MESSAGE FROM
THE PRESIDENT
Purple greetings to the Graduate Brothers of Epsilon Chi!
Brothers, your Chapter is flourishing. As of December 1, 1986
we have 23 active members and 8 pledges. These are our
biggest numbers in five years! With undergraduate affairs in
good shape we are turning our efforts in the Graduate direc-
tion
Firstly, we are commemorating 15 years since colonization
by hosting our First Annual Norris Pig Dinner! The date is April
(3-5, 1987. William A. Martin Ill, Executive Director and Editor of
The Phi Gamma Delta, will visit our Chapter for the first time.
We are also attempting to bring back Drury Bagwell, past Dean
of Students and the primary reason for our colonization. It will
be a classy affair brothers, and extra special if each and every
one of you can journey back. Come and enjoy your Chapter!
Secondly, we're going to put together a Graduate Directory
to facilitate your communications. We won't be successful
unless we have completed biographies from everyone. Please
jot down info about others too, in case we don't hear from
them.
Thirdly, we are exploring the possibility of purchasing the
Chapter house. We hope to pave the way for generations to
come. We are excited and as things develop, you'll hear from
us.
That's all for now Brothers. Put aside April 3-5; it will be
memorable for all of us!
Perge!
Fraternally,

Graduate Weekend A Tremendous
Success--Thanks Goes To Brother
Randy Sparling.
Earlier this semester, | was able to attend a very enjoyable
evening at a cottage on Lake Minnetonka, Minnesota. The
accomodations were arranged by graduate brother Randy
Sparling, and the main reason for this meeting of graduate
brothers and undergrads was to discuss the establishment of
the Epsilon Chi Chapter Endowment Fund. Also discussed
were the foundations for a Graduate Chapter in the Twin Cities.
During this meeting, the undergraduates had a chance to
express their perceptions as to how the Chapter was doing at
E.C., eat some great food, and discuss Phi Gamma Delta--
young and old. Our Field Secretary Ben Robinson was there,
and he gave his very positive views to some of the graduates
as to the success Epsilon Chi has been enjoying of late. A very
special thanks goes to Randy Sparling and his wife. The
Graduates that attended were: Steve Johnson, Bob Mickelson,
Rick Koehler (Purple Legionnaire), Charles Martins, Jeff
Suedbeck, Ken Thoreson, Jim (Ragu) Galante, Kurt Tausche,
Greg and Jeff Buell, Brian Helm, Michael Ziehr, and Field
Secretary Ben Robinson.
All of the undergraduates were glad to see that many
Graduate Brothers getting together. Hopefully, we'll see all of
you at this years 15 YEAR REUNION!
Perge!
Fraternally Yours,
Paul K. Lindl '89

\r\nTREASURER’S
REPORT
Dear Graduate Brothers:
Greetings from the Treasurer's desk. | am writing this note
to you for the last time as Treasurer--we are about one week
away from elections, and | see bright prospects for our Chapter
in the future. | wish to talk to you about my tenure and also the
foreseeable future of Epsilon Chi's finances.
Since January, the Fraternity has paid over $10,000 in bills-
-$3,000 of which were left-over from the past. Our relations
with International Headquarters are at all-time high, and we
have been on time with our bills every month since January.
For the first time in a long while, every brother associated with
the Chapter is recognized by Headquarters. We are also trying
to initiate others that have left the Chapter but had their money
used for other purposes before us. | feel that although | have
been instrumental in changing attitudes with regards to paying
bills, it has been a very responsible membership that has
enabled me to carry out a successful tenure.
About the future-we have instituted the policy of paying
dues yearly rather than by semester. This will be appreciated
by my successor and by others down the line. Spring Break
Trips, our main fund raiser, have been set-up; it looks like they
will be another success story for Epsilon Chi.
In my Summer letter to you, | mentioned that we set up an
Endowment Fund for Epsilon Chi. It is now established and
controlled by myself and the Purple Legionnaire. We decided
to set it up that way so that the savings are not dipped into by
the Chapter in the future without some sort of ‘checks and
balances’. Let me refresh your memory concerning the endow-
ment fund. It is sort of a savings fund for the Chapter--$500 per
semester is deposited into this account by the Treasurer, and
it earns interest. | urge you to contribute to this fund. | assure
you that it is for the better of the Chapter. You can send your
Endowment Fund contributions to Rick Koehler-our most de-
voted Purple Legionnaire. (His address is included in this
Protagonist). Since Graduate Contributions have been minimal,
| feel this is a means of establishing a safety net for the
Chapter in the future. | do not wish any Treasurer to go through
the pains we faced in bringing the Chapter up out of a dire
situation.
Lastly, by the time of the printing of this issue of the
Protagonist, we will have started to explore the possibilities of
buying the house. | feel that everything should be finalized this
Spring. We will be setting up a House Corporation in the forth-
coming months. Keep in touch; attend this year's 15th year
Reunion on April 4, 1987.
Perge! Fraternally.

