\r\nA Message From The House Corporation
J. Scot Jennings (Pi Sigma '86)
Pi Sigma Association President
Brothers, I am going to bring you up to date on what has transpired with the House Corporation during the
past year of 1996, inform you of several changes that have taken place, and review what future projects are on the
table for 1997. I believe with your continuing help and support and the Pi Sigma Association continuing to
aggressively perform fund raisers , the Phi Gamma Delta Chapter House at 4725 Wallingford Street will be in
existence at the University of Pittsburgh for a long time to come!!
We have experienced a change in board members due to two of our Brothers assuming different positions
within the fraternity. Mike Kasimirsky (Pi Sigma '91) has accepted the position offinancial advisor to the
undergraduate treasurer. On the graduate trustee board andMark Jennings (Pi Sigma '81) has agreed to become
involved as the Physical Plant/Special Projects Manager. Mark served as the Purple Legionnaire back in the mid 80 s.
Our Graduate Educational Advisor position was well represented last term by Damian Zampogna (Pi Sigma 96). This
role was created by our sanctions from the University and it involved working withthe University and
tmdergraduates on anon stop basis. I would hke tothank Damian personally for his efforts and a job well done!
This term the position is being filled by Chris Nestor (Pi Sigma '96). Another non Pi Sigma FIJI has recently offered
to get involved with our newsletter and that is Pete Seppi from Ohio State. His goal is to send out 3newsletters for us
a year which will greatly improve our communication with every brother out there!
The Pi Sigma Association completed several projects this past year due tothe generosity of our graduates.
had astorm window installed on the stained glass window at the top of the staircase to protect it. Onthe first

had the hardwood floors professionally refinished in the library and the trophy room, in the basement we adde some
new barstools and hadthe pooltable renovated with new felt, bumpers, and pockets & the House Corporation
purchased some new entry room furniture to make the house look good for future rushees!! The projects current y
under way include installing anew set of master keyed locks on all of the bedrooms, and finally after years of tal ng
about it, a laundry is being installed in the room off of the kitchen!!
The projects we have on the table for the upcoming year so far include; replacement of the front porch steps,
lining the fireplaces in the entry room and TV room to make them safe to burn in, replacing the remaining windows
on the first floor that were not done as part of aprevious project, replacing the steel banister going to the second floor
from the entry room main staircase, replacing carpeting in the rooms which has been insince 1977, updating the
bathrooms and plumbing, and replacing the dance floor &bedroom drop ceilings as needed. All of the improvernents
that have taken place at the house over the past seven years have been funded almost entirely through the financial
support of loyal FIJIS. The house would have been condemned if it wasn't for your generous and continued support
however last year we experienced asignificant drop off in donations. Iam asking you to ple^e keep your gifts coming
and let me assure you that every penny counts and is put to good use! Ikicked off this years fundr^sing y™ ^g the

