plan to increase the involvement of the
Board of Chapter Advisors (BCA). One
graduate was to be placed in an

chapter's thirteen committees. Because
of YOUR interest and support, this goal
was completed in one quarter. This
development can only lead to more
continuity in our committees’ goals and
end the process of “reinventing the
wheel” every year.
The most immediate results of this
kind of graduate involvement can be

improvement of the Golden Eagle Fijr.-
With this type of help on every chapter
committee, we shall improve and
remain strong in all areas.
Also, a large thank-you to all those
who took the time to come back to Pig
Dinner. Undergrads and graduates alike
judged it one of the best ever.
Now, news from the chapter.
Spring Quarter: Our intramural
sports effort peaked in the spring as we
captured the IFC softball and golf
championships. This boosted Phi Gam
from 7th to 3rd in a close race for the
All-Sports Trophy. We also won the
“Fraternity of the Year” plaque for the
second time in the four years of the
award. Because Fiji Island was after
these events, our annual spring party
was a time of celebration as well as fun
and relaxation.
Summer: The highlight of the
summer, by far, was Fiji Academy. Theta
Tau (which sent ten delegates to the
convention) garnished these awards:
° Coon Plaque - Best Chapter

* Coulter Cup Runner-Up -
Outstanding Graduate Service to the
Chapter (David Olive '85)

* 3rd Year Proficiency Award (out of a

‘and were miornnraive ano emgnrening. ~
The most fun we had during Academy,
however, was going out-on-the-town
with other Brothers from our section.
Even though our respective schools
and chapters are different, it was great
to discover how much we, as brothers,
had in common.
Fall Quarter: The Fall has begun
with the second annual graduate
workday, and projects completed
include a revitalization of the TV room
and the upstairs bathroom. This
graduate activity has been a great help
to the chapter the past two years as we
have prepared for Fall Rush.
Speaking of Fall Rush, it will be over
when you receive this letter, but | can
tell you that we are more prepared than
ever for Rush Week. Our rush brochure
was received by all male freshmen
(1,000 were sent) and we have already
had twenty reply cards returned.
Homecoming: We are hoping that
the success of Pig Dinner will carry
over to Homecoming this Fall. Of
course, the success of Homecoming
depends on the graduate support; that's
what made Pig Dinner great. | invite you
to come back to Theta Tau whenever
you can to see the chapter's new
library, to see the Coon Plaque, and to
relive the brotherhood that binds us all.
Fraternally,

\r\nTFI Finalizes Plans
On July 18, the Board of Directors of TFI met in Cookeville
and finalized house improvements for the fall. These
improvements and renovations were carried out at Graduate
Work Weekend on August 29-30, and during the Chapter’s
Work Week September 8-11, prior to dorms opening.
The major change made in the house was the conversion
of the downstairs bedroom into a Library/Office. The primary
focus of the room will be on Chapter scholarship, but it will
also be used as an office and conference room. Also there
will be a bed for the Field Secretary, Section Chief, or
Graduate Brothers. The room will also provide greater
security for important Chapter archives.
Other improvements include new furniture for the TV
room; complete redecorating of the upstairs hall and
bathroom; adding a door between the trophy room and the
hallway, and adding locks to the doors for security;
completely new locks for all doors and windows; and new
wallpaper for the trophy room.
Thanks to all those who have made pledges for the 87-88
year. So far our total pledges have reached $2,000 — from
only 16 grads. Where are you other 90? Remember part of
the money goes to help pay for the Golden Eagle Fiji.
Contact Randy Wilmore if you would like to make a donation.
Board of Chapter Advisers
The 1987-88 Board of Chapter Advisers, with the
committees they will advise, is as follows:
Todd Arrants = — Rush
Russ Bradley — Finance
John Brummett — Publications
Hal Balthrop © — Campus Activities
Kerwin Fulton +— Service, Quality of Life
Martin Hunt — Scholarship
Mike MacIndoe — Public Relations, Social
David Olive — Pledge Education
Randy Wilmore — Graduate Relations
The BCA met on the weekend of August 29, during
Graduate Work Weekend to organize for the coming year.
The advisers are currently communicating with their
respective chairman to plan activities and programs for
winter and spring 1988. Any ideas you have in relation to a
specific area should be forwarded directly to that
committee’s adviser.
Coon Plaque:
Chapter Wins Award
The Fiji Academy at Ohio State University, August 2-6,
was a great success as always. A new feature this year was
the first Graduate Leadership Institute, a day long workshop
for Section Chiefs, PLs, BCAs, and House Corp. officers.
The featured speaker for the Model Norris Pig Dinner was
Joseph R. “Bob” Kerrey (Nebraska '65), former Governor of
Nebraska.
The Archons have adopted a law which prohibits the use
of the “Fiji Man” in connection with the Fraternity. Recently
one of our northern chapters received weeks of negative
publicity from the major television stations and newspapers
across their state and across the nation because they used
the Fiji Man on publicity for Fiji Island. The Theta Tau
Chapter had already taken steps last year to limit the use of
the emblem, and will now completely ban its use. Keeping
the “Fiji Man” is not worth the continued offense it causes
some Polynesians, Orientals, and Blacks — including some
of our Brothers.
The 1988 Ekklesia will be held in Denver, August 10-14.
Remember wives and children can attend and will have
special activities planned for them during the business
sessions. The Host Committee will also be lining up special
vacation packages for those who wish to come a few days
early or stay a few days late. Any of you who have been to
an Ekklesia know it will be worth the trip. Throw in the
Rockies — and it’s a chance you just can’t miss.

