WINTER 1985
PRESIDENT'S REPORT
Dear Brothers,
Following a tragic year that included the loss of
our chaptfer house as well as the sad loss of one of
our brothers, the Zeta Deuteron Chapter^has turned
its eyes toward the future. I would like to thank, on
behalf of the Brothers, all of the Phi Gam chapters
who sent their condolences and offered support.
However, it is now time to put these events behind us
and move on to building a better and stronger
chapter.
After many lean years, I am happy to report that
the Rush of '84 has yielded fourteen pledges. I
believe that this group will enhance our chapter by
providing a stronger foundation for future leadership
and growth. They have already shown their en
thusiasm and appear willing and wanting to learn the
ways of Phi Gamma Delta. Stimulated by a revitaliz
ed Pledge Education Program, headed by Brothers
Tony McCann and Tom Murray, our pledges are fast
on their way to becoming a useful and intricate part
of our chapter.
The chapter house is now in the primary stages of
rebuilding. Although almost all the interior was lost,
the exterior walls remain standing, providing a start
ing point for the rebuilding process. Our goal of
reopening the house by January 1986 is realistic, pro
vided that support is given not only to our chapter,
but also to our House Corporation.
Financially, for the first time in many years, our
chapter is without any outstanding debts. Since we
are still an active chapter in the W&L community,
the brothers still enjoy the benefits of FIJI parties
and social gatherings.
Although the loss of the house has hindered our
progress, our chapter has proven to be strong enough
to endure these problems. We are a unified group,
but still need graduate support. I invite any Phi Gam
who is traveling through Lexington, Virginia to stop
by and meet the brothers. I would also like to en
courage all the graduate brothers to make plans for
attending our Annual Norris Pig Dinner: May 10.
The brothers of Zeta Deuteron look forward to see
ing you in Lexington.
Fraternally,
Alex Castelli '86
Chapter President

\r\nSOCIAL LIFE STILL STRONG
Although the Zeta Deuteron chapter of Phi Gam
ma Delta has had to continue without a house, the
social aspect of the fraternity has faired extremely
well. Our annual rush parties lasted well into October
and resulted in a strong pledge class of fourteen fine
men. The Kamikazi Party, Imported Beers Party,
Mad Dog Party, and of course, the famous Possum
Punch Party were all excellent parties during rush.
Homecoming Weekend was held on October 12-14
this year and was the occasion for yet another
outstanding social weekend for the FIJIS of
Washington and Lee. The weekend was highlighted
during half-time of the Homecoming football game
when the Homecoming queen was crowned. The Phi
Gamma Delta representative, Lisa Ewing of Hollins
College, was escorted by brother Dwayne Graddy and
was chosen first runner-up to the Homecoming
queen.
The main FIJI party held in the fall term was our
traditional Halloween party called "Heaven and
1984-1985 PLEDGES
Hell." The party featured the band "The Shirts" and
was well attended by all brothers, many friends, and
a large number of women from the various local
women's colleges. Most of those in attendance were
properly dressed for the occasion, especially the
pledges who were outfitted as either devils or angels.
The pledges were responsible for running the kegs,
pouring shots of bourbon, handing out bottles of
champagne, and mixing the grain punch. This party
provided a great time for everyone.
Another big fall term party thrown by the Phi
Gams took place during Parents' Weekend. The
weekend s activities centered around our cocktail par
ty held at our advisor Dick Sessom's house. Many of
the Deans of the University and numerous faculty
members attended the party. The party gave our

With 1984 past, Zeta Deuteron made sure that
they started 1985 out properly. On January 18 the
brothers rented a bus and travelled to Greensboro,
North Carolina for a Bruce Springsteen concert.
Almost every brother made the trip, and none of
them were disappointed. Our semiformal party which
is called "Champagnes" soon followed. All the
brothers and their dates enjoyed a fantastic dinner

with an open bar which was followed by a long night
of dancing and partying.
Many other major events are scheduled for the
coming months. There are parties such as the Saint
Patrick's Day Green Grain Party, Fiji Islands, and
the Alumni Norris Pig Dinner on May 10 as well as
numerous other parties. The FIJIS of Washington
and Lee welcome any other FIJI to stop in and join
us any time because 1985 promises to be a good year.

