SPRING RUSH '87
Spring rush was a success for Xi Deuteron. The two rush
chairmen, Pete Gingras and Pete Moritz really came through in
organizing and motivating the chapter. Though the rush period
was only two weeks long, they still managed to plan and carry

The opener was a Wake Party for our home-town Brown's
valiant effort to win a berth in the Superbowl. The encore to this
fine event was the bi-annual Casino Night. The Rushees proved
to be excellent gamblers and won most of the prizes.
Our cook, John Denson, was invaluable during rush. He kept
the mouths of the rushees watering with his delicious roast beef
and others entrees at Tuesday and Thursday dinners. He also
' displayed his culinary genius at the bid dinner with his succulent
chicken cordon bleu.
We acquired seven outstanding pledges from this rush. As a
chapter we are eagerly looking forward to their joining us in
brotherhood.

Though Fijis have long been recognized as campus leaders
among the fraternities at CWRU, three Phi Gamms, all ofwhom
are of the Fall '84 pledge class, have made it official. They were
recently elected and sworn to three offices in the IFC. The IFC is
the governing body of the fraternity system, and, as such, re
quires strong leaders to successfully fulfill the responsibilities of
this body. Apparently, the fraternity system felt that Fijis were the
men for the job.

Brother Joseph Meliott was selected for the position of Social

Chairman. His duties are to assess the social life of the fraternities
and to organize and oversee Creek Week.
Finally, Brother Richard Kolacinski was chosen to serve in the
role of IPG President. His main obligations in this post include
running IPG meetings, supervising the work of the other officers,
and serving as liason between administration and the Greek
system, as well as between other faculty and student organiza
tions and the Greek system.
Some exciting goals have been set by these men, and it pro
mises to be an interesting year for the IPG.
Brother Girard D. Bond (OSU '22) passed away on January 16,
1987 while vacationing in Florida. Brother Bond was always an
active member of the graduate chapter, attending nearly every
function when in town. He was always present at the noon GAG
luncheons. He was our representative at many Ekklesias and was
a long-time member of the Phi Gamma Delta Educational Foun
dation. A memorial fund has been set up in Brother Bond's
memory, and contributions should be sent directly to the Educa
tional Foundation. This fund will be used to award scholarships in
his name to deserving undergraduate students. We've lost a great
Fiji, and he will be sorely missed.

This semester's graduate relations program has already jumped
off to a good start and we hope to surpass last semester's suc

renewal of the Greek Float Competition for next years
The actual dates for the events listed below will be announced

