Chi lipsilon began the 1973-74 year bouyed by the eager
ness of the sophonjores, initiated the previous spring, and
steadied by the experience and vvisdom of the upperclassflien.
The synergistic combination of these forces created a suc
cessful year culminated in spirit by the Atlanta IShklesia,
We increased our membership by six v/ith the Autumn
pledge class and by ten more with the Spring initiateso
Highlights of the rush and pledge programs were the Spa
ghetti Dinner in November and the Retreat in Ivlay,
The pledges joined the brothers in chapter social
service project?. We stood at street corners collecting
money for the Cnicago-area Diabetes Tag Day in October and
for the Children's Tag Day in April. The spring effort
benefited the
Hyde Park - Kenwood Neighborhood
Club. On an individual basis, brothers were encouraged to
give blood and to tutor neighborhood children.
V/ork sessions introduced the pledges to cleaning and
maintaining the house and yard. Brothers undertook projects
like painting shov^er stalls, building screens, and install
ing a doorbell.
Bprucing-up the house generally was the prelude to a
party. jfedyMild dmall, informal parties were a consistent
item on the social schedule. Autumn quarter we had a^Targe
holiday party v/hich many graduate brothers attended. The

i^ache, Winter quart^ir, featured skits by the pledges, seniors,
and cabinet, and a song praising our Housemother, I'trs. Hattie
ivorris. In addition to the Fiji Island party,Spring quarter,
was marked by co-ed softball games and a camping and climb
ing trip to Devil's Ltke.
iviore mundane entertainment and Edification was provided
by beer and singing fusions of varying spontaneity and
expeditions to downtovm Chicago pizza purveyors. Two Friday
traditions were honored throughout the year. Before dinner
cocktails continued to attract area and distant graduate
brothers, vie invited distinguished faculty and local lumin
aries to dinner again last year. Philip Kurland, a consti
tutional lawyer, and sometime advisor to Sen. Sam iSrvin,
spoke on a variety of political topics including the DePunis
case. Other memorable discussions were led by laark Krug and
Joseph Cropsey.
We exercised our bodies on the playing fields of Chicago,
Ivlany brothers received varsity letters, often for more than
one sport. The chapter fielded teams in most of the intra
mural events. V/e were in fourth place among all College
housing units for the Undergraduate standings, besting our
nearest fraternity competitor by ten places.
Not often seen in cold records was a spirit in the
chapter that fraternity is a desirable, viable concept on
a campus which is not oriented toward it. Our effort to
make it work is evident in our honorable mentions for the
