continual changes happening here at

Welcome to the beginning of a
new program year publishing The
Cougar Fiji. The members of Pi
Mu Chapter of Phi Gamma Delta
at Washington State University are
proud to bring you this publication.
Fiji brothers are committed to
providing our graduates with a
newsletter twice a year, covering
grow and move in positive directions.
We have overcome great obstacles
within the past year so that our frater
nity may prosper at Washington State
University as well as maintain good
standing with Headquarters and uni
versity officials. Finally, we have set a
positive foundation upon which to build
our fraternity.
As you may or may not know. Pi
Mu Chapter has been struggling to sur
vive in the rapidly changing Greek com
munity here at WSU. These changes
are so dramatic that Pi Mu has been
forced to advance itself from the ste
reotypical idea of fraternity life and
back to the fundamental values that
are the pillars of Phi Gamma Delta.
Past traditions have changed, mem
bers have changed and the fraternity
has changed. Past traditions and prior
culture that was tolerated within Pi Mu
caused us to come under much scru
tiny from both Headquarters and
WSU. We have since rectified these
problems and have begun fostering an
environment conducive to the promo
tion ofour members and their progres
sion through college life.
Over the past summer we were
able to recruit a 22-man pledge class
that is the future of Pi Mu and whom I
believe will be the cornerstone to mak
ing Pi Mu great. Only halfway through
their pledge semester,they continually
surprise membership by staying posi
tive in every light. Their optimism
drives those of us who have experi
enced less than joyful times to remain
ecstatic.
Given these changes, there are

Pi Mu Gains Fire Sprinkler System
In February and March of 2003, we received our three
bids to install an automatic fire sprinkler system at the Pi Mu
house. They were $27,900, $45,169 and $34,033. We were
surprised by the spread ofthe bids. We selected the low bid.

We now have some ongoing costs for annual inspections
of the sprinkler system ($290/year) and the new alarm
system ($149.50/year). Ongoing savings of$2,264 less ongo

ing expenses of $290 and $149.50 will net us a savings of
$1,824.50 per year.
We will payfor the cost of installing the new sprinkler
system with just under 14 years of insurance discounts.

per year. We will also be receiving a new discount, which is
only for two years (for systems installed after April 2003 to
encourage chapters to install new sprinkler systems) of an
additional 20 percent, saving us $1,422 for two years(ending
$27,900 minus $2,844(two-year 20 percent discount)equals
$25,056 divided by $ 1,824.50. Ofspecial note: we were one
of the first houses on campus to install an automatic fire
sprinkler system.

House Corp. Expands Scholarship Program
Members of the House Corporation Board have expanded
the scholarship program that benefits undergraduate brothers
at Pi Mu Chapter. The program,called Dollars for Scholars, is
described below.
All brothers are welcome to contribute to this expanded
scholarship program. Checks should be made payable to Delta
Phi Gamma and mailed to: Dollars for Scholars,do Delta Phi
Gamma, PO Box 2103, Redmond, WA 98052. Please mark
"scholarships" in the memo field of your check.
Many thanks in advance for helping to support this vital part
of Fiji life at Pi Mu Chapter at WSU.

12. Chapter has all tenants sign an annual written housing
contract and collects a security deposit.
13. Chapter collects 100 percent of accounts receivable
from both in-house and live-out members and pledges.
14. Chapter passes all property inspections (eight per
year)for both facility cleanliness and maintenance.
15. Chapter pays the full rent on time and at fair market
rates, regardless of whether or not every bed is rented.
16. Chapter follows a system for room selection and
immediate move-in if the house is not at capacity. The
chapter fills the house to its live-in capacity, pledges 20 and

initiates at least 80 percent ofall pledges(80 percent ofthose

whom pledge cards are sent to headquarters.)

17. Chapter shall achieve and maintain all requirements
for having freshman live-in status at WSU.
The Chapter's Commitment:

members/pledges who earn a 3.50 or higher GPA.
5. Has all members and pledges sign grade release forms
for each semester, and turns them in to Greek Life.
6. Lists all members and pledges on house roster for each
semester and sends them to the House Corporation.
7. Chapter has all members and pledges participate in at
least one non-chapter on-campus activity.
8. Chapter has all members and pledges contribute at least
10 hours of community service each semester.
The House Corporation's Commitment:
Each year the chapter meets the above standards, and is
not sanctioned by WSU or Headquarters, the House Corpo
ration will fund scholarships 2-4 (described below). Each
year the chapter fails to meet the above standards, or if the
chapter is sanctioned by WSU or Headquarters, the House
Corporation may or may not choose to fund any part of
scholarships 2-4, to any level of funding (0-100 percent). If
the chapter fails to meet the above standards, the House
Corporation may require the chapter to explain what went
wrong, any corrective action taken and why the chapter
should receive any of scholarships 2-4 that year.

Congrats to Our Scholarship Winners
Undergraduate brothers who received scholarship awards
in 2005 from the House Corporation were recognized at the
Pig Dinner held March 4,2006, in Pullman.
Our congratulations go to the brothers who received Dol
lars for Scholars awards in spring 2005 and/or fall 2005.
They include: Rob Borden($250),Jason Carter($450),Paul
Carey ($250), Ty Cook ($450), Gilbert Corsey($200), Kyle
Ewing ($450), Joshua Hargrove ($200), Kyle Hintz($200),

The report by 2006 Dollars for Scholars Chair Bruce Ellis
is as follows:
Not all eight chapter standards were met for spring or fall
semesters. Nevertheless, the House Corporation voted that
this year it will fund the spring 2005 semester scholarships at
80 percent of a potential $250, and the fall 2005 semester
scholarships at 100 percent of a potential $250.
The House Corporation voted not to fund the Most Im
proved Scholarship this year.
These scholarship awards are first credited to the under
graduate student's house account and, at the end of the
spring semester after all of his financial obligations to the
chapter have been satisfied, the remainder is paid to the
student.
