UPSILON ALPHA FINISHES A GREAT YEAR
Dear graduate brothers.
Greetings from Upsilon Alpha. I
know it seems like it has been a while
since you got a Campanilla from us,
but it is out now, and we hope you like
it. Things have been going great for us
down here in Tucson. In the fall of
1994, we took 49 outstanding men
during fall rush and initiated 45 of
them. The following spring, we took
10 men in rush and will initiate eight
of them this fall. The brothers are all
looking forward to another strong fall
rush.
This year at the Greek awards, we
did very well. We took first place in
interfraternity relations and first in the
GAMMA award. For those of you who
do not know what GAMMA is, it
stands for Greeks Advocating the Ma
ture Management of Alcohol. We also
placed third in social service and re
ceived an honorable mention in public
and community relations. We are
looking forward to another strong
showing next year.
This year for the Pig Dinner, the
brothers decided to do things a little
differently. We had a joint dinner with
International Headquarters is in the
process of raising money for the
house. The way that they are doing
this is by an extremely new program
called CHEF, or the Chapter House
Endowment Fund. For those of you
who are not familiar with it, bear with
me while 1 briefly explain.
CHEF is a new fundraising option.
It allows you to donate through the
Educational Foundation directly to the
chapter house. The beauty is that the
money you donate is tax deductible.
When enough money is raised, the
house takes out a loan from the Edu
around the house in a while, let me be
the first to tell you that the physical
structure is in dire straits. It is not due
to the negligence of the active mem
bers, but simply because of the fact
that the house is getting old. 1 chal
lenge all of you to do as much as you
can to help restore 1801 East 1 st to the
beautiful structure that it used to be.
With the help of our graduates, the
house will soon be back to the won
derful place that it was when many of
you used to live here.
If you are ever in Tucson, please
feel free to stop by the house for lunch,

are devised according to the size of
call in advance and let us know that
you want to come by for a formal
the loan, and the money is then put
back into the CHEF account, with the
interest going to the International Fra
ternity. Grants can also be taken out of
the fund if the money is going to be
used for scholarship purposes. That
way, we can add a computer facility
onto the house, an addition which is
needed greatly.

so. We hope that many of you gradu

satisfy it by getting involved once
again. Remember that Fiji is "Not for
college days alone."

Upsilon Alpha Social Year in Review
This spring finished another suc
cessful year for Upsilon Alpha. Fiji
was once again second to none in our
social status on campus. The fall se
mester got the year off on the right
foot with many TGs and parties at the
house. The football team stirred up
Phi Gam functions.
Purple Garter was a racing success
at Tucson Greyhound Park, and the
brothers gambled away all of their
money. Spring Fling was a slam dunk
with the women of Delta Gamma, and
the dunk booth we sponsored pros
excitement in the rec hall, which led
pered. For some reason, the winds car
to our annual Kickoff Classic with the
rying "Islander season" blew in a little

time, the Phi Gams were rolling; with
early this year, and palm fronds began
stacking on the basketball court. About
the women ofKA0,we celebrated the
two weeks before Islander, the Phi Gams
Homecoming Week festivities.
Around Westerner time, Fijis were
seen shining up their boots and buck
les, and loud "yee-haw" cries could be
heard echoing around Old Main. Just
when everything seemed to slow down
and the dreaded finals were just
around the comer, in came the ever
greens and Christmas spirits rose as
the bros prepared for the Black Dia
mond. With all of this partying, the
brothers kept their heads, and we be

first place honors from GAMMA for

ter trying to catch up on some lastminute workouts. Alarms blared at 6
a.m. on the big day, and Connie and the
bros could be seen at the Plaza Hotel bar
(only if you knew the secret handshake
to get in!). Islander tumed out as incred
ible as ever, and that familiar Islander
feeling engulfed the courtyard as it has
for decades. After finals, the brothers all
went home to catch up on some muchneeded sleep; there is always next year
to think about.

Islander Turns Into a Homecoming
