Spring Rush
Scott Benhase, Lambda President, here presents a $200 check to Ms. Page Curry, coordinator for the Putnam County Health Services Clinic located in Greencastle. The
money, raised in the DePauw-Wabash Fiji football run and other first semester fundĀ·
raising activities, will be used by the clinic to aid in their move to a larger and safer
facility. At present the clinic provides medical and dental care for welfare recipients in
the Putnam County area.
Lambda Helps in the Community
The Social service program at the
Lambda Chapter has continued to
grow this past year. Receiving the
Governor's Voluntary Action Award
of Indiana from Governor Bowen
last year, the undergraduate brothers
have realized the importance of serv ing others. The satisfaction of helping others is perhaps the greatest reward, but in addition, the cooperation between the brothers necessary
to accomplish a service project certainly fosters the fraternity experience of brotherhood.
Scott Benhase's '79, enthusiasm
upon his return from Guatemala
after the Winter Term of 1977 sparked a fire that the brothers of Lambda
have kindled since. Scott presented
the possibility of the chapter raising
$600 to send Salito Romero, son of
Father Sylvester Romero, to school
for a year. Father Romero is in
charge of the mission that Scott
worked at a little over a year ago,
but fathering eight children, he cannot afford to send them to school.
The motion to raise the money
passed uncontested with each brother
pledging $10. Because of this domation, one of the churches constructed
during this past Winter Term by
DePauw students on the Guatemala
Mission has been named after the
Lambda Chapter of Phi Gamma
Delta.
Four Fijis-Scott Benhase '79,
Mark Frazier '78, Steve Mrkvicka
'79, and Greg Rittenhouse '81-were
on this year's Guatemala Mission to
help build the church named for
Lambda. It is hoped that these four
brothers will continue to spark the
fire of Lambda's outreach so that
$600 can be raised each year to help
Salito complete his education.
The brothers of Lambda have also

The spring rush program is now in
full swing and your involvement is
again needed. We have many functions planned but their success depends on the list of potential rushees
and how much our graduate brothers
get involved. Because we know that
the best prospects are those who are
recommended by graduate brothers,
we once again ask you to check with
your friends and associates to see if
they have relatives or acquaintances
who are future prospects for future
membership into our fraternity. But
recommendations are not the only
way you can help. You can be an
active participant in one of our summer rush parties. Already scheduled
are festivities on the north side of
Indianapolis for late June and in
Chicago (Glen Ellyn) in early July.
Tentative places for these festivities
have been set up but we need your
help in inviting potential Fijis and in
also coming out and meeting some
guys that other graduate brothers
have recommended. Provided in this
issue's insert is space for spring and
summer recommendations for those
who do not have time to send us a
letter concerning the individual. And
also, there is a box to check if you
want to know more about these
summer functions.
Finally, we would like to encourage you whenever possible to talk to
prospects and their parents, telling
them about fraternity life and the
advantages of our chapter. When
you do find a top-notch prospect encourage him to visit the house at his
earliest convenience and alert us so
that we may contact him.
With your active participation and
early return of your recommendations, we should acquire a fine pledge
class and insure the continuance of
our great chapter.

President's Letter
This is the first of what I hope will be many communiques with graduate
brothers. I have already met with both the Board of Chapter Advisors and am
planning a meeting with the House Corporation. The brothers at Lambda
have come a long way in improving the Chapter. This is evidenced by the
winning of the Condon Cup at last August's Fiji Academy. When you become
a good chapter as we are now, you get a taste of what it is like to be successful.
The brothers are now striving to become an outstanding chapter. It is an
exciting time to be involved in the Fraternity. If any of you graduate brothers
haven't dropped by in the last year then you haven't seen the "new" Lambda.
Coming off an exceptional Norris Pig Dinner, we are planning for what we
hope to be one of the finest Fiji Isles in Chapter history. We are also planning
for next fall 's Old Gold Day celebration, a sizeable party for all the graduate
brothers attending. If any of the past graduating classes wish to have a
reunion, please let us know so we can get to work on it right away.
Finally, in 1981 we at Lambda will be celebrating 125 years of continuous
existence. This celebration promises to be equal in magnitude to the 100 year
celebration. The Brothers have already begun preparation on this, but could
use valuable assistance from any graduate brother who wishes to contribute.
Thank you and remember, "Phi Gamma Delta is not for College days alone."

Something New Happening at DPU
Significant additions renovation of
the physical and social structure are
to be expected in the near future at
DePauw University . Thru major
projects soon to be underway are a
multiĀ·million dollar Physical Education and Recreation Center, introduction of co-ed dorms, and renovation of historic East College.
Graduate brother Edwin C. Boswell '31 as Chairman, Committee for
the Physical Education and Recreation Center Fund is helping to make
possible the 6.5 million dollar complex which will serve students far
into the future. Ed Boswell has recently kicked off a nationwide fundraising campaign among DePauw
Alumni. The complex will contain an
Olympic-sized swimming pool, classrooms and offices, ample shower,
locker, and storage space, and an
area with comfortable seating for
such spectator events as basketball,
track meets, and graduation ceremonies. The DePauw community
eagerly awaits the replacement of
out-dated Bowman Gymnasium by
this versatile and functional facility.
On April 28 President Richard
Rosser will propose to the Board of
Trustees adoption of a Co-ed dormatory system on DePauw's campus.
Under the plan Ho gate and Longden
Halls will go co-ed. Freshmen and
upperclassmen who choose not to go
co-ed will live in Rector Hall. Bishop
Roberts Hall would house freshmen
women and upperclasswomen who
choose not to go co-ed. Freshmen
women would be housed in Mason
and Lucy Rowland Halls. The administration and the students foresee
co-ed living units as allowing more
interaction among different parts of
campus and a wider variety of living
options for students.
Last but not least of the planned
changes is the restoration of East
College. The architect's principle aim
will be to modernize the facility while
returning the exterior of the building
to its original appearance. Thus far
$1.5 of the $2 .5 million required for
the project has already been raised.
The restoration would include bringing the current structure up to fire
standards, replacement of floors,
removal of outside fire escapes, and
updating lighting and classrooms.
DePauw hopes to begin actual work
on East College within the next two
years. Mr. Frederick A. Sanders,
Director of Development stresses
that without alumni support these
essential improvements will not be
possible.