\r\nCover Story: PIG DINNER DIARY
Friday, May 1
Noon
I've taken off work early to go home and
get ready for the weekend in Cookeville.
Do | really even want to go? | wonder
how many people | will even know. The
last time | was at the Chapter house
was Pig Dinner two years ago. And that
was before they got the new house. |
don’t know .. . | told Randy and David |
would be there. And | would love to see
Hal, and Rex. And of course Jeff and
Dan and Tim. Gosh, it's been a long
time since I've talked to some of those
guys. Man, the good times we used to
have . .. | remember when Todd and
Carter...
6:00 p.m.
“Tennessee Tech University, Burgess
Falls Road, Next Exit.” | can remember
when that sign used to signal that | was
almost “home.” Home .. . Home for
almost five years of my life. Five very
good years.
7:30 p.m,
Okay, the new house is on Peachtree
and one block over from Kappa Sig. |
wonder if they still have those
Halloween water balloon fights? There
itis. Looks pretty nice. Definitely bigger
than 421 North Walnut. Well, lets go
inside.
11:00 p.m.
Man | can't believe I’ve been here over
three hours. And | don’t think I've
stopped running my mouth yet. Hal and
Macindoe haven't changed a bit. Well,
slightly calmer, but still a blast. Of
course, Lee’s here keeping the
undergrads on their best behavior. The
Chapter is really organized. A
registration table, grad directory
information for us to correct, a
registration packet which has the
weekend schedule, an update on the
Chapter, and a report from Tech Fijis
Inc. Impressive.
Saturday, May 2
9:30 a.m.
Time to tee off at the Country Club. |
think they said we have 36 brothers
playing in the annual Pig Dinner
Scramble. | just hope Martin doesn’t
decide to play bump cars with his cart.
The day is absolutely beautiful. | met
Phil Wallace ’88, Pig Dinner Chairman.
He's got a fantastic show underway.
Good job Phil.
3:00 p.m.
Back to the house. | like this volleyball
court idea. | can’t believe all the grads |
haven't seen since graduation.
Jonathan is here. And Robbie is still
one of the nicest guys around. And now
he owns a BMW. Drew Sowell is here.
And Daniel Ray. Kermick. Hamrick. The
Depot Alumni. Wilmore. Carl Martin.
And he's been on time for everything.
4:00 p.m.
Annual meeting of Tech Fijis Inc.
Seems like they have the house
finances under control. Randy's fund
raising drive is very ambitious. But then
Randy's ideas always are. And they
always succeed. | need to remember to
make my pledge to help support the
various programs of the Chapter —
scholarships, rush, newsletter, house
purchase fund.
5:45 p.m.
Dinner at the Holidome. Is this place
really in Cookeville? | like the way they
have assigned tables with placecards.
Four grads and four undergrads at each
table.
6:00 p.m.
Look at all the grads who have shown
up since golf. Ken Lynn and Kell. And,
you've got to be kidding, Matt Graves.
And Rex. And Joel and DO. And | am
really enjoying talking to the
undergrads. These men are very
impressive.
6:15 p.m.
Jonathan's reading of a letter from
Corey really meant a great deal. Corey
hasn’t been back to the Chapter in
years and yet he took the time to write
and say how much Phi Gamma Delta
meant to him.
7:00 p.m.
Dinner was well worth the money with
the “all you can eat” buffet. Now on to
the program...
You mean they still give the snake
award? And this new “Most abused by
a KD” Award is fantastic. They could
start a Hall of Fame for all the Brothers
who should have won that award.
Bill Scott gives a report on the state
of the Chapter. Randy outlines the fund
raising program for the next year and
hands out the pledge cards. And now
awards...
Hal Balthrop ’84 receives the Jack Lepp
award. To the left of the podium is
Archon Secretary Peter Clauss.

