As a newly elected president, I am very excited about
the new year. At a recent IFC Awards Banquet, FIJIs
garnered a second place overall in the campus-wide
competition. We are now a truly strong chapter,
In closing, I extend my sincerest condolences for our
brothers at the Zeta Deuteron chapter(Washington and

We hope you will let us know if we can be of any help in

1 would also like to thank the old cabinet for their
tirelessjob. Brothers Strombom,Garlen,Jordan, White,
and Ward did an outstandingjob, and we can only hope
to match their effort.
Our Field Secretary, Mark Wilkison, recently made a
visit to our house. Brother Wilkison gave us much
encouragement and many new ideas, some of which
have already been implemented into our agenda. I
would like to thank Brother Wilkison for his efforts. He
is a fine man and I hope he returns to our house soon.
I hope to meet several Phi Gams from across the
country in New Orleans this summer. I would encourage
all our graduates to attend the Ekklesia(August 12-16),
John Edward Sivak, Warren, NJ.
John Bradford Snead, St. Louis, MO.
Alexander Andrew Tymchuck, Gainesville
Eric Andrew Walters, House Springs, MO.
These men fulfilled their pledgeship brilliantly and are
a welcome addition to our chapter.
Joining them this spring are the new initiates:
Darren Scott Yates, Rome
Mark Andrew Spears, Atlanta
Sandy Max Stephens, Newnan
These men also hold great promise towards fulfilling
the aims of Phi Gamma Delta.

\r\nA WORD WITH THE PURPLE LEGIONAIRE
Definite goals set
On March20th, 1983,James Doyle Hamil II(Georgia
Tech '81) was installed as the newest Purple Legionaire
of the Gamma Tau Chapter of Phi Gamma Delta.
Affectionately known as J.D., Mr. Hamil resides in
Atlanta with his wife Ann. Having graduated with a
degree in Building Construction,J.D. owns and manages
three businesses, of which Environmental Graphics
Systems is the principal company. The responsibility
and power inherent in keeping three companies running
wishes to achieve a goal,J.D. will put forth the necessary
efforts to reach that goal. It is evident that J.D. will
continue to be a major force in improving the quality of
fraternity life at Gamma Tau for some time to come.
Gamma Tau extends their gratitude.
smoothly might make an ordinary man's head swell, but
Jon Jenkins
J.D. modestly claims,"I don'tjust tell people what to do,
I sweep the floors and wash the windows, too.
J.D. is no stranger to responsibility and obligation,
two traits which are necessary for a Purple Legionaire.
Aside from holding the title of Recording Secretary
to be in the 2.7-2.8 range, and there's no reason for any
of the individual GPA's to be much lower than 2.0.
There is no question of J.D.'s dedication to the
chapter. His extensive service record proves that if J.D.
Fall rush Sept. 13-23
Rush is an important part of every chapter, and we
here at Gamma Tau are no exception. Graduating as
many fine men as we are this year makes rush just that
during his senior year, J.D. became a member of the
much more important. Fall Rush this year will run from
house corporation soon after his graduation, personally
overseeing the renovation of the house. In particular,
J.D. directed the landscaping efforts in the back yard
and built the barbeque grill himself. In recognition of his
contributions to the chapter, J.D. was presented the
Coulter Cup for his service in both ofthe last two years.
As Purple Legionaire, J.D. has definite goals for the
chapter. He would like to see an increase in the graduate
involvement with the chapter and an increase in the
degree to which the undergraduates involve the gradu
ates in the chapter activities. J.D. remarks,"For the past
Sept. 13 - Sept. 23. We will be having a variety of
activities during that time including band parties, river
outings, shrimp and casino night, theme parties, and a
spaghetti dinner cooked by some of our graduates.
As many have said many times. Phi Gam is not for
college days alone, and we hope this continues to be
two years I've won the award for the outstanding
graduate ofthe chapter. I've worked hard, especially the
first year, but it is no superhuman effort on my part.
That's rather distressing." He stresses that it will require
true. As rush chairman, I invite all graduates back to
visit and to help us with rush. If you know of any
freshmen or someone already at Tech that is Phi Gam
material, please fill out the enclosed form and send it to
me here at the house. Once more,I urge you to come by,
and we will appreciate any support and/or potential

This Spring Quarter, Gamma Tau tried a new
variation on an old idea in spring parties. This year the
brothers went on a three-day odyssey to Pensacola
Beach, PL. We chartered a bus for the round trip and
stayed in cottages directly upon historic and scenic
Pensacola Beach.
Friday night, we arrived in town and immediately set
out to light it up.
On Saturday, we spent the day at the beach catching
rays, catching frisbees, and catching plenty of glimpses
at the beach bunnies. Saturday evening featured a surf
and turf feast prepared on the beach, and the night was
capped off by a beach blast as the brothers, together
with all the local sun goddesses, partied in the sand.
The unique feature of this year's "Beach Release"
party was that unlike past years, the brothers did not
take dates with them. This removed many of the cost
barriers and other complications preventing many
brothers from participating in past years. We proved
that brothers can party with brothers, and with luck, stir
up some local action as well.
As you might have guessed, this year's "Beach
Release" party was designed as a substitute for the
former Island Parties that we used to have before the
landscaping of the backyard three years ago. This beach
trip is by no means considered a permanent substitute
for Island Party. The Island Party was a quarter-long
example of brothers working together and was a point
of pride within the chapter year-round. Over the past
three years, the undergraduates have tried three different
concepts to take the place of Island Party, yet have failed
to find a solution which can preserve our beautiful
backyard, and be satisfactory and practical all at the
same time.To this end, we invite all graduates and other
chapters to submit ideas and suggestions to:

FIJI has had one of its most successful seasons in
EDITOR'S NOTE
Dear Graduate Brothers:
As you well know, this newsletter has been out of
print for a good while now. But thanks to recent
upgrading of our graduate relations cotnmittee, we have
revived Gamma Tauk from its abode and have rekindled
the old spirit that made this a great newsletter.
As the newest editor of the Gamma Tauk, I have
committed myselfto producing one newsletter a quarter.
I assure every one of you that this newsletter will
continue to be printed on a regular basis. Ifthere are any
suggestions that you may have as to how I may improve
the newsletter or our graduate relations, please send
intramurals this year. Surprisingly enough, we started
offthe season winning our league in football and placing
second in the school championship. FIJI also placed
first in the cross country meet in the fall.
With continued success in winter, we won our league
in basketball and ultimate frisbee, going all the way to
the final four in the school competition in basketball.
We finished second in the winter wrestling meet.
During the spring, we have made two sets of playoffs
by going undefeated in biddy basketball and finishing
second in our league in softball.