JOHN DENSON'S 25TH ANNIVERSARY
This is the twenty-fifth year that John Denson has been the
cook for Xi Deuteron. Through these years, John has provided
savory food for the chapter's regular meals, and has also impress
ed the guests of the chapter with his expertise at special house
functions. He is highly esteemed by the faculty of CWRU for his
work at the Graduate-Faculty Dinners.
John's first association with Xi Deuteron occurred while he was
with Saga Foods catering for Western Reserve College. Brothers
Dick Traci '59 and Roger Brandt '59 convinced John to take on
the job of feeding the fraternity in 1962.
Since then, John has been an integral part of Fiji life at Xi
Deuteron. Early on, John caroused with the brothers and blessed
them with his spirited company. He took some ribbings over
such things as broken windshields, snow angels, and sink attacks, but he has endured these jests with grace.
The Fijis fondly remember Spring Break with John in Florida at
the dog tracks and celebrations of John's birthday. We all fre
quently recall these fond memories, and others as well.
Pictures
John refuses to have his picture taken by the brothers, and has
been known to sneak into the trophy room to rip them out of the
yearbooks.
His Diets
In the winter of 1985 John taped his mouth shut so he could not
eat. The brothers responded by continually insulting him. All he
could do was grunt and flash a large knife at a few of them.
Another time while on a diet, John was eating his diet concoc
tion, and topped it with a piece of pie.
Of course, everyone remembers John's old black lady accent.
More than once on a Sunday morning you could hear John talk
ing to the radio in this high voice.
Whenever brothers visited John he used to use this voice when
answering the intercom to his apartment. Also, John would
unlock the door, setting off the buzzer, only to release it when
the unsuspecting party would reach the door. Many a visitor was
frustrated into leaving in this way.
remember when I was an undergrad, it was always cool to meet
the brothers who had graduated, you know, twenty years ago. By
the way, we are trying to recruitsome more B.C.A. members. If
any Graduate brother would liketo be on the Board of Chapter
Advisors, I would like them to call me at 216-531-3000 during
business hours."
Dave also elaborated on some goals pertaining to the house
itself.
"The chapter is really running smoothly now. I would like to
see this continue. One way I think it might help is to install some
sort of continuity from semester to semester in committees. One
of the suggestions I have is to create a permanent record of what
each committee does during the semester, sort of a filing system
for committees. This would make the committee more efficient
since they would have a source of information to go to. I would
like to get involved with the Awards Committee as well. This
chapter is doing extremely well, and I would like to see Xi
Deuteron get the recognition for that progress."
We asked Dave about some of his undergraduate memories.
"My most memorable experience? Hmmmm
It's hard to
pick just one story and say This is my most memorable ex
perience'; therewereso many ofthem. AlotIcan't really tell you
for publication.'
"Let's see," he leaned back and thought, "I remember the
Pearl Harbor Day Party we had when I was a pledge. We had
been drinking a little, and afterawhile, decidedto makethe party
a coat and tie party. The onlythingwas that that wasallwe wore!
Just a coat and tie and underwear. So, we were all running
around like this when someone got the bright idea to lock all of
the women up in the trophy room. They escaped through the
window. All the Fiji Islands stickout heavily in my mind. The best
Fiji Island isthe one after you graduate. I mean, you're done with
school, and you can just party. Two of my most memorable
serious experiences were the Ohio State Acadamy and the
Toronto Ekklesia."
After Four Years of living at the Xi Deuteron house, Dave said
that he had learned a lot. With this in mind, he would like to pass
on these words of "Ad-vice."
John, thanks for the memories.

INTRAMURAL REPORT
Fiji I.M. endeavors are going quite well this year. There has
been active participation by most brothers and, more important
ly, great support by the chapter as a whole when Phi Gamms
have and event. The Fiji spirit has been overwhelming.
The end of last fall's semester saw Phi Gamma Delta in second
place in all-sports points. We finished second in track and third in
volleybal. John "The Neck" Richmond led the bowling team to
a fourth place finish while Chris Blasko and Joe Mellott pulled in
the second place ranking in doubles tennis. In singles ping-pong,
Doug Pope slammed to a third place finish. Fiji teams scored
points toward the all-sports trophy in all but one sport last fall.
The new semester brought a challenge: to win the all-sports
The chapter publication, until this semester, was a dark and
facinating mystery to me, a fresh new brother. When I took my
post as editor, the energy, care, and enthusiasm that propels this
publication to our graduate brothers slowly became apparent.
My first taste of it came with the Norris Pig Dinner lastyear. The
brothers I met all had fantastic memories to share, and they had
suggestions as well as incredibly pertinent and wise advice to
pass on. When the Smoker arrived the following fall, the per
manence of Phi Gamma Delta brotherhood sank in. Listening to
some hilarious stories and comparing them to my own unforget
table times with the chapter struck a powerful note. Meeting
Brian Franc and talking with Dick Tracy and others in my
editorial chores made it seem very unlike work.
With this note, I would like to sincerely thank my staff, James
trophy. The drive to capture this coveted crown has been led by
strong finishes in racquet sports, basketball, and wrestling. In
singles badminton, Mike Jones volleyed to a third place finish.
James Castiglione and Byron Selman defended their first place
finish in doubles racquetball. The "Twin Towers," Jim Heuer
and Dan Vaughn, and senior point guard Tim South led the
basketball team to a fourth placefinish. First placefinishes by Joe
Mellott and Bill Paxton and a third place finish by Tim Powell