I would like to congratulate the entire undergraduate chapter for enduring the hardships and sanctions that
were placed upon us by the University of Pittsburgh. Our latest meeting with the University wentvery well andthe
Chapter has earned our praise for hanging in there and showing us the meaning of persistence!
In conclusion, I would like to remind you that the Pi Sigma Association meets the first Wednesday of every
month at the house at 7:00 p.m. The meetings usually last 1-1/2 hours since we review the Associations current issues
and also advise and review the undergraduates current state of affairs. During the past year we have had several
graduate brothers in attendance which included John Sheppard,, Marc Alaia, Tim Reitmeyer, Steve Nolan, Ben
Wallander, Dave Fisher, Dave Wissinger, Mike Kacimirsky, Mel Eperthener, Rob Johnston, Gary Hirsch, Pete Seppi,
MarkJennings, Harry Ingram & Harry Montgomery. It shouldbe no surprise to you that our new graduate trustees
came out of this group! We have started a new tradition with our meetings because every othermonth we buy pizza!
So hopefully if you are thinking about getting involved please join us at the meeting and have some pizza with us! I
am personally issuing you an invitation to attend one ofour meetings soon! I am looking forward to working with
our undergraduates as hopefully they will be getting permission to rush new members again. We have not been
allowed to rush since last fall so it is a critical time ahead. Please joinme in congratulating the undergraduates once
again for hanging in there when times have been tough and if you have ever considered getting involved with the
Chapter nowis the time to give something back to the Fraternity that gave you so much! As always I am mighty
proud to be a third generation Brother of the Pi Sigma Chapter of Phi Gamma Delta.
Graduate Educational Advisor's Report
Christopher A. Nestor
Graduate Educational Advisor 1997
Greetings from Pittsburgh! I hope that the NewYear has provided you with good health andgood fortune. For
those of you who do not know me, my name is Christopher A. Nestor '96. I recently graduated this past December and
took on the position of Graduate Educational Advisor. What isa Graduate Educational Advisor you may ask? Well, I was
placed here by the Graduate Trusts as partof our sanctions to be a live in advisor and a liaison between thegraduates and
the undergraduates. Furthermore, my job entails monitoring and facilitating the scholastic and leadership development of
our undergraduate brothers. I also work with the graduates and undergraduates in planning seminars, retreats, guest
speakers, and chapter goal setting. Since I am a past president, I have taken time aiding the new cabinet and making their
transition into office easier.
Scholastically, I organized a time management seminar in which a guest speaker from theuniversity's Learning
Skills Center came and gave a presentation. This was very helpful toall that attended. I have also made it apoint to sit
down one-on-one with many of the brothers and go over what their plans are for the future. During these conferences I
have tried to advise and help them in any way to promote success. I think that these have aided the chapter and will ensure
that we score above the All-Men's Average again.
Another part of my job has been to plan philanthropic activities for the chapter. This semester we participated in
the Salvation Army's Hot Meals for the Homeless where we served for to people onthe Northside ofPittsburgh. All that
participated said that it was avery self-satisfying experience. We also have cleaned up our adopt ahighway program and
many other projects... (see community service report)
Overall, I feel thatthe Graduate Educational Advisor position has been very beneficial to our Fraternity in these
trying times. As the GEA, I have always been there as sort of abig brother... to answer questions and advise, as aresult,
this chapter has run more smoothly. Fiji is getting primed for next semester and cannot wait to be arecognized Fraternity
again. The desire and commitment is here and you can be proud to call all of these men your brothers, as am I. Good luck
to all in your future endeavors.
\r\nGraduate House Manager's Report
Mark Jennings '81
Dear Brothers, I am sorry that all of you did not have the opportunity to attend the Norris Pig Dinner this year I missed
your friendship and companionship and your greatest loss was missing my insight insightful and informative presentation on the
state of the union... I mean state of the house and its greatness.
Gentlemen it is time... time to invest in our beautiful home, andI do mean our home. Phi Gam has given so much to so
many and one incredible consistency is the experience college fraternity provides in its academics, social, athletics and ritual but
often the strongest memories of our fraternity in our minds is the house... John Sheppard s, Howard Scott sand Harry
Montgomery's house, Mike Kasmirsky, Dave Dortenzo's house, the Pezze, the Walters, the Conners the Wissinger and Wallander
family's house, the Jennings brother's house, Tom Halls, Rich Ledonnes, Ron PuntUs, Jake Jacobys, Doug Spatz and GUes
Grabiaks house, the Reitmeyers house, Dave Forti, Adam Kucea, Chris Nestors house... and now going into the next century the
current brotherhood made up of 22 remarkable men are carrying on the pride and tradition in our house.
No matter what your memories are, they occurred at 4725 Wallingford Street... and shall be there forever if we support
this awesome facility and our undergraduate brothers continuously in this extremely challenging time.
In my super computer Ifigured since the last time we renovated the house in the Summer on 1978 with the guid^ce of...
yes... Gary the stamina man Hirsch... with approximately 20 men taking showers only 180 days ayear the bath facilities that are
in dire need of overhaul would have handled 73,000 showers (conservatively)... afew more than the residential average.
The time is NOW to provide excellent living accommodation for our brothers, so they may enjoy and market our great
fraternity as one of the leadership and respect in lieu of the large party fireball of old Without the wear and te^ of the large
gatherings, this house will last another 100 years (see deed dated 1919 to Roland McCrady and subsequently to Pi Sigma in 1921) I
will keep you informed as to the date of the building permit when found which seems to eon or aroun

