26th Anniversary Pig Dinner:
Come to See Our New Home
By Dave Watson (79)
I don't know about the rest of you, but Sunday morning, March 13, 1993, when I looked
outside my window and saw 4 inches of snow,I was depressed. I soon realized that I was going to
miss the official 25th Pig Dinner Anniversary. Even though I attended the unofficial official 25th Pig
Dinner Anniversary later, I felt like I still missed a lot of people that I haven't seen in a while.
What I'm getting at is if you've got any free time or are starting to arrange your schedule for
April, mark down April 23rd to stop in and see the new house. If you go to Athens, you won't see
the rail where Poon almost fell to his death. Thank goodness he was with his good friend Evan
Williams that night and didn't feel a thing. You won't see the steps where Conyers' finest attorney
Steve Fathom used to step drive. You won't see the railroad ties that almost mined the career of
Coach Growers, Atlanta businessman Monty Allen, and yours tmiy. You won't see the kitchen
where Carl Calendar (President at the time) used to open up Idi's late night kitchen. You won't see
the TV room where Quin and Petey Berta used to memorize afternoon TV shows. You won't see the
roof top where General Rusty Blair bombed the Jewish sorority on social night or even the tree
where Rusty Blair used to give pledge interviews. You won't see bathrooms with fist holes in the
wall depending on whether or not it was a good night. You won't see the nasty, and I mean nasty.
Officers' Quarters (you officers remember that bathroom). You won't see the roof water where
Commodores' Ball got started.
What you will see is a stmcture that will represent thousands of young men for a number of
years to come and a house that Fill's young and old. Kappa Deuteron graduates, other chapter
graduates, parents, friends, and family will be extremely proud of. I could tell you how hard Cale
has worked, how many people have pitched in, the number of letters we've seen out, the drawings
that have changed an innumerable amount of times, the number of phone calls we've made, the
number of people we've irritated time and time again, but nothing I could teU you will prepare you
for how amazed you will be when you see this new house. Being on the building committee for a
number of years, I have been a lot closer to this new house than most of you. When I recently
visited Athens, I was stunned how our little lodge has disappeared and how this magnificent
structure is in its place. Please take the time Saturday to join us at Pig Dinner and visit themew
house. You'll realize that every penny you've given was well worth it.
Also, if you are planning to come up or not, please keep in mind items you may have for the
Pig Dinner auction (i.e. tickets: Braves, Symphony, Chastain; discounts or passes to retail center;
does your workplace have a product you can donate? etc.). Last year, we raised over $3500 for the
house fund.
Looking forward to seeing each of you.

Purple Legionnaire's Report
By Jere W. Morehead (Ga. Faculty)
This month marks my fifth anniversary
of service as the Purple Legionnaire at
Kappa Deuteron. Despite the difficulty
our chapter has faced during that time of
operating in a crumbling physical stmcture, our brotherhood remains strong. The
values of Phi Gamma Delta that you hold
so dear have survived the decline and fall
of the old lodge at 3 Cloverhurst. Under
the able leadership of another group of
outstanding officers this year, Kappa Deu
teron can look forward to continued suc
cess as we move into our new house.
For those of you who have not had the
opportunity to return to visit the chapter
Building up: the new house under construction
recently, I want to share with you my
observations about the current quality of the undergraduate brotherhood. Of course, the chapter's accom
plishments as a whole continue to be very impressive. We placed second last year in the Cheney Cup
Competition and first this past fall in the IFC academic standings compiled for both brothers and pledges.
We also continue to excel in other areas and again won the first place prize in athletics among all
UGA fraternities. Our record of university and community service allowed us to place in the Baker Social
Service Cup Competition. Your undergraduate brothers managed all of these accomplishments and still
enjoyed an active social calendar as well.
The Chapter's quality is no less impressive when you examine it from the standpoint of individual
accomplishments. For example, the prestigious Jasper Dorsey Outstanding Junior and Senior Awards given
by the Alumni Society went to our brothers this year. Both Scott Self ('94) and Alex Hill ('95) won these
highly competitive awards. Blake White ('94) and Eric Overby ('94) joined Scott and Alex this year in also
being chosen to participate in the renowned Richard Russell Leadership UGA program. We also continue to
be very well represented in virtually every major honorary on this campus.
Kappa Deuteron also remains an active force in campus politics with the election just a few weeks
ago of Brian Smith ('95) as the IFC Vice President. Several brothers also serve on the University Council
and in the Student Government Association. You have to look no further than Drew Wade ('97), one of our
newest brothers, to find evidence that our great tradition will endure. Drew, a Foundation Fellow, was
recently profiled in the Georgia Alumni Record as one of the top freshmen on this campus.
A chapter is only as good as its weakest link. I am pleased to report to you that our undergraduate
brotherhood is sturdy in every respect. In almost the wink of an eye, we all will be celebrating a new
century. I encourage you to contact our Rush Co-Chairmen, Nathan Ballard ('96) or Carlton Guthrie ('97),
if you have any rush recommendations to provide as we look forward to that future together. Please stop by
the new house this spring. You will be pleased and proud of what you find in our undergraduate brothers!

