Three Social Service Projects Completed
The men of Lambda are once again
leading the way in social service projects at DePauw University. The
projects already completed are: the
DePauw-W abash Football Run , and
two major undertakings, one to the
inner-city of Indianapolis and one to
a Youth Camp in southern Indiana.
Before most were out of bed on
Saturday, November 12, 1977, the
members of Lambda and our brothers up the road at Wabash were
running a football from Crawfordsville (Wabash), to Greencastle (DePauw), as part of the preparations
leading up to the famous "Monon
Bell" game between the two schools.
Area merchants contributed money
for each mile run and when it was all
over, Lambda had collected over
$330 to donate to the Putnam
County Health Service Clinic. The
clinic provides the only health care to
the poor in Putnam County. Now
able to move to a better facility, the
Clinic was happy to receive the additional support.
Our inner-city project involves a
return visit to the Lily of the Valley
Rescue Mission in Indianapolis. Two
years ago, the Brothers spent five
weekends completely remodeling and
painting a building that had been
condemned by the Health Department . It was our job to repair it in
order to meet public standards . On
returning the Brothers installed a
new bathroom floor and laid a new
roof on the back side of the house.
Rev. Thomas and Rev. Harrelson of
the Mission were very happy to have
us once again .
Another service project this fall
was at Camp Riverdale in southern
Indiana. Here at a Methodist Youth
Camp, the Brothers spent the day
laying a hundred yards of barbed
wire, tearing down a concrete pump
house, and clearing a 30 ft. wide trail
down a hillside to a river. We all had
In October, 1977, the Lambda
Chapter of Phi Gamma Delta held
our annual retreat at Brother Herb
Miller's in Indianapolis. Herb is the
brother of Section Chief Bill Miller
and is a Fiji brother from the Zeta
Chapter at Indiana University .
This is the third such retreat that
we have held in the past year. The
chapter seeks to use these retreats as
a way of solidifying our brotherhood
along with planning and directing
our efforts for the upcoming year.
These retreats are a big reason why
Lambda now has t he Condon Cup in
its possession.
This most recent retreat was used
to reorganize our committee system
and set goals with the large contingent of graduates that were present
pledging to help us. The graduates
were headed by George Dirks, House
Corporation President; Joe Carney,
Arcon; Alex Rogers , Purple Legionnaire; and Kent Fletcher, member
BCA.
Following this intensive learning
session, Brother Herb honored the
chapter for the winning of the Condon Cup by inviting the Butler
Thetas over for an afternoon picnic
complete with football and swimming in Herb's pool.
It was a rewarding day and Lambda accomplished much towards improving ourselves in the next year.
Once again we wish to thank Brother
Herb Miller for his fine hospitality.
great fun because we were accompanied by our Theta sisters on the
project.
This semester has been a great one
for social service and the next promises to be even better.

Getting In Touch
This year Lambda Chapter has
something we haven't had in a long
time, something to brag about. As
the other articles in this, and the previous Tiger Fiji show, we worked
hard and came a long way. Unfortunately, in the area of graduate relations we still have a long way to
go.
Hot on the heels of our other
successes we are beginning what we
hope to make an active, helpful and
enjoyable program for both the graduates and ourselves.
Sotar this yearwe have sent out
close to three hundred personal letters from brothers in the house to
graduate brothers in the area. Although the response was not overwhelming, we would like to thank
those who replied, and especially
those who found the time to visit.
Throughout the rest of the year we
will continue to try and reestablish
contact with as many of you as possible. Your time and interest will be
greatly appreciated.
Below is a list of Brothers for whom we
do not have a current address. If you
have what you believe to be the ·correct
address of any of these Brothers, Please
send their name and address to us.

