The chapter house is old and in run-down
condition. Though we have had numerous
clean-ups this year, we need the loan from the
University to fix the plumbing, electrical, and
fire safety problems. I have talked with a general
contractor and have received estimates on the

needed repairs. I do not foresee any major
probems in the chapter financing this large loan.
To assure that we do not have any problems we
may have to ask for monetary support from the
graduate brothers.
Since I took office on February 1, formal
meetings making use of the Ritual are held
monthly (In addition to informal weekly meet
ings). This practice satisfies the national's re
quirements of how often a formal meeting
should be held.

The brothers of the chapter are not just a
bunch of members in a social club. A large per
centage of the brothers involve themselves in
extra-curricular activities ranging from the Big

collegiate athletic teams, members of Contact,

Dear Brothers,
The reason I feel the letter was sent out was
to acquire graduate brother involvement with
the chapter on a continuing basis. This is im
portant because from time to time a chapter has
a "bad" President at its helm. Subsequently some
of the programs a "good" President set up dis
appear. To make sure that a good system of
programs are set up and followed through each
year the chapter needs graduate support.
In response to John D. Sheppard's letter, a
House Corporation of twenty-five interested
graduate brothers is being established. Zeta
Deuteron needs this House C.orporation to acquii e a large loan from the University which we
plan to use this summer to fix-up the house.

As a result of the letter, the chapter has
started to move down the path to becoming a
great chapter. We need support from graduate
brothers to make sure we continue on a straight
path towards that goal. If you have any sugges
tions or are interested in helping in any way,
please write me at my summer address:

FIJI'S FARE WELL IN IM'S
In keeping with the athletic tradition of the
house, the Brothers of Phi Gamma Delta distin
guished themselves admirably in various sports.
Our IM Football Team, brandishing an ag
gressive, intimidating style, forged into the
playoffs and finished in fifth place. The high
light of the season was a 20-6 shellacking of the
PiKA house, one of last year's finalists. Charlie
Brown (78), Keith Van Lanen (79), and Ed Tutak (79) made the IM allstar team at the conclu
sion of the season.
In Wrestling action, the FIJI grapplers

overall. Two of our outstanding pledges.
Holmes Ginn and Hank Wall, made the finals in
their respective weight classes. Ginn (81) won
his final match at the 130 pound class and Wall
(81) placed second in the 140 pound class.
Brothers Larry Kanavas (78) placed third in the
170 pound class and Keith Van Lanen (79) did
the same in the heavyweight division.
COMMUNITY SERVICES
The Brothers of Zeta Deuteron were again
active in social and community services. Our
Second Annual Christmas Party for underpriviledged children was very successful. Thirty
children came and the Brothers gave each child
a present. Skiff Bailey (78) turned in another
convincing performance as Santa Claus. Games
and refreshments rounded out a fun-filled
afternoon.
Three Brothers participated in the Second
Annual Ring-turn Phi Road Race for MultipleSclerosis. Gil Pearsall (80), Peter Pearl (78), and
Ralph Moore (77) all finished the fifteen mile
course.
During the halftime festivities of the Rutgers
lacrosse game, Dana Samuelson (80) participat
ed in a pie-eating contest.The contestbenefitted

The Ping-Pong and Bowling teams each
fared well this winter. The Ping-Pong squad
finished with a 4-2 record and made the IM
playoffs while our Bowlers posted a 5-1 record
and also made the playoffs.
This year's Basketball team, under the au
spices of Coach Bob Baskins (78), left the com
petition in their wake. The team finished the
season undefeated, but lost a heartbreaker in
the playoffs to Phi Kappa Sigma. Coach Baskin's
scoring machine set a record for most points
scored in an IM game: 85. Carl Golcik (79) was
in the pivot for the FIJI hoopsters and provided
a potent scoring threat from the inside while
Chug Puryear (78) provided the longrange
points.
Our Softball team was 8-2 overall. They de

ship. The number one defense beld its op

FIJI'S TAKE HOLD OF LEADERSHIP
REIGNS IN 5 SPORTS
In an impressive show of leadership, five
brothers were elected captain of their respective
team. They are Carl Folcik (79) Football, Roger
Yale (79) Soccer, Dan Kniffen (79) Wrestling,
and Jack Norberg (79) and Stu Atkinson (80)
Track. Dan Kniffen and Jack Norberg were
captains of their respective teams during the
1977-78 season. Charlie Brown (78) was a cap
tain of the 1977-78 Lacrosse Team.
Carl Folcik and Joe Letosky were standout
defensive linebackers for the Generals. Among
their teammates were seven other Fiji's. Stu
Atkinson and Scott McLam (80) started in the
Generals backfield and soon developed into a
swift and hardhitting duo. Gouging out the
holes on the front line was brother Dan Kniffen
at offensive tackle. Starting in the defensive
secondary for the Generals were brothers Jack
Norberg and Kevin McGowan (80). Mike Mrlik
(80) played defensive tackle and pledge Chris
Leiser (81) split time at the quarterback position.
Atkinson and Folcik received post-season
honors in the Old Dominion Athletic Confer
ence.
In Soccer, Roger Yale was a fullback for the
Generals. Other Fiji's on the team included
Dana Samuelson (80), a halfback, Larry Kanavas
(78) a striker and Doug Seitz (80) a fullback.
Dan Kniffen, captain of the wrestling squad,
completed his season by going to the Division
111 Nationals.
Four Fiji's were members of the W&rL Track
Team. Jack Norberg, Chris Leiser, and Stu At
kinson all were sprinters. Tom Turco (79) ran
the long distance races.
Five brothers were members of the nationally
ranked Lacrosse team. Goalie Charlie Brown,
FIJI SOCIAL LIFE BETTER THAN EVER
The Brothers of Phi Gamma Delta continue
to have outstanding parties throughout the
year.
The early season rush parties were particu
larly successful with live music at three of them.
These parties are crucial for the recruitment of
pledges in that they give them a taste of the
general atmosphere of the house.
The Parents' Weekend Affair was its usual
success. The parents were treated to a steak
dinner, cocktails, and a casino. Purple Legion-
aire, Ralph Moore, once again took the fifth of
Jack Daniels for the most earnings of the night.
In addition to the icy winds and an unusual
amount of snow, February brought the annual
Champagnes Party to the FIJI house. The
brothers were treated to live music, generous
amounts of champagne and many girls. Need
less to say the bubbly brought on many hang
overs the next morning at brunch.
Fancy Dress Weekend, the event of the year
for the University, brought the brothers and
their dates together for an intimate cocktail party
before the Ball. The Duke Ellington Orchestra
provided the music and the weekend proved to
be the top party of the year.
FIJI Islands, with extensive preparation, was
the highlight of the year. It was a cooperative
effort between the pledges and the brothers
that transformed the house into a South Sea
senario. Dressed in Polynesian garb the brothers
and their dates boogied the night away to the
rock rifts of "M. F. Rattlesnake". Brother Roger
Yale disappointed no one as he appeared in his
grass skirt to the delight of all who attended.
With sawdust between their toes and bellies full
of grain, the brothers retired for the night

success. Other FIJI members were Kevin McFadden (79), Midfield, Bart Peaslee (80) attack,
Scott McLam, defense, and Jerry Broccoli (81)
midfield.
Many Brothers and Pledges also participated
in the different J.V. programs at W&L.
