Burren Offers Door for House
Barry Michael Burren, '69, has opened the door this year
on improvments to the chapter house.
Brother Burren
Burren's offer of the door is only a part of his extensive
service to the chapter. He was the chapter's house manager
has offered to replace the house's old front door.
Carpenters have been consulted about the door, which has
clearly been used a great deal. The varnish is almost
completely gone from it and the wood has suffered from
his sophmore and junior years. The experience taught him
how important and difficult maintaining the house is. In
1969, as the treasurer, he helped to steer the chapter
through its split over the policies of International. Because
exposure to the elements and to the entrances and exits of
countless Phi Gams and their friends.
Burren and his classmates worked hard to keep the chapter
together, many other men have become Gamma Deuteron

Sports Editor of Student
Keith Belzer, '85, is this year's sports editor for the Knox
Student.
Keith's influence has made a substantial improvement in
the Student's sports department in the three issues which
have been published this year. In fact, Keith has virtually
created the department which last year relied solely on
articles written by the writers in the College's Public
Relations Office.
Keith is a theatre major and was one of the leads in last
year's production of Edward Albee's "Seascape" in
Harbach Theatre. This term he is one of the

was also a member of the College's Board of Public
Relations and its Young Republicans.
At Knox, Burren participated in I.M. sports. He has
continued his involvement in athletic activity by jogging
five mornings a week. He is also on a championship bowling
team and has a .526 batting average on his softball team.
Burren graduated from Knox in 1969 and attended North
western University. He received his degree from Northwestern's Dental School and has been a general dentist
since. He has a private practice in Elgin, IL.
Burren is on the Board of Directors of Elgin's Kiwanis
and its dental council. He is also a director of his local
YMCA.
While Burren is uncertain whether he'll be back for

the new door.
Wolfington
New Legionnaire
Jim Wolfington, '82, has been selected Gamma Deuteron's new Purple Legionnaire. Jim replaced Brian Cox,
'79, this fall term.
Making structural improvements in the house is Jim's
major goal for this year. His intended efforts will focus, as
will those of the undergraduates, on repairs to the roof.
Jim further hopes to improve the chapter's scholastic
performance and its relations with our Graduate Brothers.
Jim brings to the position of Purple Legionnaire a great
deal of experience in dealing through the appropriate
channels to achieve specific goals. As a member of Knox's
Honor Board, he helped to maximize the system's potential
for academic integrity. As the
secretary, he
made great improvements in the system used to correspond
with the chapter's Graduates.
Jim is working for the Bank of Galesburg as a trainee in
its bank services marketing division.
Jim Wolfington, Purple Legionnaire for Gamma Deuteron,
with the honor that symbolizes his qualifications for his new
position.

A Letter from the President
Dear Brothers:
It was with great expectations that the Gamma Deuteron
Chapter of Phi Gamma Delta opened her doors to the
returning underclassmen. A new shower on the third floor
suprised everyone! Now the house has two new showers,
and no more leaks. We hope and expect to have no more
leaks for years to come.
Another area that excited many of the underclassmen
was the new change in the rush system at Knox. The rush
period is now six weeks instead of the regular 10. We hope
this will be beneficial to our rushing tactics. Being 26
strong, we hope to have another outstanding rush this year.
Homecoming, as you all know, is Oct. 23-24. We hope to
see you all here at the house. We hope that you will be proud
to see how the house looks. We have started to put much
Treasurer's Notes
Dear Brothers:
As a new school year begins we find the chapter with
several obstacles that we undergraduates must hurdle.
One hurdle has already been conquered. That is the one
pertaining to the leaking showers. Both the second and the
third floor showers have been replaced with strong, wellworking fiberglass showers.
As of this date both the chapter and the house corporation
are anxiously awaiting a report that has been prepared bya
local contracting company. This report should deal with
what will have to be done to meet the demanding fire codes.
From the records that are avaiable to me, it seems that
no fire code updating has been done in the last ten years. As
of now, our fire prevention system is quite archaic. This
surely is not safe for the members
who now live

more effort into trying to keep the house in good shape;
however, with the house being as old as it is this effort
seems like a never-ending battle. In fact, the largest part of
the 1982-1983 budget is designated for house repairs and
replacements.
Another date that we hope you will reserve is April 2, 1983.
This is the tenitive date for our NORRIS PIG DINNER. We
hope that this pig dinner will
be the best one you have
attended; however, to make this pig dinner a success we
need your attendance. Please let us know if you can attend.
It is very important that we hear from you as soon as
possible so that the proper arrangements can be made.
Finally, we hope to establish a better rapport between the
chapter and graduate brothers. Any input you have on this
matter would be greatly appreciated.
Perge!
we are 26 strong, and almost all of the 26 work very hard
for the chapter. We hope that we will be able to plan a few
help weekends during the Fall term to do some serious work
on the house.
The financial situation of the house is sound. With the
excellent budgetary policies of my predecessor, the house is
able to function without any severe handicaps.
However, in the next few years I expect that some sort of
large scale fundraising drive will need to be conducted. I
forsee this for two reasons — the upgrading of fire codes is
going to be very expensive and the amount of structural
work that will have to be done is quite large.
I have, unfortunately, not yet prepared the budget for the
1982-83 academic year. If I had, I would be able to share
some of it with you now. I have, however, planned to spend
a great deal of money on the major areas that I think we
Another section of the report should deal with how we will
need to concentrate on this year. One area is graduate
prevent further inward sagging of the house. It seems that
relations and the other area is house improvements. I hope
there are three rafters that are cracking in the livingroom
ceiling.
But enough of that somewhat bad news. The good news is

that this money was spent wisely and effectively.
