Recolonization
Report
Illinois Re-Colonization Effort Begins
On February 17, 2005 a meeting was held in Champaign, Illinois
to discuss the upcoming re-colonization efforts for the Chi lota
Chapter. Eleven graduate brothers were in attendance and the
they will receive detailed information on Phi Gamma Delta and
the expansion process. Over the course of the next few weeks, each
prospect will individually attend three interviews. The recruitment
following chapters were represented: Illinois, DePauw, Colorado
prospects will also attend casual events ranging from sporting
College, Iowa State, Indiana State, and Iowa. During the meeting
we discussed the availability of numerous advisory roles on the
Board of Colony Advisors. We also need a Purple Legionnaire and
events with one another, meals with graduate brothers, etc.
a Graduate Pledge Educator.
Phi Gamma Delta International Headquarters will execute an
expansion project at Illinois with a proven track record of
success. Director of Chapter ServicesJ. B. Coil (Nebraska 2001)
and Field Secretary Kurt Niebuhr (Kansas State 2004) will be in
Champaign throughout March and April 2005 to perform the recolonization process. Brother Goll has served as Director of
Chapter Services since july 1, 2002. During his work with the
Fraternity, he lead the Tulane and Rhode Island re-colonizations,
Kwhich produced pledge classes of 35 and 15 men, respectively.
Phi Gamma Delta's expansion program will begin in March
and is recommendation based. The recommendations will be
solicited from a number of parties. During their first two weeks
on campus, the re-colonization team will make presentations at
every sorority. These sorority presentations historically generate
the largest number of recommendations. In addition, the team
will make presentations to all worthwhile student organizations.
Following receipt of the recommendations, the prospects will
The final weekend will be eventful. The pledging ceremony
will be held Wednesday night and the "Evening with the Fijis"
reception will follow. The reception will be a public relations
effort to introduce the pledge class to the Chi lota and other Phi
Gamma Delta graduates, sorority women, university
administration, and family and friends of the pledges. A goalsetting retreat is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday. Chartering
expectations will be explained, officers will be elected, graduate
advisors will be introduced, and recruitment strategy will be
discussed.
Bids will be extended throughout the expansion process. The
criteria for consideration are scholarship, leadership, athletics,
and gentlemanly character. It is our expectation that within two
years of re-colonizing. Phi Gamma Delta will become the largest
fraternity on the Illinois campus, have the highest CPA of any
fraternity, be a leader in intramural sports performance, lead the
fraternities in philanthropic and community service activities, and
be well respected by the sorority women and administration.
These goals will only be accomplished if the local graduates are
actively involved in supporting the undergraduates.

Tournament Recap
We held our 19th annual Tom jump

Timber Trails Golf Club in Lagrange,
Illinois. A record 74 Chi lota Fijis from the
classes of 1966 to 1983 participated in the
event. In addition, this year our special

Fraternity's plans to re-colonize the Illinois

The groups teed off at noon and play
concluded around 6:30pm. We held the

'1 Support Reviving the Chapter'
Jonathan Flusser '87, senior vice president and regional
manager of commercial banking at LaSalle Bank in Chicago, has
many fond memories of his days as a Phi Gamma Delta
undergraduate. He'd like to see the Chi lota Chapter reinstated,
both for the sake of fellow graduates and for future members.
"I support reviving it, and right now I'm watching from the
sidelines to see if the idea is going to gather steam," he says. "I'd
In particular, he misses the annual Pig Dinner gatherings of
graduates at the house. "That used to be a hugely attended
event. Everybody would get together and trade stories. It would
be great to have that again."
|on credits the chapter with helping him gain important
experience that has continued to aid him since graduation, such
as in community service, leadership and social skills. "You don't
know you're learning those things, at least initially. But when you
get to be a junior or senior, you understand you're going to have
to work hard, graduate and get a job," he says.
"I learned to establish a balance of school, work, sports and
having a girlfriend. My best semesters were when I was taking 18
hours, had a job and was playing rugby. Iwas at my best when I
had a lot going on, and if you can carry that over into your life
^fter graduation, it serves you well."
jon joined the fraternity because he had attended high school
>/ith some of the members, and many of the men had
backgrounds similar to his own. "I joined right after high school,
and I lived in the house the entire four years. I never lived
anywhere else while at college," he says.
He served as pledge chair for a time, and lateras secretary
and then vice president. He was always deeply involved in sports.
"We were the University of lllinojs champions in Ultimate
Frisbee two years in a row; there were more than 50 teams
competing. Ialso played intramural football and indoor soccer,
and I played rugby for four years," he says. "We won at
regionals, went to the nationals and finished second in the nation
in collegiate rugby. We helped the rugby team get recognized as
a club sport at the university."

also volunteer with the North American
Challenge Cup (NACC), a national sailing championship for

NACC event becoming successful and what it is today.")
Jon and his wife, Ella, have three children: jon Jr. (10), Madeline
(6 1/2) and Daniel (2 1/2), and another due this June.
His hobbies are many, and primarily athletic. He has run in 10
Chicago Marathons, goes mountain biking and road biking, plays
golf, and has been avidly racing sailboats for 20 years. He takes a
hiking/climbing trip once a year (so far taking on 12 mountains
of greater than 8,000 feet) and a skiing trip once a year, with a
group of friends.
He stays in contact with several fellow Chi lota graduates,
including his sailboat racing companions jim Armstrong and
Sam Miller '86. He also sees John O'Connor '87 and jerry
Cleary '86 regularly, and a number of others from time to time,
"jim Armstrong and I coach for the soccer team that we both
have daughters in," he says. "He lives a block from me."
jon would like to hear from more men in his pledge class. "It
would be nice to know where others in my pledge class are and
what they're doing," he says. "I'd be glad to hear from any of
them." He can be contacted by e-mail at
