This year's Pig Dinner speaker is Archon President
Louis A. "Bud" Mangels. Bud Mangels, Community
Relations Manager of Ohio Bell Telephone Company,
was elected Archon President of the International
Fraternity of Phi Gamma Delta at the Fraternity's
130th Ekklesia in August 1978.
He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in physical
anthropology from Indiana University in 1956. He is
one of the few Field Secretaries who enjoyed working
for both Cecil J. Wilkinson and William S. Zerman,
This year's 11th Annual Pig Dinner will be held the
weekend of April 27-29. The festivities will begin Fri
day night with a beer party welcoming home the
graduates. Saturday morning we will have various
sporting events. Tentatively scheduled are tennis,
basketball, putt-putt golf, and softball. All partici
pants should meet at the house at 10:00 a.m. for
complete instructions.
A meeting with House Coporation President Jim
Purcell will be held at the lodge Saturday afternoon
Executive Directors. He has been a Section Chief and
at 5:00 p.m.
Assistant Graduate Secretary for the Northern Ohio
and Michigan sections. He served as Archon Councilor
and Archon Vice President before being elected
Archon President. He has served as Ritualist for the
until 7:00 p.m. The dinner will be held at the Georgia
Center for Continuing Education at 7:00 p.m. Our
master of ceremonies is Bill Bracewell, one of our
Fraternity, and has spoken at and attended many Pig
Dinners, installations. Section Conventions, and Fiji
Academies.
Brother Mangels and his wife, Barbara, a Kappa
Alpha Theta at Ohio State University, reside in Fairlawn, Ohio with their two children. Kirk and Julie.
Beginning at 6:00 p.m. we will have an open bar
chapter advisors. A brunch will be held at 10:00 for
those who want to eat before they depart Athens.
It is very important that all graduates register at
one of the booths Friday afternoon or Saturday
morning. It is necessary that this be completed before
participating in the activities or the banquet. Your co
operation will be greatly appreciated.
Once again, we hope that you can join us in Athens
to renew fraternal bonds and make new ones. Look
ing forward to seeing you!

As spring quarter gets under way at Georgia, Kappa
Deuteron prepares itself to continue the excellence the
chapter has enjoyed in the past. The fraternity is cur
rently in second place in intramurals with a strong
spring quarter expected. As defending champions it
should be a competive quarter. This past quarter Phi
Gamma Delta was again number one in scholarship, en
suring the IFC scholarship trophy to the Fiji's for the
eighth consecutive year. This scholastic achievement is
something we can all point to with pride.
Socially the fraternity is thriving. We have four socials
this quarter and some fraternity function most every
weekend. In addition to expanding the social aspect of
the fraternity, we are also growing in the area of com
munity service. On April 12, the Fiji's will co-sponsor
with Alpha Chi Omega sorority a charity hoedown to
benefit Easter Seals society* this project is in addition to
our annual pitch in week where the fraternity cleans up

HOUNDOG HOEDOWN
The winsome wahinis from next door at the Alpha
Chi Omega house have asked for us to co-sponsor
their second annual Houndog Hoedown. This is the
Alpha Chi's big service project of the year, with pro
ceeds going to Easter Seals.
As you know. Phi Gams don't undertake a project
without putting 110% effort into it. This hoedown is
no exception, as we have written up posters, designed
T-shirts, set up marquees, aired radio and television
plugs, and advertised in university and local news
papers.
The event will take place in the little arena at the
Coliseum on Thursday, April 12th, with entertain

band. Admission will be $2.50 for all the beer you
can drink and a shot at the door prizes that were do

I would like to ask if any graduate brothers know of a

All in all, the hoedown should be a good time for

GARTER
WINTER
SPORTS
The mighty Kappa Deuteron Fiji's traveled to Gatlinburg for Purple Garter this year. As always, many
strange and unusual happenings occured on the trip.
Everything from skiing and sightseeing to car wrecks
and surgical tricks took place at our gala winter cele
bration.
The weekend started off with a bang as brother
Ray Leake hit a telephone pole, a fire hydrant, a road
sign, and about everything else in Franklin, North
Carolina. On Friday night, most of the early arrivers
enjoyed an inexpensive evening of night skiing. For
many of the novica skiiers, this was an event in itself.
The non-skiiers enjoyed beer and T.V. in one of the
brother's rooms.
During the day Saturday, most people either enjoy
ed skiing, sightseeing, or resting up for the big night.
The brothers were treated to a delicious meal of roast
beef and chicken. The "garter ceremony" then got
underway with Brother Roger Strauss as M.C. and
Brothers Anthony Cook, Mike Quilling, Steve Nail,
and Bob Cheeley as judges. After about an hour, the
competition came down to three finalists: Donnie
Chapman, Neal Simmons, and Allen Tucker. With the
help of a surgical mask, rubber gloves, and a stetho
scope, Brother Tucker was able to take the prize.
After the ceremony, Johnny White and the Elite
Band played for the group. In keeping with tradition,
pants were lowered at about 10:00. Brother Todd
Barnes won the award for the best pair of "boxers."
Everyone happily returned to their rooms after the
dance to catch a few Z's. All of the brothers returned
to Athens Sunday in one piece to reminise about the
Winter quarter was both an exciting and frustrating
as the Phi Gams clinched both the Basketball and
Badmitton titles, yet slipped to 3rd in the running for
the Govenors League Trophy for '78-'79.
The Basketball team undefeated in regulation play,
defeated the Chi Phi's in the championship game by a
narrow 2 point margin, in a game marred by poor of
ficiating. The FIJI Badmitton team, composed of sin
gles players Bob Christopher and Jim Braden, teamed
with doubles players Randal Bentley and Walker
Campbell to defeat the TKE's and clinch first place.
However, the Cake Race, normally a strong point
for the FIJI'S, was a disappointment, as the Gams
finished fourth. A good team effort allowed the Gams
to finish fourth also in weight lifting. Soccer finished
with a 1-4-1, near the bottom of the event. Shuffle
board was not played this winter, but will be held in
the spring.
Unfortunately, the FIJI bowling team, which fin
ished, undefeated, was given no team points, because
of an incident of unsportsmanlike conduct which oc
curred with the Sigma Chi Fraternity during a Feb
ruary 13th match. As such, the Phi Gams were denied
a possible 110 points, which would have placed them
in 2nd place, close behind the Chi Psi's.
Spring looks good athletically, with Softball, Shuffleboard and Tennis Doubles, FIJI strong points, on
the agenda, as well as Archery, Track, Swimming and
Diving, Horseshoes, and a new event, "Bulldog push
ups".
good times of the weekend.
CLYDESDALES!
On Friday, March 30, at approximately 3:00, the
Budweiser's world famous Clydesdale houses pulled
their old-time wagon into the parking lot of the Fiji
house. There to greet them were about 500 students. It
was a beautiful afternoon and social spirits were high.
The Budweiser's Clydesdales helped to publicize FijiBudweiser Pitch-In Week, which runs from April 10-12.
The Clydesdales are kept by the Anheuser-Busch brew
ery and travel all over the country publicizing BiMweiser beer. The Fiji's owe sincere graditude to Leon Farm
er owner of the Athens area Budweiser distributorship,
who made the entire afternoon a complete success.

