi
business fraternity, the WRUW radio
station, and the Observer. It's been great to
see Phi Gams in prominent positions
throughout campus, and getting their
fellow brothers excited and active in the
community.
As the Fall 1998 semester winds down,
the brothers are constantly busy with
midterms, finals, and trying to enjoy the
final days of sun before the winter weather
sets in. If you were unable to stop in for
our Smoker weekend, please feel free to
drop by the house on Bellflower at any
time! We are always excited when we see
graduates return as proof that Phi Gamma
Delta is indeed not for college days alone.
Curtis Kadohama '99
"No alcohol!? What do you MEAN, no
alcohol? How do you expect us to Rush
without having kegs every weekend?
Fratemities asked these questions when the
IFC presented a "Dry Rush" policy to the
Homecoming weekend brought about
fraternities last year. Instead of whining,
Smoker and the return of many graduates,
both young and old. Everyone enjoyed a
fine evening of cards and brotherhood and
allowed many of the graduates to come
back and relive their collegedays and
memories. This event was made possible
by the planning of Adarsh Mantravadi '01
however, we sat down and put together a
and Corresponding Secretary Andy
Horrigan '99.
This semester we are making it our goal
promising Fall Rush, without incorporating
any alcohol. The question remained,
however, will it work? ..."
"At the end of Rush, after the dust had
cleared, 15 men had accepted their bids to
pledge Phi Gamma Delta. We considered
this quite a success for our chapter, because
not only did we pledge all of the guys we
were most impressed with, we proved that
to increase campus involvement as well as
Rush can be effective without serving
publicizing the many positive things that
Phi Gamma Delta does, in the light of much
alcohol...."

Dan Turner '91 reported recently from
his orthopaedics rotation. Being at Fort

he sees the results of many practice
jumps—broken ankles, legs, etc. He thinks
he's already seen more of this trauma than
he will ever see in his future family
practice. While tending to one trooper who
broke both his left leg bones Dan noticed
the letters on his ankle. In spite of the pain
the trooper gave Dan the handshake and
advised he was initiated at Rhode Island.
Dan also met £m Ohio University Fiji—his
company commander. While in the
commander's office Dan noticed a picture of
the brothers in front of the O.U. house.
They exchanged the grip and were
suddenly long-lost buddies. Dan's
pediatric rotation will be in May and will
likely interfere with his annual trip back to
the great land of Cleveland. Dan expects to
return to Cleveland permanently no earlier
