From the Desk of the Chairman:
New Graduate Relations Program Needs Your Support!
Dear Brother.
Recently, the brothers and House Corporation of Phi Gamma
Delta at the UmverAtj? of Illinois have approved a new program
of communication with our membership. With over 1000 living
graduate brothers of Chi Iota, we realize the need to expand and
improve our graduate relations program.
In the past, communications among our graduates, and
between the chapter and graduates, have been sporadic and often
incomplete. We have lacked an organized program designed to
maintain frequent contact with members after graduation.
To rectify this, we made changes not only to our graduate rela•Vns program, but also to our existing support systems for the chapitself. This newsletter is basic to providing better news coverage
of the chapter, graduate activities and all brothers of Chi Iota.
Our plans to involve more graduate brothers with the chapter
is realized with the creation of a Board of Chapter Advisers. This
group of local brothers lends support and advice to the chapter
on rush, scholarship and the day-to-day running of the house.
We are here to provide guidance and ideas to help keep Chi Iota
going strong as it enters its second century of existence.
We hope these changes are appealing to you and that you will
take an active part in helping us make it a success. How?
Chi Iota Goes Substance-Free;
In three ways. First, the success of the newsletter will depend on
the graduate news it contains. We need your news and the news of
your brothers. Enclosed you will find a news form that will provide
us with this information. Take the time now to fill it out and return it
in the enclosed envelope. The next issue will include this news.
Second, let us have your full support for get-togethers that will be
planned and promoted in the future. These will provide opportuni
ties to meet with classmates and friends. Also, let us know if you are
plannmg any special fraternity events that we may include m the
newsletter to help you get the word out to other brothers.
Finally, we hope you will give us a small amount of financial
support to help assure the program's lasting existence. Contribu
tions received will be used for the graduate relations program and
will support other activities of the alumni association. Suggested
amounts are included, but be assured any contribution you may care
to give toward this program will be greatly appreciated.
We sincerely hope that through the combined efforts of
undergraduate and graduate brothers, this program will be a
success by making the alumni association a more active and
important organization for all Chi Iota brothers.

Chi Iota had its earliest beginnings in April 1892, when the plan
of having a chapter at the University of Illinois was discussed in
the Alpha Deuteron (Illinois Wesleyan) chapter correspondence
in the Phi Gamma Delta quarterly. OI Illinois it is said, "It has
been newly opened to fraternities, and we would do well to make
some effort to establish a chapter there."
According to a chapter history written in 1935, the Iirst
attempt to bring Phi Gamma Delta to Illinois was initiated by
then-faculty member Dr. David Kinley (Johns Hopkins), who
would later become the president of the University of Illinois. In
1895 the group of men began meeting. They called themselves
the Leigh Club after Charles W. Leigh, one of the organizers.
and were advised by Kinley and Dr. Arthur Daniels, who would
also become a University of Illinois president.
Despite the positive signs given in 1892, the group's petition
for a charter was rejected by the fraternity's 1896 meeting.
Noting that the university was not a satisfactoiy location for a
chapter, the founders were sent back to Champaign. This was
not satisfactory, however, to Kinley.
Kinley was apparently so enraged by the rejection that he
attended the 1897 fraternity meeting in Nashville. Having
discussed the causes of both the Leigh Croup, as well as the
university, the convention approved the petition that summer and
the chapter was installed October 15 of the same year, originally
as Iota Sigma.
The original petition for a charter included 22 men; 16 were
initiated in October 1897 at the Beardsley Hotel. Four others
were later initiated from the original group.