LAMBDA HELPS IN COMMUNITY
(Continued from page 1)
been active in their service to the
Greencastle community and surrounding communities. The chapter
has held four work projects this year.
The first was a all-house project at
Camp Riverdale, a United Methodist
youth camp. An old cement block
storage building was taken down
block by block to save the camp the
cost of hiring a bulldozer crew. A
second fall project saw several Fijis
go to the Lily of the Valley mission
in Indianapolis. Here the brothers
did some needed painting. The
upperclassmen returned this spring
to finish work at the Lily of the Valley mission, a project the brothers of
Lambda initiated two years ago. The
other spring project saw the new
initiates go to Rockville to paint a
100-year-old country church. All
four projects were great successes.
The Lambda Brothers also combined their running abilities with the
brothers of the Psi Chapter at
Wabash for the annual "Fiji Football
Run," which raised $200 for the Putnam County Health Service Clinic.
In addition to these service projects, Lambda has seven brothers
offering one hour weekly to such
organizations as the Learning Center
for the Mentally Retarded, Indiana
Boys' and Girls' Schools, Head Start
Program, and Big Brother Program.
Lambda's Social Service program
has earned the chapter's recognition
as a leading program in the state as
well as on the DePauw campus. The
brothers of the Lambda Chapter see
this as an honor and a challenge to
continue their service to others in the
years ahead.
Lambdas in Who's

Lambda brothers.
They are: Tristam Coffin '33, William P. Cooling '36, Russell R. Malik
'38, Harold H. Negley '44, Howard
C. Peterson '30, Warren J. Reynolds
'39, J. Stanford Smith '36, Elbert T.

Emanuel W . Weiler '36.
\r\nPlease Write!
Dear Graduates:
My name is Jeff Rikhoff, Lambda's Historian. I'm working on the house's
scrap book and I was wondering if any of you had any pictures of past college
days. I think it would be interesting to see what Lambdas were doing in past
years. Here I have only recent pictures for the scrap book, it would be a much
better and more well-rounded scrap book, if people realized there was a house
back then. You can prove it to us. On the back of the pictures you send us,
please identify the brothers in the picture and tell us why the picture was
taken. If you don't have any pictures and you have the time, I would appreciate it if you could sit down and write me about some experience you had as an
undergraduate. Maybe, if it works out, and I think it will, we will print the
stories that you send to us. The stories can be funny or can even be about your
post-graduate life, such as your job, promotions, or how beautiful your wife
is. I just want you brothers to write to me. I haven't had mail for weeks. My
Mom's run out of stamps. Please write!
Seriously, I am interested about your experiences since I'm now going
through what you've already been through. Maybe you can enlighten the way
for me.
Perge!
Fraternally yours,
Jeff Rikhoff

1978 Norris Pig Dinner
The '78 Pig Dinner was a success
this year at Lambda. The morning
began with the initiation of all nineteen of our pledges, the first time in
years that every member of the
pledge class have been activitated
together on the same day . This also
means that Lambda is now a fully
active house. We are proud of our
new brothers and we know they will
be an asset to the fraternity.
The Dinner started with cocktails
served in the afternoon and then the
Tiger Fiji
meal. Presiding over the dinner was
Master of Ceremonies Steven R.
Smith '76. Speaker for the dinner
was Archon Secretary Joseph B.
Carney '50 . Brother Carney gave an
interesting talk on his function as
Archon Secretary and also some
insight on his profession in law.
Many thanks to both Brothers
Smith and Carney for their participation in the Dinner .
After the meal Gold and Silver
Owls were presented to those Lambdas who have active brothers in Phi
Gamma Delta for fifty and twenty-

five years respectively. Sidney E.
McClellan '31 and Richard H. Crowder '31 were present to receive their
Gold Owl Awards. We congratulate
these men. Ray Swanson '27 and
Paul Detlefs '77 won door prizes for
the oldest brother in attendance and
greatest distance traveled to the
dinner respectively. Paul made it all
the way from Boston to be at the
Dinner.
We wish to thank all Brothers who
attended the Pig Dinner, and hope
that you enjoyed coming as much as
we enjoyed having you.

Plea for Support Mark Frazer Awarded NCAA Grant
Dear Brothers:
The men of Phi Gamma Delta here
at DePauw have been working and
progressing toward making Fiji the
finest fraternity on campus. This can
be evidenced in their recent receiving
of the Condom Cup for the most improved Fiji chapter. In the quest to
become one of the finest chapters in
our organization they have been
pleading for better graduate support.
This support does not necessarily
mean monetary support, rather what
they are seeking from us is our loyalty. Better graduate relations will be
accomplished only if we the graduates do our part in taking interest in
our fraternity. Graduate relations is
not the duty of only the undergraduate chapter but a two-way street and
must be supported by us.
In the next month there will be
two events which may offer us a
chance to get away, relax, have a
good time, and show the undergraduates that we are loyal Fijis.
April 21 is Little 500 weekend which
is generally a very good weekend on
the DePauw campus. Two weeks
later, May 6, is the famous and best
time of all-the Fiji Isle. So let's get
out and offer our support.
Perge!
