TO Speak at
When elected to serve as chapter president,I stepped into a position to lead a
group of men who already have high standards of excellence. These standards were
set by our previous presidents, Ted Durkin '93 and Andrew Twiggar '94. Through
their leadership the house has excelled in all areas offraternity life. This leaves me
with the task oftrying to raise those standards another level and to push Beta Chi

After winning the campus award last year for the best rush program. Beta Chi
had another successful rush and 15 young men have decided to pledge our chapter.
These men represent many interests and backgrounds.
We are very proud oflast semester's academic accomplishments. Last fall we
increased our grade point average from a 2.67 to a 2.90, which placed our
chapter's ranking at third of the 28 fraternities at Lehigh (see chart below). We do
not plan to stop there. We are taking measures to reward scholarship and hope to
be at number one by next semester.

A Note of Thanks From AK.
Sorry I am late in writing to my friends and brothers at the
Phi Gamma Delta house. Time has just flown by since that
wonderful day last May when you honored me for my 25
years ofservice.
I've been very lucky in my lifetime, serving my country in
the U.S. Navy for over 20 years and then 25 years with the
Fijis. During these years I met a lot of nice yotmg men and
many wonderful parents. They became family to me. Like
most families we had good days and a few not so good, but
overall it was a great 25 years to me.
Most of all I want everyone to know how much I
appreciated being honored at Pig Dinner. I truly enjoyed
the night, which I will never forget. The great meal, the
gifts, and certainly being made a brother.
I want to thank Rod Hanlon '69 and the committee for
their efforts, and some other people in particular; Dennis
Biggins'75, Bill Bast '79, Jim Schunck '79, Bob Currie '77,
Andy Rod '83, Doug Breen '68, Jim Folkes '76 and Gary
Fiji Sporting Tradition Continues

returning letterman and captain Ted Durkin '94, Chris Cmger
'96 and Mark Tendler'96 will be joined by newcomers William
Pietragallo '97, Greg Boye'97 and Rob Mackenzie '97.
Kyle Yerk '96 is one ofLehigh's top golfers. Daniel Petrecca
'95 will be facing offat midfield on the nationally ranked Top
25 Lehigh men's lacrosse team. Both Kyle and Daniel are happy
to be playing a big part for their respective teams, and both are
expected to have great seasons.
Dave Pakula'97 and Ryan Wilson '97 both played on the
football team last fall and are looking forward to their spring
workouts and another Patriot League winning season next fell.
Todd Goldberg '94 was the leading scorer on the Lehigh ice
hockey team. He was joined by Rod Mancuso '95, John
Babson '95, J.R. Gulka '96, Marshall Yellin '97 and Kevin
Trezza '83. I'm sure there are many others I didn't
mention, and I thank them too.

Last semester our second annual "Luigi Fiji" was a great
success. We raised money for the Bethlehem Boys' Club by
hosting three sittings of a pasta dinner at the house. We hired
strolling musicians, and the brothers worked as the cooks and
waiters. The individual effort to serve the community is
strong within the house; we have seven brothers who
volunteer their Saturdays to tutor local teenagers.
Most of the brothers in the house are active in athletics.
We have brothers competing at the varsity level in football,
lacrosse, baseball and golf. We also have members very active
in the club level in ice hockey, rugby, squash and skiing. We
are currently in second place in intramural competition.
It goes without saying that our chapter is recognized as
one of the strongest houses at Lehigh. I would rather you

By Greg Boye '97, Pledge Class President
The Beta Chi Chapter of Phi Gamma Delta has succeeded this
year in obtaining 15 outstanding men. We arc a diverse group,
each with noteworthy talents, interests and personalities. The
class as a whole is quite athletically oriented, with members
participating in many Lehigh sports. We have four mgby
players, three baseball players, two hockey players, and one
not take my word for it, but come see for yourself. This year's

