A message from the President
Dear Graduate Brothers,
I am proud to report that Phi Chapter is continuing its
Quest for Excellence. At last summer's Fiji Academy,Phi
received honorable mention for the Jordan Bowl and its 16th
straight academic excellence award for surpassing the allmen's average. With the 1990 Ekklesia to be held in
Chicago, the brothers are excited to become immersed in the
inner workings of the fraternity.
I was excited to interact with some graduates at this
to have this decision reptealed, but the future doesn't look
promising. Phi Chapter needs your support, and we urge you
to make your opinion known to the university administration.
Secondly, due to increasing liability related to alcohol.
Phi Gamma Deltajoined the Fratemity Insurance Purchasing
Group. Among many subsequent restrictions on alcohol, our
fratemity is forced to adopt"BYOB"parties. Despite the fact
that this is rather unsettling news.Phi Chapter presses on in
an effort to implement these new restrictions with other
year's Homecoming. Our graduate brothers had a chance to

see some of the aesthetic improvements we've made to the
chapter house, but there are still many general inprovements
needed to keep Fiji's housing competitive.
AsPhi Chapterenters the nineties,we arefaced with two
major dilemmas. After a year-long task force report on life
I hope to see you all at the Pig Dinner in May, if not
sooner, and again I remind you that you are always welcome
to stop by the chapter house. I am sure you will find that Phi

recommendation of a Task Force subcommittee on Greek
issues, has led to considerable anger among Greeks at
Northwestem. While sororities initially joined in the fight by
helping organize a protest float in the Homecoming Parade,
they subsequently accepted the university's guidelines.
Phi Gamma Delta and the Interfratemity Council,
however, continue to oppose this unfair, unilateral decision.
Our argumentagainst deferred msh is twofold. First,it would
impinge on the rights of freshmen to join any campus
organization they sochoose and would restrict their interaction
with upperclassmen. Secondly,it could have seriousfinancial
consequences on our chapter and the entire Greek system
because freshmen would not pay dues or board costs until the
winter.
The university is offering a one-time stipend to help
defray the lost revenue next fall, but it is merely a token
amount that will not significantly improve our situation.
Northwestem undergraduates continue to fight the
decision to impose deferred msh,but our complaints seem to
be falling on deafears. Therefore,we are asking our graduates
to inform the administration thatthey find this decision unfair
and unworkable. We encourage you to write to:

Fijis dance to find
cure for leukemia
On the weekend of February 2-4, 1990, Northwestern
held its 16th annual Dance Marathon, and Phi Chapter
brothers played significant roles in the event. For the second
consecutive year, the Leukemia Society of America was the
beneficiary of one of the nation's largest college
philanthropies.
The focus ofthe event was 82couples pounding the floor
for a grueling 30 straight hours. Numerous live bands and a
foot-stomping square dance kept the dancers' spirit and feet
alive throughout the weekend.Representing Fiji on the dance

floor were David Vockell '89 and Paul "Scooter" Ejzak

Phi Chapter also made its presence known through its
participation on the administrative side. Scott Miller'91 and
Jon Gordon'92headed the publicity and casino committees,
respectively. Mick Bulakowski '91, Chuck Carey '92,
Tony Crane '93, Mark Dooley '90, Mike McConnel!'90,
Clinton Nosse!'92,Hunter Smith'90 and Gary Sutkin'91
all donated their time to other aspiects of the event.
Students came to Norris University Center to gamble at
the casino, play bingo and watch the dancers. They also came
to see supermodel Cindy Crawford,a former NU student, and
Chicago Bears quarterback Mike Tomczak kick off the
Marathon on Friday night. Crawford was on hand Saturday
to sell and autograph her swimsuit calendar.
In all.Northwestern raised over$80,000for the Leukemia
Society. Fiji ranked in the top ten fraternities by raising
almost$1,200. Dance Marathon proved to be an exhilarating
weekend in a sometimes all-too-dreary February.

Halloween party
Phi Chapter continued a tradition this past fall by hosting
its third annual Halloween party for the children ofthe Better
Boys Foundation,an afterschool program for underprivileged
children in Chicago.
The party, which was also hosted by Phi Gamma Delta's
sister sorority.Kappa Alpha Theta, took place atthe fraternity
house. Several brothers had specific themes in their rooms to
entertain and sometimes frighten the children. Among the
favorites were the infamous Dead Coffin Lady, the Crazy
Axe Murderer and eyeball-sucking monsters. As well as
scary creatures, fraternity and sorority members painted
children's faces and helped them bob for apples.
Due to the dangers of traditional trick-or-treating on the
streets, many ofthe children's only festivities were at the FUI
house. But according to Willie Sanders, supervisor of the
Better Boys Foundation, the kids don't miss the practice of
knocking on doors and asking for candy.
"The kids get so excited and look forward to this party
every year," he said.
Because of the good times shared by all at this year's
bash.Phi Chapter is looking forward to sponsoring the event
again next year.
