1984 May Newsletter Theta Tau (Tennessee Tech)
FROM THE PRESIDENT
Dear Graduates,
Winter quarter was very exciting
and productive for Theta Tau. After
having announced to do “Even More
In 84” we set out to prove it with atop
four finish in all campus volleyball
and our fifth consecutive All-Sing
trophy. We also initiated three fine
gentlemen that we are very proud to
hail as Brothers. In addition, we also
selected a group of eleven beautiful
ladies to become little sisters.
Winter has passed and April
showers are bringing May flowers.
These May flowers mean only two
things to Theta Tau. Pig Dinner and
Fiji lsland! Pig dinner was held at the
Country Club with the keynote
address being given by Lee Schmidt
Archon, which was followed by the
annual scramble. It was once again
the “clash of the plaids.”
Shortly after Pig Dinner follows
Fiji Island. Wednesday May 16 slates
the second Annual Fiji Island
Tanning Contest. This year's
contest is heating up to include
more girls participating than before.
Party attendance is estimated to be
in excess of 600 people. After
coming down from the Tanning
Contest, Brothers will grab their
dates and head to Dale Hollow Lake
for a weekend of fun and sun.
Several brothers have already
rented houseboats for the weekend
(sounds like high-5 activity to me!)
While having our spring quarter
fun and enjoying our great
brotherhood, we are never forgetful
of the bright examples that have
made it all possible. Even though the
faces may change from time to time,
we are still the same hard working,
goal crunching Theta Tau. |
personally invite you back to YOUR
home
about old times and memories or
create new ones. Hope to see you
soon!
anytime you want to talk
Fraternally,
Jay Clark

Motivates Chapter
Theta Tau served as host to its
section's Field Secretary Mark
Wilkison (Vermont '83) during his
visit Feb. 23-27.
Mark arrived on Thursday to find
the chapter hard at work on their All-
Sing program. It was not an idle visit
as he helped out with choreography
as well as interjecting a motivational
word when needed. He was as proud
as the chapter was when the awards
were announced at the end of the
program.
The five days were not only a time
for us to get to know him, but a time
for him to make us strive to be the
best we can be and then work to
become better. ; .
Mark is from Shelton, Conn. He is
a brother from the Beta Upsilon
Chapter at the University of
Vermont. During his time in the
Southeast, he has visited 25
chapters.
While at Theta Tau, Mark talked to
all the committee chairmen and
officers and gave help where
needed. Wilkison said that “the
Cheney Cup is well within the
chapter's grasp." Lets see what
happens at Ekklesia.
We appreciate all of Mark's help
and guidence during his stay and
hope to see him back at Theta Tau
very soon. :
\r\nHouse Corp Makes Plans,
Elects Directors
The annual meeting of the Theta
Tau House Corporation was held on
May 5 in conjunction with Pig
Dinner. Jack Southerland,
President, chaired the meeting and
gave a report on purchase plans for
the present chapter house (see prior
issue) and also on the status of a
University developed fraternity row.
Lee Wray, out-going Vice-president,
presented the plans for reaching the
$8400 fund raising goal. The two
major activities are an “Evening of
Summer Stars” (see related article)
and “Change for the Best.” The
“Change” program consists of the
distribution of special jars in which
to collect change to all
undergraduates, graduates, and
other interested persons. These
persons will be asked to place
change in these special jars for a six
month period from May 5 (Pig
Dinner) to November 3 (homecom-
ing).
Following this portion of the
meeting, new members were
elected to the Board of Directors.
Those elected to three year terms
were Rex Welch ‘82 and Carl
Martin ‘83. Ken Sap ‘82 was
elected to fill out the two
years remaining on Lee Wray’s term
who was elected to serve as Purple
Legionnaire for the chapter. They
join Jack Southerland (two years
left), Russ Bradley (1 year left), and
Al Enochs (1 year left}. The Board
then met to elect officers. Those
elected for 1984-85 are President,
Jack Southerland ‘81; Vice-
President, Russ Bradley ‘81;
Secretary, Ken Sapp '82; Treasurer,
Al Enochs U.T. ‘76.