The spring of 1979 brought with it a new stream of
fresh blood by way of initiation of the Zeta Deuterons and new leadership with the installation of new
officers. The Kappa Deuteron Chapter heads into a
new season with Warren Ragsdale as its new President
taking the reins over from a Bob Cheeley. Bob has
been accepted at the Law School of Georgia and will
enter in the Fall of 1979. Warren will be a Senior
Marketing major.
Ole Whatsizname for this issue of Fijiuga is Jim
"Purcy" Purcell. "Purcy", however, has hardly been a
mystery to the Kappa Deuteron Chapter. He has con
tinued his active Fiji life as president of the House
Corporation since 1975 in addition to serving as Sec
tion Chief for Section Eight.
Upon completing his undergraduate work at the
University of Georgia in 1973, Jim attended the
Georgia Law School where he graduated in 1975. At
his present home in Augusta, he is serving as Chief
Assistant to the District Attorney and hopes to have
his own private practice in the future. In his spare
time, Jim teaches water safety for the American Red
Cross.
Jim has also been exposed as a godfather! — Yes,
he is godfather for Sam and Julie Rich wine's new
baby girl, Betsy.
We look forward to seeing Jim at our annual Pig
Dinner on April 27th and 28th.
David Brazeal has been elected as the new treasurer
relieving Greg Sowell at that post. David is a senior
working on his B.B.A. in accounting. Greg will still be
an active undergraduate senior working on a degree in
economics with acceptance to law school as his over
riding objective. Taking over the position of Corres
ponding Secretary for the new term is Donny Chap
man. Donny is relieving Steve Nail from that post.
Steve will graduate next winter with a B.B.A. in
marketing and Donny will be a senior working toward
a degree in Real Estate. Roger Strauss is our new Re
cording Secretary, taking over for Mike Dendy. Many
may remember Roger as the "Unknown Candidate"
in the election campaign in the Winter of 1977 - if
not for his term as President of the Student Body.
Mike is a Public Relations major and will also be a
senior next year.
Warren Ragsdale, our newly elected President,
turns over his former post of Historian to newly
elected Steve Poole. Steve is the only non-senior of
ficer (a junior) and is a Finance major. The entire fra
ternity is truely proud of the performance of our
former officers and commends them for their fine ser
FIJI SUPERSTARS
The University of Georgia Budweiser Superstars
Team comprised of 4 Fiji's and 4 girls recently won
the Georgia State Championship and competed in the
Regional competition in Tampa, Florida.
The Fiji's, Danny Anderson, Mike Dendy, Billy
Dellinger, and Randall Bentley and the girls partici
pated in events including: team frisbee, 880 relay.
Round O Bud (a basketball game). Tug of War, vol
leyball and an obstacle course.
The state championship, in Macon, was held after
our annual French Whore Party and in a stead drizzle.
But the team overcame the cloudiness, of head and
weather, and won two of the six events to claim the
vice. The Kappa Deuteron Chapter had an extremely
successful year with a fine pledge class and another
fine academic average winning the scholarship trophy
for the 9th consecutive year. This would not have
been possible without the superior leadership of our
past officers and their enduring belief in the spirit of
all FIJI'S.
With the new officers showing sincere dedication
to their job already, the future of Kappa Deuteron
looks as bright and successful as its excellent past
years.
championship in competition with 6 other colleges
from around the state.
After winning the state competition the team, along with Coach Rob Zeyfang, received an all expense
paid trip to Tampa to compete in the Regionals. A
trip through Bush Gardens and all the beer the team
could drink became too big an obstacle to cross and
rendered a 5th place finish.(We did however win the
partying competition).
As usual the Georgia team was sponsored by the
Fiji's great friend Leon Farmer who accompanied us
on the trip.

On February 26, the fraternity initiated 16 pledges
into the bond of brotherhood. The pledges consisted
of 15 men from the Zeta Deuteron pledge class, and 1
from the Epsilon Deuteron pledge class. The pledges,
from the beginning of their pledge program, showed a
