Archon President Richard D. McCormick(ISU '61) was
the featured speaker at a banquet to discuss the proposal
of a graduate chapter in the central Iowa area. The pro

Larry Vanderpool (ISU '69), Jim Hildebrand (ISU '74)
and Dick Davidson (ISU '76).

the condition of their respective chapters, rush and other
pertinent issues.
"Our first goal is to meet," Section Chief Jerry Wanek

undergraduate chapters. I think that an active graduate
chapter will be very beneficial to the undergraduates."

Pig Dinner
We hope you enjoyed the latest issue of the Brainstorm.
We have some definite goals for future Brainstorms ,and
we would like your help in achieving them. For starters,
we have planned on writing four quality publications and
sending out two issues per semester.
Our other goal is to keep all of you informed on where
the house is going and on those things which you, as grad
uates, are involved.
by Scott Wuggazer '91
Tradition. Phi Gamma Delta has prided itself on tra
dition for one hundred forty-two years. Pig Dinner is one
of those traditions. In 1893, at the University of Califor
nia at Berkley, the first Norris Pig Dinner occured. Many
may have forgotten the story on how Pig Dinner came
about, but none have forgotten Pig Dinner itself!
Last spring, the 82nd Norris Pig Dinner was attended
by 78 graduate brothers. Special thanks to Matt Alexan
der '79,the Toastmaster, and to Jerald Schnoor '72, guest
speaker. Jerald gave a powerful speech on goals, dreams,
and most of all, being a FIJI.
Clare Forrester '26 is beginning his own tradition. He
once again was the one to kiss the snout of the pig as a
We feel these goals are very realistic and obtainable.
However, we need your help. The September issue of the
Brainstorm had a questionaire card enclosed. We had
only a handful of them returned. We would like to thank
those that took the time to send them back. In order for us
to achieve our goals, we need more responses.
Next semester, we are working on publishing a
Brainstorm that will feature all of the decades the
Alpha Iota chapter has been in existence. In order for us
to make this happen, we need your photographs and
stories. If you are able to contribute, please send us a
letter so we can get in touch with you.
We hope you enjoy the next three Brainstorms!

Section Chief
by Brian Heintz '91
Alpha Iota, Lambda Nu and Mu Deuteron have a new
and innovative leader for Section 24. Jerry Wanek(Iowa
'80) replaced Dick Davidson (ISU '76) as section chief in
June,1989.
"1 was approached by Fred Stines(Iowa '49) to see if I
would have some interest in that position (of section
chief)," Wanek said. "I feel that my experiences in the
chapter allow me to understand what makes a chapter
work well verses what doesn't work well."
Brother Wanek joined the Mu Duteron chapter in 1976
and was elected president as a sophomore. During his
presidency,Iowa hosted a Pig Dirmer that over 200 grad

'We had a large budget surplus that created a big

It became obvious to Wanek that there was a void in
all of the international awards. There needed to be an
award given to a graduate brother who didn't have an of
ficial f)osition with the fraternity but still displayed a
lot of service to an undergraduate chapter.
"One of them(fund raisers)is some engraved bricks on
the sidewalk," Wanek said. "It has been very successful
for us and as a result of that project, the corporation has
paid off all of its debt. Now it has quite a bit in the
bank."
Jerry has several goals for the chapters in his section.
He wants them to consistently win the McCarty Profi
ciency Award, the scholarship award (being above the
all mens average g.p.a.) and to have each chapter in con
tention for a major award.
The new section chief feels that the main strength of
Alpha lota is its close-knit unified chapter. He also says
that we are a very honorable chapter with regards to
compljing to rules and laws about hazing and alcohol.
"You are a very good chapter that does what it is sup
posed to do and follows the rules," Wanek said. "Your
primary weakness is that you fail to plan long term. Your
membership is having trouble seeing beyond its own un
dergraduate term."
Wanek went to law school at Drake. He is currently a
partner in the firm of Garten and Wanek in Des Moines.
Jerry and his wife, Caroline, have two children, Joseph,
Larry Vanderpool (ISU '68) with the Coulter Cup
age 4, and Christopher, age 2.

I would like to share with you some of the progress
that has been made at 325 Ash. The active chapter has
