This special edition of Bulldog Fiji is designed to share
with all brothers the honor, excitement, and gratitude ex
perienced this past summer at Ekklesia by this chapter.
Every brother who has ever passed through the portals of
Sigma Mu owns a part of the most prestigious award this
chapter has ever received - the Cheney Cup. The Cheney
Cup is given to the Phi Gam chapter that proves to be the
most efficient.
Through a well balanced program of
leadership, scholarship, service, social, and intramurals,
Sigma Mu has lived up to its motto - "Toward Excellen
ce."
The site of edition number 132 of Ekklesia was the fair
city of Nashville, Tennessee. Ceremonies, meetings, and
seminars filled the Opryland Hotel during the week of
August 12 - 16. Archon President Louis A. "Bud"

On Thursday night, in the Nashville Lobby of the
Opryland Hotel, the Ekklesia Banquet was held. Lee M.
Moss (Tennessee '73) was the Toastmaster of this event.
The presentation of the Cheney Cup to Sigma Mu took
place at this banquet. The numerous brothers of this cha
pter who attended Ekklesia wished that every brother
could have experienced this tremendous event.
Since the founding of the Delta Colony of the Fraternity
of Phi Gamma Delta on April 20, 1969, this chapter has
flourished and prospered in all directions. Sigma Mu
should be proud of its achievements, but we cannot rest
upon the past. We must build for the future. It took years
of hard work and true dedication to reach this point in the
history of this chapter. Let's keep this tradition of ex
cellence up.

THE CHENEY CUP GRADUATE VIEW
The 1980 Ekklesia held in Nashville will long be remem
bered as the first time Sigma Mu won the Cheney Cup.
Congratulations are certainly in order to the current un
dergraduate membership of our fraternity whose efficient
operation of our chapter brought this highly esteemed
honor to Mississippi State.
As Section Chief for this area for the past four years, 1
have had a unique opportunity to closely observe the
operation and activities of our chapter above and beyond
the years I spent with it as an undergraduate. Because of
this, I have been able to watch as the chapter has developed
and progressed. I believe that all graduates should be
made aware, that although some things such as its house
location have changed at Sigma Mu, the truly important
ideas and motivations are no different in 1980 than they
were ten years ago when we were chartered. Scholarship is
still valued and given top priority; service to the com
munity is still given its proper place of importance; and
leadership at Mississippi State is still the domain of the Phi
Gams in most student government areas and campus
organizations. A first place finish again this year in

incredible list of campus offices held is proof enough of
the above mentioned assertion.

tuning of the programs, methods of operation, and
traditions of the chapter that exists today. Each of our
graduates have played an important part in building the
structure and organization that supports Sigma Mu during
this current academic year.
For that reason, every
graduate should not only feel the pride that winning the
Cheney Cup evokes, but should also feel a sense of
satisfaction that his own individual efforts and ideas have

would work toward winning the Cheney Cup at Fiji

The first presentation of awards was at the scholarship

second for both fall and spring semesters last year, but
finished first when both QPA's were combined for the
whole year. Alpha Gamma Rho, an agricultural fraternity

spring than they were in the fall, and better than the
university average.

THE RUSHED
SUMMER
The fall semester began, as all fall semesters do, with the
Rush Workshop. August 23rd & 24th were the days set
aside to be spent on preparation for the upcoming week.
Brothers met at Lake Tiak-O-Khata Saturday morning
and began preparation for the week ahead. Many of the
chapter's strong points were discussed as were the areas
which needed improvement. Richard McRee and Robert
Siedell also gave their insight and advice taken from ex
perience as "prime" rushers.
The program lasted well into Sunday and served to
prepare the chapter to face rush with a positive attitude
and confidence in Phi Gamma Delta.
During the week of rush a series of informal parties were
scheduled following the formal parties at the Phi Gam
The outworking of an entire year's plans began to take
shape in July as the first of the summer rush parties began.
Much work went into this year's rush program at the Phi
Gam House and the results speak for themselves.
The kick-off of the summer rush program was July 12th.
Rushees and brothers from around the state met in
Jackson for a full day of enjoyment. The day began on the
House. These parties, given at Bowen Flower's and Mark
McDonald's, turned out to be a key effort in our rush
program. This enabled the rushees and brothers to get out
of the strict routine of the formal parties and to have a
chance to really meet each other. These parties were the
beginning of many friendships which have since become
brotherhood.

INTRAMURALS
SENATE ELECTIONS
UNDERWAY
Fall 1980 finds Sigma Mu once again active in in
tramural sports. Looking back on last year's accomplish
ments, we placed fifth overall in All-School competition not bad for an organization that barely ranks in the Top
Twenty on campus in size!
Starting off the semester in Phi Gam style, we have four
football teams this year. That Fiji Bunch, Chaos,
Warriors, and Lagnaf represent us on the playing field.
That Fiji Bunch has much talent, but is off to a slow start
after losing 21 - 0 to the Sigma Chis and 42 - 36 to the
Lambda Chis in double overtime. Chaos and the Warriors
are both 2- 0, and play in the same league. If they keep
winning, it could be Brother vs. Brother for the league
championship. LAGNAF is composed mainly of pledges
and seems to be learning the ropes little by little.
The Fiji Aces and Fiji Wormburners wore the purple
shirts onto the tennis courts and golf course. Bowen
Flowers, R.J. Prescott, and Vic Ross are still winning in
tennis, with Hayes Johnson and Bob Cozart as the lone
survivors in golf.
Coming soon will be tennis doubles, table tennis,
racquetball, and an old Fiji favorite, pillo polo. Watch for
big things to develop as the Fijis continue to participate
and win in intramural sports.
Perry Cliburn, a senior Chemical Engineering and
Business Administration major from Jackson, is Phi
Gamma Delta's newest addition to the Student Association
Senate. Perry was recently elected to the senate post along
with fifteen other day student candidates. When asked
about his plans for the upcoming school year, Cliburn
stated that he would like to see senior exemptions rein
stated and the ground works for a minors program started
on campus. Although he has never served on the SA
Senate, Perry is very enthusiastic about his new appoin
tment. "I'm really fired up about being given the oppor
tunity to serve the Fijis and other day students," he said.
The men of Phi Gamma Delta congratulate Perry on his
nomination and look forward to being well represented on
the senate again this year.