\r\nUndergraduate President's Report
Ryan Sweeney
Undergraduate President Phi GammaDelta
Thispast year our undergraduate Pi Sigma
brothers have accomplished numerous achievements. As
f
you may or may not know we have had to endure some
difficult times this past year and we are ready to turn
over a new leafthis coming Autumn. However, just
because the University said we were not allowed to do
certain things, this did not stop us from being a very
productive brotherhood. Here are just a few of the
many goals we have fulfilled. Scholarship is the number
one priority we set for ourselves this year and we met
this goal head on. Ten out of our twenty-two brothers
attained a 3.0 or above this past fall. This is the highest
percentage we have had in years. Campus involvement
was also a top priority. We have had a brother, Roger
lee appointed to the Pitt Program council Executive
Board. Also two of our brothers, Jerry Klayman and
Scott Coleman are currently running for IFC executive
board positions. Jerry is also in the running for an Allocations Chair position.
Philanthropy projects in the community were also at the top of our agenda. We have run a food and clothing drive for
the Salvation Army. We have also participated in a local Pittsburgh soup kitchen. This is in addition to cleaning our stretch of
highway nearMonroeville. One addition that we have made internally to the house is that we have added an Administrative
Assistant to our executive board. This position was added to help all positions of the board with any problem they may have and
be there to help in any decision making that needs done. Tony Freeh isthe first person to fill this position and has donean
outstanding job so far.
All these projects have kept us very busy this past year. We have managed to be a very productive, resourceful and
unified brotherhood... One in which you can say are still proud to be a part of.
Scholarship Winners!!!
With the Pi Sigma Educational Foundation's generosity and large bank account, all of the Undergraduate Brothers
have beenworking diligently to try to win one of the manyscholarships offered by the Educational Foundation. The
following list shows Brothers who won the scholarships last Autumn and Spring, and the winnings they received. A big
thanks goes to the Brothers on the Educational Foundation and all Brothers who have donated to this excellent fund! Keep
up the great work Brothers!!!

\r\nNorris Pig Dinner 1997
Tony J.Freeh '99
The 79th annual Norris Pig Dinner of the Pi
Sigma Chapter was held on Saturday, March 15th. An
event that turned out to be very enjoyable as well as
informative. The keynote speakerof the evening was J.
Dean Mosher from the University of Idaho '49. He is
presentlyan Attorney in northern Virginia, not to
mention a SectionCHef of that region. He also served
as a board member of the arkonite. He spoke of the
state of the present Pittsburgh Chapter, risk
management and it's importance as well asthe ideals and
the quahty ofleadership that all members ofthe Phi
Gamma Delta Fraternity should strive for.
The night was also very beneficial to the
undergraduate and graduate brother who received
awards. The Senior Scholar award was presented to
Christopher A. Nestor '96 and the Junior Scholarship Award was given toJames A. Ketterer '98. Other awards
presented were... The Jim Mapes Award to Andrew H. Martin and David W. Forti, Most Outstanding Graduate to
David F. Wissinger '89 for his active help in restoration of the Pi Sigma Chapter in the past year, Nathamel Raymond
Savage Award for the undergraduate who embodies the ideals of Phi Gamma Delta through campus activities was
presented to Gerald S. Klayman '98
Among the reports that were given concerning the house and the present state ofthe PiSigma Chapter were.
J. Mark Jennings '82, informed the brothers that renovations that are needed on the house are presently imderway.
Projects that are underway will continue through out the remainder of the semester and into the Summer to insure
that the house will be in prime condition for Fall rush. Ryan P. Sweeney '99, the present Undergraduate President,
informed those attending of the chapter's good standing and that some additions have been made to better serve the
brothers at this present time. Christopher A. Nestor '96 was appointed the Graduate Educational Advisor of the
house, and Anthony J. Freeh '99 was appointed Administrative Assistant of the Executive Board. President Sweeney
also stated that the next semester is looking very promising for adding new members to the fraternity.
Brother Lee "Movin' On Up"
Roger K. Lee '99
Recently I have been appointed to an executive board position on the Pitt Program Council, or PPC, for the
1997-98 academic school year. I was surprised and honored that I was offered aposition, because very few board
members leave every year and there is fierce competition for the job. As an Executive Board member, I will be the
Director of one of the PPC's 9committees. Iwill also be intensely involved in events which the other committees
organize. The Pitt Program Council is one of the largest organizations at the University of Pittsburgh. Itselects and
produces over 200 of the events on campus, such as guest lectures, homecoming festivities, films, and billiards
tourn^ents. The PPC also coordinates Spring Break travel programs, provides non-credit low-cost courses, and
coordinates the annual Bigelow Bash. With my new position, Iwill be in aposition to help my brothers become more
involved on campus.