Winter 1978
Dear Graduate Brothers:
With this being my last opportunity to communicate with the great majority of you in my capacity as Chapter President, I want to use this letter to
thank a specific group of people who have given so much to this fraternity of
ours over the past four years. I am talking about the group of seniors who will
graduate from DePauw in May. This is not to suggest that the underclassmen
of Lambda Chapter have not made a great contribution; they have, but their
time to be thanked is in the future. I'm talking about the group that came
together as pledges in Lambda of Phi Gamma Delta in 1974; who were not
particularly happy with the situation as they perceived it. Now though, these
same men can look back after four years and feel a great deal of satisfaction
because of the contributions they have made to betterment of the Fraternity
of Phi Gamma Delta.
I am talking about Mike Ricks, who served as President of the chapter in
one of the most trying years in recent Lambda history, at a time when he alone
was ready to step forward to take this responsibility. I am talking about Steve
Glassman, wno lias spearheaded the drive to improve .the house structure; his
work culminating in the new library , basement, and study rooms . I am talking about Mark Frazer, who has stabilized our financial situation in his two
years as Treasurer. Not only has the Chapter begun to show a profit, but it
has been given a source of leadership that few but Mark can give. Mike Dolinski is another one. He has singlehandedly completed such projects as the
charity basketball game and creating a workable house contract system. The
great rush over the past two years has been due to the hard work of two more
of these men: Steve Herr and Dave Goltermann. I am talking about the other
members of the class who have each made their own contributions to making
this Chapter what it is today.
I am not saying that the above mentioned deserve all of the credit for our
most recent and important award, the Condon Cup. What I am saying is that
this group has, over a four year period given freely of themselves to improve
this Fraternity. Their love for Phi Gamma Delta has been clearly expressed
through their work. It is my hope that their efforts will inspire those who
follow to continue this example of service, and for those who have gone before
to recognize and appreciate the contributions that this group has made to this
great Fraternity of Phi Gamma Delta .

Pledge Class Letter
We, the pledge class of 1981, have
many goals and ambitions for the
next four years. At the present time
they are vague, but as we learn more
about the campus and Phi Gamma
Delta our goals and ambitions are
becoming more distinct. We are optimistic about the future and the
changes that it will bring.
Our present goal is to become active members of Phi Gamma Delta ,
enabling us to gain a better understanding of the fraternity. During
our pledgeship we hope to work to gether as a pledge class, and with the
entire house. We also hope to improve the academic status of the
house through contributing a high
pledge class grade point average.
Coinciding with this, we hope to improve our campus relations and
campus image and strive to remain
one of the best and most respected
houses on campus. To achieve this
we hope to do what we can to improve our rushing program which
has been highly successful in the
past. Along the same lines , we hope
to maintain and to improve our excellent pledge program , which is essential for the continuance of a
strong fraternity . On the other hand,
we hope to improve our graduate relations program and regain the graduate brothers ' interest in the fraternity. Through the achievement of
these goals, we hope to reach our ultimate goal of bringing the Cheney
Cup to Lambda.
Looking into the future we recognize the importance of our graduating year, as it will be Lambda's
125th anniversary. With this in mind
we are already planning a celebration
which will include as many graduate
brothers as possible. Until then , we
will try to do our best for Lambda.

Fijis Serve On Guatemala Work Project
During Winter Term this year,
three Lambda Fijis, Mark Frazer
'78 , Scott Benhase '79 , and Greg
Rittenhouse '81 , traveled to the
Central American country of Guatemala to spend a month of service at
the Episcopal Mission of St. Stephens in the Province of Izabal.
Brother Frazer took with him a
check for $600 that was given to the
mission priest, Father Sylvester
Romero, for the education of his
young son , Sylvester , Jr. Brother
Benhase worked in the area last year
and recognized the need for mone-
tary support for the young boy. The
entire chapter responded generously
with the amount needed . Father
Romero was so happy at the news
that he plans to name of the new
med.!£.al dispensaries that the Brothers helped to build after the chapter, ' 'El Dispensario Lambda de Phi
Gamma Delta." We hope to have a
picture and a more detailed story of
the trip in the next issue. We are also
proud to have the opportunity to
contribute our time and resources to
such a worthy cause .

Social Service
Awards
Lambda was fortunate over the
past year to win a major award from
the State of Indiana. The award is
the "Governor's Volunteer Action
Award" and was given to Lambda
last spring. The award presented to
Lambda by Linda Cobb, the Governor's Director of Volunteer Service
capped an exciting year of service for
the chapter. The Brothers are proud
of the job that they did last year and
they are continuing to serve the community in the best tradition of Phi
Gamma Delta.

l.M. Report for 1977-78
The men of Phi Gamma Delta are
already doing well in this years intramural program. In football, we finished third in our league and like last
year we placed many on the all-star
team including Steve Herr '78, Steve
Glassman '78, Mike Ricks '78, Bob
Thomas '79, Howard Smith '80, and
Don Ricks '80. Meanwhile in minor
sports the Islanders picked up
several points in ping-pong and
tennis; and we reached the play-offs

in bowling.
As for the rest of the semester
wrestling and with our strong freshman class, we expect to keep our fine
record in that sport.
As for the rest of the year, we are
confident that we can improve on our
1976-77 final standings of fifth place
by raising the caliber of participation
in the minor intramural sports. This
should insure us of our best year in a
long time.
