Did You Know That,
* The 1977-78 Pledge Class featured seven merit scholars— Doug
Denham, Steve Farthing, John Keesling, David Fletcher, Tim Fitzpatrick,
Sam Eggleston and Jon Kyle.
*Doug Denham (Mentioned Above) one of three pledges from V/inchester, Va., lettered as a Freshman on last year's 10-3 lacrosse squad,
"^Delta Deuteron is fortunate and delighted to have a new Purple
Legionnaire, Buddy Falconer *71» from Lynchburg, Va., Buddy, an
insurance salesman, has already made significant contributions to the
brotherhood, and is a welcome addition.
*The brotherhood raised $800 during a summer telethon, an impres
sive figure, considering less than
of those graduate brothers we
attempted to contact, could be reached. We would like to take this
opportunity to extend our sincere thanks to those v/ho shared some of
their good fortune with us during the telethon.
■*Thus far, Rush has been very productive, according to Rush
Chairman Dave Porterfield, brother of Wendell '70.
It will take a
superior effort by Dave, assistant R.C. John Keesling, and the balance
of the brotherhood to exceed last year's total of 22 pledges.
■""John Sommers *78, is now being emplo^^ed by the College as an
assistant to President Josiah Bunting.
■^Last year, we are happy t6 report. Delta Deuteron recorded the
highest C.P.A. among social fraternities on campus with a 2,Sk2
average for the year. (2.88 first semester, 3.01 second semester)
\r\nAs the fall season approaches, we ?iois look toward this year's
Intramural sports program with great optimism. Last year's pledge
class featured an outstanding array of talented and diverse athletes.
Nine of our new brothers lettered in one or more sports during their
high school careers and are counted on to upgrade our Intramural
participation. We have especially high hopes for success in the three
major sports, football, basketball, and softball. In touch football,
Mike Schumacher, John Keesling, David Fletcher, and Jon Kyle help
comprise an impressive group of ends and backs. David Porterfield,
Wes Schuessler, Doug Denham, Harold Gielov/, and Sid Hunter anchor
rugged lines on both offense and defense. The basketball schedule
also looks extremely promising, considering that three top starters
and valuable substitutes return from last year's team. Doug Denham,
David Fletcher, and John Keesling form the nucleus of a fine Fiji
squad. As the season progresses, we will do om: best to keep you well
informed of all intramural action. We hope to uphold the Phi Gam
tradition of excellence, by making this our most competitive year ever.
HOUSE
There's a nev/ look at the Delta Deuteron House this year. The
brothers have been quite busy getting the House back into shape after
our problems last winter.
The addition of a rail fence across the front
and flanking the walkway to the side entrance r-eally has accented the
House.
The grass has been resown.
The interior of the House features
newly painted walls and ceilings. Due to v/ear on the upstairs, parties
have now been moved to the basement which has been touched up enough
to last through Rush. On plan, when time and money permit, is a nev/
coat of paint for the basement v/alls. Of special pride are our newly
wall papered bathrooms due to the generosity and hard work of Fiji
David Holder '80. V/e cordially invite you to come down and check out
our recent improvements.
MESSAGE FROM THE'
Our recent telethon was a great success and I want to take this
opportunity to thank those who made pledges. Thusfar, we have received
approximately $200 of the $800 pledged.
Those graduate brothers who
have yet to send in their donation are strongly encouraged to do so,
as the proceeds from the telethon are being counted upon to provide
the funding for Parents & Friends and Homecomijn^. Each of these two
weekends should prove to be exciting ones here at the Delta Deuteron
house.
Buddy Faulconer, our new Purple Legionnaire, brought in over half
of the contributions, and we cannot thank him enough for all of the
help he has given our chapter. I hope to see all of you on P & F week
end and Homecoming.
Perge!