\r\nFIJI SPORTS
The athletic fields have always been an area where
the Phi Gams have been able to show their force,
and this year is no different. There is a FIJI on
almost every intercollegiate team at Washington and
Lee, and so far, with the fall season completed and
the winter season underway, there have been many
highlights.
There were seven FIJIS helping the Generals foot
ball team compile a 6-4 mark on the way to a record
fifth-straight winning season. Senior noseguard Jim
Lyall and junior defensive tackle Alex Castelli return
ed as second-year starters to lead the defensive
charge. Paul Abbott, a sophomore defensive end,
also saw a lot of playing time for the Generals. On
offense, junior split end Hugh Finkelstein started and
pulled down three touchdown receptions as well as
many other catches. Pledges Jim Cockey, Brad
Preston, and Dick Andrews also finished successful
seasons on the gridiron. Finally, due to his outstand
ing year at tackle, Alex Castelli was voted captain of
it
the team for next year.
Although we did not field as many players for
our other fall sports. Phi Gamma Delta still turned
in some strong performances. Junior Jim Foley, in
returning to the cross-country team for his third
season, participated in many Generals' victories.
Pledge John Coll became one of only three freshmen
to make the varsity soccer squad where he played
often, hoping to become a starter in the coming
years.
By the time the fall season had ended, the basket
ball team was ready to start their season. Led by
starting forward Jeff Harralson, only a sophomore at
Zeta Deuteron, the Generals hoops team is now in a
tie for second place in our conference. The season is
only half-played and the Generals hope to gain the
number-one spot in the conference. On the wrestling
mats, Jim Foley is helping the grapplers begin their
year with some wins. And in winter track sophomore
Tom Murray returns as the premiere Washington and
Lee shotput man. Winter sports look good for the
FIJIS and the brothers should all have great success.
REMEMBER
The Pig Dinner will be held Alumni Weekend
on May 10. If you would like to attend, please
read the editor's letter for more information.

ZETA DEUTERON EXCELS IN ROTO

many brothers partake in all the other advantages the
Army has to offer. Brothers Tony McCann, Arthur

undefeated with a 3-0 record this year. The Zeta

year returns with all but one member. This squad
will be led by senior Captain Jim Lyall. The only
other team presently in action, the ping-pong team
led by Jim Kelly, is hard at work trying to make the
playoffs. Other winter sports such as wrestling,
basketball, and swimming have yet to get underway,
but we are ready to continue our push to the overall
championship with these events.
Right now, many of the brothers have to settle

exploration, physical training, weapons firing, and
field-training exercises. Brothers in the Ranger Chain

Platoon Leader Kandarian, Platoon Sergeant
McCann, Squad Leaders Loughery and Vogt, and
Supply Sergeant Jim Worthington. Needless to say,
FIJI is obviously a force at Washington and Lee.
\r\nGRADUATE NEWS
Carlton Peebles '84 just recently died in a small
plane crash over Tennessee. While at Washington and
Lee, Carlton served as House Manager and Treasurer
of Zeta Deuteron. He also was a four-year letterman
on the wrestling team which he captained in his
senior year.
The 1985 Fiji Islands Party will be held on
April 27 and will feature the band "Targets." All
graduate brothers are encouraged to attend for a
weekend of good times.
Zeta Deuteron was recently visited by Phi Gamma
Delta Field Secretary Mike Lucas. While in Lex
ington, Mike held meetings with the individual of
ficers of the house as well as the heads of specific
committees. The weekend visit proved to be a benefit
to both the brothers and the Field Secretary.

\r\nLETTER FROM THE EDITOR
I am sure that for many Zeta Deuteron brothers
who have graduated from Washington and Lee it was
quite a surprise to receive this newsletter. Unfor
tunately, we, the undergraduate FIJIS at W&L, have
been rather lackadaisical in areas such as the newslet
ter and therefore, graduate relations for the past
several years. Over a year ago, our chapter was vast
ly reorganized with the help of the House Corpora
tion, and it appeared that Zeta Deuteron could begin
to rebuild strong graduate ties. The house suffered a
devastating fire last spring however, and once again
the house was forced to reorganize.
Good news came this fall with the successful rush
Our major concern is contact with the graduates,
whether through a letter or even a visit. We feel that
the house can only be strong through graduate sup
port. This is why we are urging all graduate brothers
to attend our Annual Norris Pig Dinner to be held
on Alumni Weekend on May 10. There would be no
better time than this for the graduate FIJIS and the
present FIJIS to get together. The dinner will feature
Phi Gamma Delta Archon Councilor Frederick
Stines, Jr. (Iowa '49) as the guest speaker. Mr. Stines
is Senior Vice-President of the Meredith Corporation
and General Manager of Better Homes and Garden
Books and Meredith Newspapers and will be an ex
cellent addition to this year's dinner. Any brother
wishing to attend this event should write to:

our new house should be completed by January 1986.

This new house will provide us with the nicest frater

extremely strong brotherhood means great things and
a bright future for Phi Gamma Delta at Washington
and Lee.
We want the graduate brothers to be a part of
this. All graduates are encouraged to fill out the