RUSH 1994
By Drew Wade ('97)
With the house now a showplace rather than an eyesore, we have high hopes for rush in the
coming year. Last year's Fall Rush was a success greatly because of the use of spring and summer
functions, for which graduate support was a great help. As a result, we successfully rushed a pledge
class of twenty-one men. Again this winter we pledged three fine men to carry on our tradition of
greatness. Although rush has indeed been very successful during the last year. Rush Co-Chairmen
Nathan Ballard ('96) and Carlton Guthrie ('97) are beginning to work already to ensure that rush this
year will be an even greater success.
No rush, however, can work correctly without contact with men who might have an interest
in joining. Our undergraduate brothers work to find such men coming from their hometowns, as
well as those already on campus. Nevertheless, we ask for your help as graduates and members of
the communities from which these men come to campus. We would like to know of any quality men
you know who will be coming to the University, or perhaps that are already here: sons, nephews,
friends of the family, church members, etc. Since social functions this spring, including the Jock
Connell Golf Classic and Native Weekend, will double as rush functions to meet prospective
rushees, the earlier that we can make contact with them, the better. So if you can think of someone,
please fill out the form at the bottom of this page, fold it in half, staple and stamp it, and drop it in the
mail.
Graduate involvement in last year's summer rush was a great asset that we would like to
continue and increase. If you would like to get further involved with rush this summer,to help with
the arrangements for an event(or perhaps host one), please contact either of the Rush Co-Charrmen,
Nathan Ballard (706) 613-2763, or Carlton Guthrie (706) 354-8096. Any help that you can offer
will be much appreciated.

The Gavel Report
By Willie Phalen ('94) Chapter President
Greetings and salutations! Along with the new year, a new cabinet, and a new house, here is a new
gavel report. As you can see (look down),I knew from the beginning this was going to be a long year. As a
senior, I'm not sure I still have the energy to keep up with this new crop of young recruits, but like all good
FUI's I shall persist.
But seriously, I'm tremendously excited and even fairly energetic, for a man of twenty-two, to once
again hold office and remain an undergraduate for just a little while longer. I can think of no greater experi
ence for a young man entering college than membership in Phi Gamma Delta, and I can think of no better time
to be in the chapter than right now. As Dan "Ringlow" Lowring would say," The Purple Machine is rolling!"
And rolling right along it truly is. Last fall saw the largest rush in recent Kappa Deuteron history, and
I ensure you that they were all quality men. The Xi Triton pledge class boasted the highest grades of any
pledge class on campus. But, the brothers were not to be outdone, for they too eclipsed all other fraternities
scholastically in the Fall. Academics, however, was not the sole facet in which Kappa Deuteron excelled.
The chapter once again made a strong showing in intramural athletics and campus activities. Enough about
what we have done, the question remains,"What will we do?"
I believe the Cheney Cup is once again within our grasp. Last year Kappa Deuteron showed strongly
with a second place finish, but now we just need a little push in the right direction and we'U be there. That
little push may be realized in the form of the new house. I would like to personally thank all those who gave
to the house fund for making the dream of a new house a reality. With the help of all of you, the graduates of
Kappa Deuteron, the chapter now has a place to be proud of and call home, and possibly the catalyst for greater
things in the future.
But, I admonish you brothers, graduates and undergraduates alike, to remember that now is not the
time to rest on our laurels. Though the road to our current position has indeed been long and a bit bumpy (not
unlike Poon's Crossing), we must all persist. The house must not become an end in itself, but should instead
become a means to a greater end. I can think of no greaterjoy than for my (future) son to become a brother in
the best fraternity on campus.

The 1994 Norris Pig
By Alex Hill ('95)
Our upcoming 26th Anniversary Norris Pig Dinner on April 22-23 pror
event which I am sure none of you will want to miss. The highlight of the weekend's activities
will be the formal dedication of our new chapter house — an occasion which everyone has been
anxiously awaiting for years. I know that all graduates will want to retum to Athens to see what
truly is the finest fraternity house on our campus.
By now, you should have all received a letter outlining the activities occurring throughout the
weekend. Au open house will be held Friday afternoon for University faculty and community
leaders. A formal ceremony will be held that night with plenty of time later for hanging out with
the brothers. Tee times for anyone who wants to play golf will be set up for Saturday morning.
An auction similar to the one we had last year will take place at the house around noon. We have
some great items
-'
to auction off including memorabilia from Jack Nicklaus, Payne Stewart, and other famous Fill's.
In addition, all of the graduates who have helped to make the new house possible will be honored.
The day's activities will conclude with our dinner at the Holiday Inn, featuring former Executive
Director BUI Zerman as our speaker.
The undergraduates are extremely excited about this year's Pig Dinner. We expected close to
200 people at last year's snowed-out dinner, and I know we will surpass that figure with great
support this year. This will be one of the most memorable events in the life of our chapter, and I
know you won't want to miss it. I hope that you will contact all of your pledge brothers and
encourage them to attend. See you on the 23rd!