Peter Clauss, Archon Secretary, is the
featured speaker. Very impressive
credentials. A Philadelphia lawyer. And
the message he brings about
International is very important. | hope
the undergrads are listening to the
thoughts and ideas he is conveying. But
I'm finding it hard for me to listen . . .
looking around at old friends . . . at
young men who have replaced us...
carrying on the Theta Tau Phi Gam
tradition.
Soon-to-be graduate (Fall ’87) Allen
Ward enjoys the company of Sweetheart
Michelle Boswell.
9:00 p.m.
Dinner is over. Some of the grads are
on their way out of Cookeville. We say
goodbye and shake hands and say next
time we can’t wait so long to get
together again. | hate to say goodbye.
10:00 p.m.
The house is packed for the after dinner
party. And some grads have finally
arrived. Kerwin and Brummett. And
even Jane McMaster is here. I've been
hearing stories from the undergrads that
sound just like stories from my years
here. All Sing . . . the Depot is still
around ... games against the E’s and
Phi Delts . . . being in control of the ASB
... Sororities getting mad because we
are too secretive .. . long card games.
Sunday, May 3
3:00 p.m.
Today the sun is still shining. We had a
nice Brothers only get together at the
house this morning. And we’ve been
playing volleyball since lunch. People
are slowly beginning to leave. They say
goodbye and then hang on to talk for
just a few minutes more...
A Fldl FANTASTIC weekend. And
things seem so much the same. Yes,
there are new names and faces. But
they have the same goals, the same
ideals. The same personalities . .. No,
the house is not the same physical
structure. But | haven't really noticed.
Because the voices and the laughter
and the smiles are still the same. | can
see myself dancing in the front room

with the floor shaking in the old house
just as clearly as if it were happening
now.
I'm not sure what's amazed me more.
That old friends are still the same. Or
that the new ones I've made this
weekend are so much like us . . . | will
make the effort to come back often . . .
even when my graduate friends are not
here .. . because it’s nice to remember.
It's nice to come back. To see how
much | learned during college. To see
how far I've come. And even more
importantly, to remember where | came
from . .. Learning to work with others
that | did not always agree with, or
sometimes thought I didn’t even like.
Completing a project that | never
thought | would finish on time. And
having friends who helped me get
through it. Learning to trust and open
myself up to others who were really just
as scared about life as | was ...
Well, almost home. And I’m glad. |
don’t think | would want to be back in
college again .. . But .. . well, it’s
something | need to do very often. . .
Homecoming and Pig Dinner at least...
because those friends | shared those
college years with mean too much to
me to leave them out of my life...
Thanks to all those at Pig Dinner . . .
Grads and undergrads . . . who showed
me that Phi Gamma Delta is really not
for college days alone...

Kerri and Drew Sowell informed us at Pig Dinner that they October 10 Parents’ Day
