RUSH.RETREAT
The day of December 10,'1979 dawned bright and
clear for Rho'Pho. Tension buitt throughout the day
for the brothers, until at last the lists were issued
late in the afternoon, affirming what the brothers had
expected all along; th6 men in purple had again
taken the best pledge Class on campus. On Bid
Monday and the following week, 21 young men ,2 ot
them sophomores, donned the white star. There was
no doubt in anyone's mind that these 21 were the
very best of an outstanding freshman class. The new

After everyone on campus learned of our success
through a rousing set of bim-bams, over 100 brothers
and guests drove to the house for dinner.
Among those in attendance were P.L. "Narc"
Myers, (R-ose '74); Archon Secretary, Don Mighell
(Texas '56); Dr. Frank Guthrie (Hanover '50); and
"Dirty Bob" Harker (lowa St. '43), who did not
disappoint the brothers yelling "Jokes!"
The enthusiastic pledges did not hesitate to tub
everyone in the house at least once. Rush chairm?o,
"Cat" Balu '81 found his way in four times, although
Bobo Froetscher ('80) is helped.into the tub by the new pledges.
Ol course, the PledgeActlve Football Classlc had lts stars. Here
"O.J." Peterson, pursued by pledge Danny Hodgos, bursts around
right end and prances lor the sidelines.
he only remembers two (after the J.D.). All in all, the
brothers were very excited about the new pledge
class, and happy that their hard work during Rush
had paid off.
The site for Retreat this year was Turkey Run
State Park. On hand to referee the football game
(Con't. on Page 2)
\r\n(Con't. f rom Page 1)
were Jeff Wells ('79) and Clark Fort\rne ('78). Other
grads at Retreat included Dave Myers ('74), Tom
Frank ('76), Mark Ress ('76), Don Mighell and Steve
Fahrguhar ('771.
There were several notable moments during the
game. John Peterson'.s ('81) running was truly
inspirational (to the pledges), as was the
performance of the "Special Ed" teams for the
actives. The pledges found the actives 50-man goalline defense tough to crack, but fared well with the
pledges class-left play and the f lea-f licker to referee
Wells from Kent Eaton. ln the end, however, the
pledges were unable to match the arm of Jack
Wickham ('80), the ferocious active defense, and the
off iciating, Etld fell by the score of 21-14.
Retreat was again the site for the formal pledging
of the winter pledges, as well as the standard Don
Mighell speech on the meaning of pledgeship. His
words were taken to heart, especially "make Phi
Gamma Delta a better place because you were in it."
The brothers then broke up for the informal group
sessions about the chapter, the most meaningful
part of retreat. Each pledge then stood bef ore
ev€!'yone to report on what his group had discussed.
Each did very well. Kurt Knable highlighted his talk
with a physical interpretation of "l f lip for Fiji!"
Everyone then began the annual orgy of poker,
backgammoo, wrestling, and quiet discussions that
lasted until dawn. The sun came up much too early
the next day, but the brotherhood gained that
weekend is something that will last as long as life
itself endures.

DEAR GRADUATES,
Seeing as how lwill soon be joining your ranks, I
would like to reflect back and see where our chapter
is heading. One area that we have made a big turn
around is Scholarship, and this is the one
accomplishment that I am most proud of. Since the
time I entered the chapter as a pledge in the Winter
of 1977, we have raised our cumulative grade point
average from fourth to first on the Rose Campus.
This honor comes as the result of the constant
tually waste away to nothing. I remind you however,
that self-pride and the feeling of self-accomplishment are the true rewards for hard work. The medals,
the silver, and the immediate glory mean nothing
and should in no way become part of our purpose.
what a brother once said is true: "\Ninning awards
doesn't make a good chapter; Good chapters win
awards." Let us strive to better ourselves for the
purpose of pride, accomplishment and the ability to
say in a shining light, "Damn proud to be a Fiji."
Yours Always in the Mystic Tie,
Andrew D. Gavrilos
Chapter President
SOCIAL EVENTS
The first party of the second quarter was held on
December 8th. Rage played, featuring grad brother
Dave "Narc" Meyers on lead guitar.
on December 15, the Rho Phi Ghapter held their
annual infamous Christmas party. Santa Clausalopolous, "unknown" brother, handed out numerous
humorous and random gifts.
On January 19, 1980, after many hours of diligent
effort concentrated toward the intelligent dubbing of
an appropriate name for the pa(y, the social
committee achieved this superior nominclature:
"Someone forgot to name the Fiji party-Party." Of
course, it was great!!
1121 S. 6th St. was the site of THE party on
January 26th. This party was none other than the

