UNM ALUMNI DEVELOP RISK MANGEMENT POLICY
Recently, Dean Gary Golden and a
group of UNM fraternity advisors
met to discuss the ongoing alcohol
problems arising throughout the
nation. Through their efforts, a risk
management policy was developed
for the fraternity system at UNM.
The policy is closely followed by a
Phi Gamma Delta risk management
policy. The UNM policy is thought

the
New
Mexico
Legislature enacted a mandatory
seat belt law. As a result. Safer New
Mexico Now, a non-profit
organization formed in order to
inform the public of the advantages
of using their seat belts.
Each year, SNMN and KOAT-TV
sponsor a "Be My Valentine For LifeBuckle Up" program for kindergarten
through second grade students. The
program is designed to encourage
students to pledge their parents and
siblings to use their seat belts. The
cost of mailing these packets is
nearly $3000.00. This was a problem
for an organization with a very low
budget and a office that consisted of
two people. Alpha Nu approached
SNMN in 1988 to offer our services.
We have since hand delivered
packets to
the schools in
Albuquerque area.

Alpha Nu Hosts 1989 Section Convention
Albuquerque was the sight of 1989
Section XXXI Convention Jan 27-29 at
which 10 Alpha Nu brothers were

Ultimate Champions
Five Straight Years
Phi Gamma Delta is currently
fourth among fraternities in
intramural competition. In April we
will be defending our 1988 softball
title and just finished regular season
basketball competition undefeated.
And Fiji recently chalked up their
fifth straight ultimate frisbee title.
This edition of The Alpha News is
being dedicated to brother Benjamin
Robinson, Director of Programs at
International Headquarters, for

Old Fiji House Is Center of Centennial
The University of New Mexico is
observing its Centennial during the
1988-89 academic year.
The
Centennial is a birthday party on a
grand scale - and much more. It is a
celebration of our University's past
achievements, an affirmation of our
current strenghts and, most
important, an investment in our

by a large scale fundraising
campaign. Its goals will be to attract

faculty and staff, to enrich programs

campus, for UNM's second century.
Centennial
activities
will
spotlight the best of UNM: lectures,

and publications. There is at least
one event for every hundred years of
UNM's history. The actual onehundredth birthday celebration was
celebrated during the days
surrounding February 28, 1989, and
centennial
point for all this
celebration
is
the
Centennial Center, a restored adobe
on the northwest comer of the main
campus, which happens to be the
first Alpha Nu chapter house.
Chapter history states that on
January 3, 1966, the purchase of a
faculty residence on campus for
$22,500 was unanimously approved.
With graduate backing, it was
arranged to finance the entire
purchase price. It was determined
that only six men would be able to