Fund Raising Dinner Planned for Summer
The end of summer will bring the
first major House corporation fund
raising event, “An Event of Summer
Stars,” an evening of dinner and
entertainment. The affair is
tentatively set for Saturday August
25 in Nashville (though an exact
location had not been finalized at
press time.) according to Lee Wray
’81, Summer Stars Chairman.
The evening will feature a
southern summer evening
atmosphere of casual conversation
and enjoyable entertainment.
Special invitation will be issued to
selected undergraduates, gradu-
ates, and friends of the chapter who
will provide various acts for the
evening. The program will include
song, dance, instrumentals, comedy
and drama.
The guest list of 400 is made up of
graduates, undergraduates, parents
and families, Nashville area Fiji’s,
“Not for College
the Headquarters staff, and friends,
both past and present. “We hope to
provide a classy, relaxing evening
for all of the people who have ever
been associated with Theta Tau
Chapter. The end of summer is
always such a great time to renew
old friendships before the hustle
and bustle returns to our lives,”
Wray said. “And there’s so much
talent in the chapter--we just
thought we'd throw it all together.”
Serving as subcommittee
chairmen for the affair are Russ
Bradley ’81, location; Ken Sapp 82,
program; and Rex Welch ‘82,
reservations. Wray emphasized
getting your reservations in as soon
as the invitation is received because
seating is limited.

\r\nGraduate Spotlight
Billy Joe Still Athletic
Brother Billy Joe “Il Never”
Worthington is presently teaching
Biology at a Junior High in
surburban Atlanta. Besides
teaching, Billy Joe coaches the
basketball and track teams. His
coaching expertise carried the
basketball team to an impressive
second place position in a Country-
wide tournament - the best record
for the school ever.
While at Tech, Billy Joe played a
part in both Fraternity and
University related activities. Within
the Chapter he was Social Chairman
and Fiji Island Chairman as well as
the recipient of the Fraternity
Scholarship Award. While having
fun as a busy brother, he was also a
varsity cheerleader, an ASB Senator
for the Department of Education,
and a member of Mortar Board.
Along with all of this, Billy Joe was
elected GreekGod by the sororities
during Tech’s Greek Week.
Not only did he coach his Junior
High School teams to soaring
heights but while at Tech, Billy Joe
coached the first ever School of
Nursing basketball team to win a
championship.
Billy Joe moved to Atlanta shortly
after his graduation from Tech with
a degree in secondary education in
biology.
Billy Joe continues to be a
functioning member of Phi Gamma
Delta through his support in
graduate activities such as Pig
Dinner.
Chapter Pays Tribute to P.L.
Over the past few years, Theta
Tau has been fortunate to have the
guidance and moral support of Jack
Lepp (Ill. ’41) as our Purple
Legionnaire. Jack accepted the task
when Phi Gam was first established
in Tech's campus. He has seen the
fraternity grow from the ground up
over the past five years and now
Jack has relieved his position to
graduate brothers from Tech’s own
chapter.
In honor of all the work and help
that he has given us over the years,
an annual Pig Dinner award has
been introduced. The Jack Lepp
Award, as it will be called, will be
given to an outstanding graduate for
his post-graduate work done with
the chapter. In honor of it’s first
presentation, this year two awards
were given. The recipients of this
year’s award were Jack Southerland
('81) and Lee Wray (81) for all the
work they have done with the
BCA/House Corporation.
In addition to this honor, it was
announced to all who had not heard
that Lee would serve as the new
Purple Legionnaire for the Theta
Tau Chapter. He has done extensive
work for the chapter as a graduate
and we hope to utilize him even
more now that he will be serving the
chapter in this new position.
In Winter 1984, Phi Gam added Little
Sisters to the chapter. They are:
(seated) Lauren Crowder, Beth
Casteel, Gina Patrick, Sherrie
Brown, Cindy Barnes, and Liz
McSpadden, (standing) Cindy
Martin, Leslie Latham, Libba
Kilgore, Keri Elrod, and Leah
