Beta Chi Voted
Best Fraternity at Lehigh
For the first time ever, Fiji won the Quay Cup, which is awarded
by the Interfratemity Council to the "most outstanding men's
fraternity at Lehigh." Winning this award did not really come as
a surprise for us because for the past few years, we have been
watching other fratemities win awards for things we do better.
We documented the things that we have been doing, and we
were rewarded with the trophy for our living room.
The award was judged on criterion such as fratemity educa
tion, scholarship, membership recruitment, alumni relarions,
campus involvement, community service and chapter manage
ment. We were able to show outstanding activities or achieve
ments in each of those categories. We have monthly educational
programs to address important topics such as alcohol abuse,
sexual harassment, date rape, etc. We were in the top third of all

fraternities academically and in the top five in terms of membership
recruitment numbers. Alumni relations was judged on our news
letter, pig dinner and pledge letters. Our membership provides
campus leadership, with several brothers holding officer positions
in a wide variety of campus organizations. For community

service, we continue to do our annual Luigi Fiji spaghetti dinner to
rai.se money for a local charity. This is the thitd year we have
sponsored this event. Chapter management was judged on our
organizational management and goal-setting principals.
We also won the John Templeton McCarty Chapter Pro
ficiency Award and a Scholarship Recognition Award at this past
summer's Ekklesia in Kansas City. There are a lot of different
aspects of living in a fratemity. At Beta Chi, we have made a
successful effort to make our fratemity more than a place to
develop friendships and have fun parties. For our efforts, we
have the honor of being recognized as the model for the 27
other fraternities on campus to follow.
Mark your calendars!
The annual Lehigh/Lafayette football contest will be held
on November 19, 1994,at 1:00 p.m. This year's game will
be at Lafayette's Fisher Field in Easton. Parking will be
available outside Fisher Field, however the gates will close
at2:00 p.m.,so please be on time. We hope to see you there!
Alumni and friends are also welcome to return to the Hut
for cocktails and a buffet dinner beginning at 6:00 p.m.
Plan to join us!

Welcome
AT Beta Cm
Our Newest Brothers!
The men in Beta Chi this past spring carried on the tradition of
dedication to scholarship. Ofthe 43 undergraduate brothers
living on campus,23 surpassed a 3.0 CPA. In addition to
having more than halfthe house earn over a 3.0, we were proud
to have eight brothers achieve dean's list status, which is an
honor granted to those who surpass a 3.5 CPA. Those brothers
included Josh Fiske '95, Mike Gerhardt '96, Lee Gold '94,
Todd Goldberg '94, J.R. Gulka '96, Dave lanetta '96, Keith
McDonald '96 and Jordan Rosenthai '95.
The house is doing as much as possible to encourage aca
demic growth and success. As a house rule, we will not allow
anyone with below a 2.0 GPA to pledge the fiatemity. As a
whole, the house finished ninth out of the 28 houses on the

This past April 30, at 6:00 p.m. in Rathbone Hall on the
Lehigh campus, our latest Pig Dinner began with a warm,
friendly and enjoyable cocktail hour. About 9:00 p.m., with the
singing of"By the Light of Delta Star," it ended. Another year,
another gathering of Fijis and another night ofrenewed fnendships, old stories and an ever-present reminder of the meaning
ofthe phrase "friendship, the sweetest influence."
Slightly more than 100 graduates and undergraduates
attended, wth many classes represented. Steve Mock '78 was
oiu" gracious master of ceremonies. Our guest speaker Bill
Hittinger'44 as well as Frank Dunigan '44, Dave Gearhart'44
and Bud Johns '49 led the alumni turnout with Brother
Dunigan kissing the pig and Brother Gearhart giving the
invocation. Brother Hittinger's remarks were very timely.
Many thanks to Bill Read '95 for helping to plan, organize
and see that the dinner went smoothly.

If you haven't attended a Pig Dinner in recent years, call
some guys from your class and make plans to come next April.
These dinners are first-class, well-planned and, most importantly,
done in good taste. Ask some brothers who have been to these
affairs. We are entertaining the idea ofinviting wives and/or
families next year. Let us know what you think ofthis idea. But
be sure to mark your calender now for Pig Dinner 1995 to be
held on Saturday, April 29, at 6:00 p.m. in Rathbone Hall, and
look forward to an enjoyable evening!