ADVISOR’S
REPORT
Dear Alumni Brothers:
| would like to take this opportunity to report my observa-
tions and perceptions of the progress being made by Epsilon
Chi Chapter in the two years since | have served as advisor to
the group. My general impressions are that the chapter has
made some significant strides for which they should be duly
recognized. Improvement has been noted by the National
Fraternity through the awarding of an Honorable Mention of the
Condon Cup and the John Templeton McCarty Efficiency
Award for chapter improvement. If you spend time at the
chapter house and talk with the brothers, you will see that the
awards are well deserved, for the emphasis upon brotherhood
has never been higher. | am especially impressed with the
brothers’ concern for fraternity spirit and for their dedication to
self-improvement. This is evident in the atmosphere in the
house, in the interactions between the brothers, in their atten-
tion to the fraternity’s ritual, and in the time they have spent
devoting attention to the physical condition of their house.
Time, effort, and money have been spent painting and fixing up
the facility, in addition to the recent construction and dedication
of a new furnished chapter room.
A responsible cabinet, led by Brian Bowen as President, Afif
Sakir as Treasurer, Jason Pleus as Recording Secretary, Willy
Porter, Corresponding Secretary and Steve Haunschild, His-
torian has placed a strong emphasis upon long-range planning,
sound fiscal management, service to the community, and del-
egation of work through the committee process. Through their
efforts, the chapter debt outstanding for several years has
been entirely eliminated, and more brothers are involved
through the committee process in fund raising, community
service, social activities, and placing renewed emphasis on thea™,
ritual.
A recent milestone has been the establishment of an en-
dowment fund for the purpose of raising money for the event-
ual purchase of the fraternity house. This endowment fund is
carefully controlled and under the watchful leadership of the
president, the treasurer, and the recording secretary. The
money for the endowment fund is being solicited from present
undergraduate brothers in the form of chapter dues, and will be
invested in interest-bearing certificates until sufficient dollars
have accumulated for a down payment.
In all, it is my firm belief that the chapter now shows better
organization, stronger leadership, a greater dedication to the
fraternity and to the community, and most especially a
heightened sense of responsibility, than it has for a long while.
You really should see it to believe it.

EPSILON CHI RAISES FUNDS FOR
COMPUTER PURCHASE
At the time this Protagonist went to the printer, many of you
had already received a letter from our illustrious brother in
Washington--namely, John L. Frank. Well, thanks to all of your
efforts, our dream of a computer will become a reality this
Spring! A very special thanks goes out to all of you who.
donated money, and also to brother John for providing his
time and much-valued help. All said and done we raised in
excess of $300.00 dollars for the purchase. Again, THANKS
TO ALL OF YOU!

\r\nHOMECOMING ’86 A SUCCESS
A little extra planning went into the working of this year's
homecoming. Being on somewhat shaky ground with the ad-
«™> ministration this year made the brothers strive harder at coming
out of this homecoming week looking good. And that we did!
Great participation and enthusiasm put Phi Gamma Delta
above the rest of the competition. During the week's activities,
the FlJI house was represented in all but one of the competi-
tions doing especially well in the Tug-of-War where we went
down to the finals. John “KRASH" Kranich put the FlJl name
into the homecoming court by making the final five candidates.
Willy Porter did an excellent job representing FlJI at the Varsity
Show by putting on a fabulous performance playing guitar,
culminating the act by putting on his FlJI hat, and taking a bow
to thunderous applause. Phi Gamma Delta showed its bright
colors at the end of the week by running the traditional Football
Run for the charity of Spina Bifida. A little extra punch was
added by being on the evening news the same night showing
us running the football. Then the graduate brothers started to
roll in. One by one they came to the house, with rave reviews
of how great it looked. A great showing of graduate brothers in
conjunction with the newly active brothers made it a very
special weekend with many stories to tell. Overall, the weekend
was a huge success and set a great precedent for upcoming
activities this year. FlJl Forever!

THE BAR NOTHING REPORT
Greetings from the Bar Nothing Ranch, just South of beauti-
ful downtown Jim Falls! It's been some time since | have had
the pleasure and privilege of communicating with many of the
graduate brothers. However, in other cases, such as Dave
Sohns, Scott Murlowski, Monte Tralmer and Bob Tilden, the
lines of communication have remained open and fluid, like so
much Leinenkugels.
| had the distinct honor of participating in a “line-up” the
other night at the house. It was well organized, well run, and all
in all a class act. A round of clicks to the under graduate
brothers! Furthermore, the house was immaculate, the brothers
were well mannered and receptive; | could not help but get the
feeling that the future is very bright for Epsilon Chi.
Many or all of you have received a letter from John Frank,
and by the way, thank you John. In this letter a solicitation for
donations was made, and | would like to further champion the
cause. You can rest assured that the funds will be channeled
in the right direction. Seriously, send out a ten spot or a twenty!
And while you're at it send Murl a couple of bucks for diapers,
he’s trying to buy out Kimberly Clark! So long for now...see you
all at Norris Pig Roast this Srping!

weekend of April 3-5! We have made arrangements to ensure
that this event will be a smashing success. You will be receiv-
ing an invitation in the near future including the weekend's

(continued page 4)
\r\n(continued from page 3)
As you may have noticed, this issue of the ‘Purple
Protagonist’ does not contain a great deal of graduate news.
Due to problems with our past mailings, and the fact that many
of our inserts were not returned, we have had trouble soliciting
information from all of you. | want to change this situation. We
have plans to put together a Graduate Directory, but we need
your help in filling out the insert questionaire and returning it to
Epsilon Chi. The sooner you help us in this way, the sooner we
can help you. Please pay specific attention to the section
asking for information about other graduates in your area. By
supplying us with names and addresses of the brothers in your
area, you will be helping to insure that our records are up to
date, and therefore improving our Graduate Relations Pro-
gram. Obviously, our Graduate Relations Program is our obli-
gation to you. However, it takes the effort of all of us to make
it work! Our goal is to have the next Protagonist comprised of
over 70% graduate news.
Perge! Stay Purple!