hospitality of the undergraduates. I look forward to seeing as

Where Are They Today?
Fiji in the Spotlight: Joe Walton '65
By Bob Davies
Joe was born in Lackawanna, N.Y., the first offour children of
Joe and Louise Walton, who now live in Sun City, Ariz. Siblings
include a brother Pete, Dartmouth '67, who was an outstanding
football player and is now a medical doctor in Burlington, Vt.;
and sisters Sally, Penn State '75, an English teacher in Pueblo,
Colo., and Wendy, University of Colorado '78,a psychologist
practicing in Steamboat Springs, Colo.
Joe lived and attended grade school in Hamburg, N.Y. Just
before his freshman year in high school, his
family moved to Johnstown, Pa., where he
attended Westmont High. He applied to
only one school — Lehigh.
His father is a Lehigh '37 mechanical
engineer who worked for Bethlehem Steel
his entire career, retiring as assistant general
He recalls that it was a wonderful time for fraternities at Lehigh
and Phi Gam was on top, with outstanding students, athletes
and campus leaders — and the house was in great physical
shape. Much ofthe success was due to the strong leadership
provided by the graduate brothers, particularly Forty Bast.
Joe was "E" for his class, which was a real honor because
several outstanding campus leaders were arotmd, including Jim
Miller, who was vice president of the Class of1965. Joe waited
tables at the Hut to pay for flying lessons.
House Party Weekends were the social

Industries, an aerospace manufacturer. For the past year he has
been doing management consulting in the region between New
York City and Philadelphia and as far west as Harrisburg.
Occasionally, he takes an engagement out of the region. For
example, last year he spent three months in Portland, Ore.,
consulting with an industrial pump company. Throughout his
career he has concentrated on manufacturing and operations
problems with an emphasis on materials management. Joe says

East football team in his senior year.
His proudest football accomplishment? Never losing to
Lafayette. In addition, his dad never lost to Lafayette! Joe
recalls that we beat them every year and only in his senior
year was it close — we tied 6-6! Unfortunately, Joe missed
the extra point in that game, the 100th Lehigh-Lafayette
football game, but Joe missed his extra point before the
Lafayette kicker missed his! "We now have a tradition that
every five years at reunion, we rekick the extra point with the
Lafayette crowd, and the -winner gets to say they won the
game until the next reunion." Unhappily, Joe reports they
won the last(1990)"extra point-off!"
Joe decided to join Phi Gam because it -was the best house
on the Hill and because several of his freshman friends were also
joining. Among them were Mike Yots, Thom Frazier, Dick
Rizzo and Jim Miller(a high school fnend from Johnstown).

Fiji in the Spotlight (continued from Page 3)
In 1970, Doyle Walton was born. And in .1974, Zachary
Walton was born. Over the years Joe had many opportunities to
pursue attractive jobs that required being away from home in
the evening. He declined all of them so he could be home to
help raise his children. It's one ofthe decisions he is happy he
made. Joe says: "It's trite to say it, but they do grow up fast,
and they do need a father. If1 could give one piece ofadvice on
parenting to any Fiji brother, it would be to spend as much
time with your kids as you can. They need it and you'll never
regret it. However,in my case, Karen deserves all the credit for
raising our sons to be productive people. With her help they
have grown and learned to become decent human beings."
Doyle graduated from Brovm University in 1992 in biomedical
engineering and is now attending Hahnemann Medical School
in Philadelphia. Zachary is in his second year at Harvard
University majoring in physics.
Since retuming to the Lehigh Valley in 1975, Joe has been
actively involved with Lehigh University and Phi Gam. He
actively in many Lehigh phonathons and has been an Asa
Packer Society member.
Joe has been on the Beta Chi Board ofTrustees for over 16
years, serving as secretary-treasurer for most of that time. Joe
emphasized how important fund raising is for the house, both
through gifts to Lehigh earmarked for Phi Gam and through
gifts to the Beta Chi Association directly. "The moneys raised
by the Beta Chi Association have allowed us to keep the
graduate brotherhood informed ofthe progress and needs of
the undergraduate chapter. This vital communication. The B.C.
Fiji, is our only link to most ofour graduate brothers. My
thanks and appreciation to all the brothers who contribute to

the Beta Chi Association each year." The range of gifts is very
wide, from $10 to $250,and the support is broad-based,
reflecting the generosity ofour brothers.
His college experience was enriched by the Beta Chi
Chapter ofPhi Gamma Delta, and he feels a debt to her.
Monetary gifts and service to Beta Chi are his "inadequate"
attempt to repay that debt to honor those who have gone