In keeping with the values of our fraternity, the
brothers have come together to serve the community. In
September we participated in the Pittsburgh Project,
where we worked to beautify om* fair city.
In October, we organized a clothing drive to
benefit the Salvation Armyof Pittsburgh. Led by •
Damian Zampogna, we collected over 15 large bags, full
of clothing for donation. Later in the semester, we led a
food drive that asked for donations from North Oakland
and campus commimities. The food drive was a success
and with the help of the Greater Pittsburgh Food Bank,
every brother went home for the hohdays knowing that
he had helped to brighten the season for those who are
less fortunate.
The Brotherhood came together to clean our section of
Pennsylvania Interstate 376 near the Edgewood/Swissvale exit in November. The 18 brothers who went out gathered
over 50 bags of garbage, to beautify our section of the road.
In the Spring semester we have continued on our theme of community involvement by voltmteering our time
at a soup kitchen on the North Side of Pittsburgh.
As you can see the brothers are serious about giving back to the community. Already for the next semester
we have been in contact with Habitat for Humamty about a possible project. I would also hke to ask that anyone
who knows of any Pittsburgh area charities that wouldbenefit from our service to call me at (412) 682-1778.
Rush Fiji
The t-shirt in the picture below says it all. We all know rushing is the life blood of our fraternity. With all
the hard work and effort put forth to get the house in great shape, there is one lastthing to do... Fillit with quahty
men. If you know of any incoming freshman that posses some of the qualities of model Phi Gam's, Please contact me
at 800-487-1879. We would like to extend a warm welcometo any quality young man looking to learn more about

I was recruited by Scot Jennings and Gary Hirsch to give what I could. I am a Pittsburgh native and
resident, but attended Ohio State for 5 glorioxis years. While there I was a proud member of the Omicron
Deuteron chapter ofPhi Gamma Delta. I wanted to give back to Fiji in any way I could, but as it is more
convenient for me to interact with the Pi Sigma chapter, I have chosen to get involved locally.
After attending one ofthe monthly board meetings, I could see that this group of graduate and
undergraduate brothers were on a mission. The progress made by these individuals inthe last few months
has been nothing short of incredible. Lets just say... these brothers are working very hard to keep the Fiji
tradition strong in Pittsburgh.
As editor of The Panther Fiji, I look forward to Publishing at least 3newsletters per year. The
previous editors, Chris Zampogna '95 and Dave Forti '92, are going to be atough act to follow, so any help
would be greatly appreciated. If you have news, announcements, suggestions, or pictures that you would
like to see in future Panther Fiji newsletters... please contact me at 800-487-1879 between the hours of 7:30

\r\nEducational Foundation Report
David W. Foiti '92
The last five years have been characterized by a period of rapid change for fraternities around the countryandat Pi
Sigma. Long gone are the days of wet rush and open parties that characterized thefraternity system in this country since the
1950's. Many people view these changes as a threat to the vitality of the fraternal system, however, the members of the Pi Sigma
Educational Foundation see these changes as anopportunity for the continued growth and success ofPi Sigma.
The "new fraternal order" has as its key element the same trait that has characterized Phi Gamma Delta since 1848 -
friendship. Most ofus recall the lifelong friendships we cultivated at Pi Sigma as our strongest memories of4725 Wallingford
Street. When coupled with a responsible social schedule and a commitment to academic achievement, the opportunity to pledge
Pi Sigma offers Pitt undergraduates tremendous opportunities not available in other social organizations. The Pi Sigma
Educational Foundation was founded over 40 years ago by brothers desiring to help brothers by providing scholarships tothose
who performed well academically. The scholarship funds are currently under the professional investment management ofthe Phi
Gamma Delta Educational Foundation, but the use of the funds is dictated solely by acommittee ofPi Sigma graduates and used
solely for the benefit ofour chapter and our undergraduate members.
While most national fraternities have scholarships, ourchapter is one of the few chapters in the nation to have a
scholarship program exclusively for the benefit ofits chapter members. It is unique and something we should all be proud of.
The scholarship program could also be asignificant competitive advantage in the new fraternal order in that we will be able to
attract undergraduates interested in taking advantage ofboth the social and educational advantages Pi Sigma has to offer.
Last year we were able to subsidize a portion ofthe costs incurred by the Chapter to send representatives to the Ekklesia
and to award 9scholarships to our undergraduate brothers. Next year we will award 16 scholarships with an aggregate value of
$4,000, and help tosend our brothers to the Fiji Academy. We anticipate increasing the amount ofthe scholarships annually
based on donations and investment performance.
I would like to thank Brothers Richard M. Fusting '95, Robert W. Saunders '79, Steven M. Klein '71, Dr.James P. Miller
43, Samuel B. Frazier '49, George Taylor IV '61 and William L. Lowman '77 for their generous donations to ourscholarship
funds. I would also like to thank Brothers J. Scot Jennings '86, Gary W. Hirsch "73, Mel Eperthener, Harry M. Montgomery, Jr.
52, Robert M. Johnston '90, John D. Sheppard '44, David F. Wissinger '89 and Edward L. Graf '60for serving on the Board of Pi
