The Graduate News Publication
President's Report
Chi iota has continued to prosper
from the changes that were im
plemented in May of 1987. Progress
has continued in the areas of com
munity service, scholarship, and
overall chapter administration. Iam
pleased to announce that our chap
ter cumulative grade point average
has again increased for the fourth
semester in a row. We currently
rank a 3.812 out of 5.000, up from
a 3.800. Our goal is to surpass the
all-men's average this semester,
and with our current scholastic
program, this event appears likely.
Our effort in the area of commu
nity service has also been quite

None of our current success would
have even been attainable were it
not for his exceptional performance.
Needless to say, he has set a high
standard for future presidents to live
up to. His receiving of the Sawyer
Cup as "the Most Worthy Fiji" at last
year's Pig Dinner was especially
gratifying as one's efforts sometime
go unnoticed. His has been a most
challenging legacy to live up to.
I would also like to acknowledge
the recent appointment of Brother

I look forward to an opportu

thank you for the support you've
given us over the past year and a
half.

Shawn Kestler. Already we have
organized a blood drive, partici
pated in a food drive with the Boy
Scouts, and have spearheaded the
implementation of a "Greek student
patrol"to combat the recent rash of
sexual assaults that have been
occurring here on campus.
At this point Iwould again like to
acknowledge the time and effort
devoted to Chi lota by the members
of the Board of Control (Bill Golds
tein, John Phipps, Todd Dawson,
and Chris Moyer). I would like to
also announce the recent appoint
ment of Hank Walter (Michigan '85)
as our new Purple Legionaire.
Brother Walter currently is em
ployed by the University of Illinois
as Assistant to the Vice Chancel lor
for Student Affairs and is working
i
toward a Master's degree in public
administration. Under the direction
of Hank, the Cabinet has become
much stronger and the role of the
Board of Control has become much
looser.

Mort Weir Named Chancellor
Over the summer Mort Weir
(Knox '55) was named Chancellor
of the University of Illinois. The
Chancellor is the top administrator
for the campus and reports directly
to the president. To both recognize
and honor Brother Weir, we at Chi

graduate brothers know a little
about him. Thus, I did a little re
search and have put together a
short biography of his achieve
ments.
Mort is a Canton, Illinois native

The only bad thing to happen at
the 1988 Homecoming was the
28-21 loss of the Fighting lllini to
conference foe Michigan State. The
House Corporation walked away
from the meeting with the
undergraduate officers very
pleased. They felt the Chi lota
Cabinet had the house headed in
the right direction as all facets were
covered. House Corporation was
especially impressed with treasurer
Mike "Booger" Dolin's success, as
he has managed to stay on top of
the house finances very well. Also
at the House Corp. meeting it was