efforts of the under-graduate members and I
congratulate them all. I would hope that the
emphasis on scholarship would continue.
Probably the most outstanding trait that our
chapter has, is its diversification. Each and every
member is unique in his own way and is treated as
such, thus giving us a broad base to work from. I
would encourage the chapter to continue its
success in serving the lnstitute as leaders of the
various clubs, organizalions, honoraries and athtetic
teams. This type of practice does nothing but
broaded the skills of each brother and at the same
time strengthen the chapter through the variety of
personalities.
To the Brothers of the Chapter, I would like to
thank you for giving me the opportunity to serve as
chapter president during the past year. ln leaviDg, I
would ask you to always strive to better yourselves.
A chapter that continually rests on past laurels and
forfeits the opportunity to advance forward will even-
dreaded lnstallation Party, with the double dreaded
Purple Passion. As usual, the new officers were duly
installed.
Alpine Fiji was also great fun this year as a huge
snow slide was built on the front lawn. Many people
got to'taste'Terre Haute snow literally. Many
brothers and co-eds had a great time.
Febru ary 7th marked a special occasion at Rho
Phi as the women of Delta Gamma sorority invaded
our house clad in their sleepwear. The Pajama Trade
party was a lot of fun as both and DG sisters had a
great time.
The last social event of the quarter was Purple
Garter. This annual formal was a huge success as
\r\nthe day. Each participant attended a small discussion gloup_ follotilihg the opening speech on Ritual
given by Bill Mifler. The groupl discussed such
things as rqsh, pledge education, treasurery, etc.
one note of interest was that the Rho phi chapier
was the only Indiana chapter which openly argued
against hazing.

Followilg- the discussions there was a happy
hour with informal discussions which atso prorbi

and Bill Martin (a new member of the HeabiuarGrs
staff) was.the keynotg speaker. Finally the g6ta cup
was awarded to the Zeta chapter at l.u. after being
held by the Rho Phi Chapter last year.
AII in all it was a pleasant and informative day.

WINTER SPORTS
At the end of the fall intramural sports campaign
Phi Gamma Delta found itself in the thick of thd race
for the intramural spgrts trophy. unfortunately, Fiji,s
winter sports teams have not had quite the success
that the fall sports had.
we'll start the sad tale with any Hoosiers favorite
sport, basketball. The major team had to be
disbanded halfway through the schedule due to
sickness and injury. The "AA" team played well but
faced some excellent competition 'ano ended up

STATE DAY
State Day was held this year in February 2nd at
the columbia club on the circle in lndianapolis. The
following men represented the Rho phi ihapter at
the event: Art Schultz, Gary Stephens, Bill Johnson,
Doug shull, Brad Larrick, Frank Gavrilos, and Mike
Schipper. Also in attendance were John peterson,
Howard Menser, and Andy Gavrilos.
This year's state Day was a shortened version of
last year's with Chapter leadership being the topic of
with only two wins against f ive losses.
The big surprises were the minor ,,G,' team and,
of course, the "meat squad." The rninor ..G', team
displayed excellent skills and teamwork on it,s way
to a 4-3 record. The "meat squad,' put together a
"perfect" record for the th ird consecutiie yo ,,
under coach Andy Gavrilos the squad hacked'anL

the Rose-Hulman lntramural Hall of tnfamy.

flowever, none of them were able to quite reach their
full potential. Both the minor handicap and minor
scratch teams had records of 5-16, but inis was still
better than the major scratch team's record of 4-14.
Rho Phi had a double entry in the "meat squad',
qate_0ory with one team headed by Andy ,,Greek"
Gavrilos and the other by Briad ,,cdt,, Baiu. ,,cat,s,,
team went the season without a win, but the season
was not without it's hi.ghpoints. occasionally one of
the meat squad's members would best one member
of the opposing team .
The final area of athletic endeavor for the winter
season was volleyball. The major team was
absolutgly mediocre as they defeateil sigma Nu and
a pair of freshmen teams on their way to i 3-4 record.
without a doubt, o highlight of tha winter was the
minor volleyball team. This team was undefeated
until their next to last match in which they took on
another undefeated team representing t_i
