Dear Brothers,
I address you as the newly “elected” President of the Tau Iota Foundation, or the Housing Corporation, as often called. Currently, Tau Iota
has but three members including myself, the ever solid Larry Watson, and Zach Finn. I am writing to appeal for greater involvement from
the graduates of Iota Sigma. There are three ways of supporting the much improved undergraduate chapter—time, talent, or treasure.
Today, I am asking for your time or talent. I know that our time is at a premium due to work and family, but the chapter needs and deserves
the strong support from its graduates.
Up to this point our efforts to help have been grossly negated by poor chapter finances. The undergraduates are turning things around and
the house is in need of some tender loving care and improvements. My goals are high for Housing Corp., but achievable with your
assistance:
1) Create a complete board including a new chapter relations position.
2) Certify all safety standards throughout the house.
3) Review all plumbing concerns and repair.
4) Renovate the chapter room within 3 years.
5) Start a regular fundraising event for Housing Corp.
6) Create an endowment for future expansion projects.

Welcome to the Iota Sigma Spotlight – interviews with graduate brothers of the Iota Sigma chapter. Our inaugural spotlight is on Brother
Robert “Bob” W. Shenberger, class of 1976.
Robert W. Shenberger has been with RCI (Resort Condominiums International), a Cendant Company, for twenty-four years. He is the
Director of Global Production and Circulation. His responsibilities include overseeing the production and circulation in Kettering, England,
Mexico City, Mexico, and Asia Pacific for all RCI publications. This covers 3.2 million members in 96 countries. Also, he has taken the
magazine Endless Vacation from a circulation of 180,000 copies to over two million.
Bob began his lifetime of experience at Indiana State University by earning a bachelor’s degree in printing management technology with a
minor in packaging. He also holds an MDS from the University of Tennessee-Kingsport, 1978.
Bob joined the Iota Sigma chapter after he transferred to ISU from Purdue University. He said there
were just weren’t enough women at the primarily-male engineering school, and since growing up in
West Lafayette he was tired of being a “townie.” His father shipped him off to Indiana State with
the sure-footed advice of, “Whatever you do, Bob, don’t be an SAE.” Luckily, Bob’s hometown
friend, Greg Lane (1976), introduced him to Phi Gamma Delta. Bob sends his best wishes to Brother
Lane who was recently married on a Caribbean island to his college sweetheart.
Bob recalls, “It was a tough time as many college students were veterans of the Vietnam War. We
really had to be careful as brothers were adjusting to not being in that environment – it was tough
being a pledge then. However, the best thing about Phi Gamma Delta is that we all really cared for
each other. We always made sure to help each other out academically, personally and socially any

Partner in Excellence Award
Bob met his wife Joan (Cox) Shenberger, when Phi Gamma Delta was paired with Alpha Sigma
Alpha for the 1973 Campus Review. Several of his brothers, he adds, are now married to Sigma Kappa’s or ASA’s. As always there are some
shining moments of chicanery as Bob calls to mind the events after asking Joan to marry him. “The brothers tried to shave her name in my
chest, being a hairy creature and all. They got the J shaved in but that’s all. Shortly after, I had to complete my physical for my co-op at Eli
Lilly. I was the featured entertainment as the doctor called in about eight nurses as I retold to the story.”
Even though 1206 South 5th Street offered some great times, it teaches more than we often know. “Phi Gamma Delta really taught me the
importance of societal graces; how to be a gentleman and conduct myself in a social setting.”
When asked if there was anything he would do differently about his undergraduate days and his professional life, Bob replied, “I might have
studied just a bit harder, but overall I would not have done a thing differently.” Based on Bob’s current success, we can all agree, he seems
to have done the right things during and after college.

All of this is obtainable with your help. Housing Corp. serves as one of the opportunities to give
back to our chapter. As an undergrad, I lived in the house for three years. These wonderful
experiences are the reason I feel so strongly in giving back my time. I am quite sure there are others
that feel the same way.
Opportunities for you to give back:
• Serve on Tau Iota Executive Committee
• Provide advice from a legal, real estate, construction, or finance perspective
• Volunteer for ad-hoc projects as needed (repairs, construction, planning, fundraising,
whatever)
• Let us know you want to be involved, and we will find a way that suits your time and
energy commitments.
Please join me as we assemble our graduates in an effort to make the Iota Sigma chapter of Phi
Gamma Delta last and grow over the next 35 years. If you are interested in serving on Tau Iota,
please contact me at isufiji79@hotmail.com. Hopefully, we will see a large group return for the 35th
Frank Norris Pig Dinner on April 22, 2006 and don’t forget to stay for the Tau Iota meeting on
Sunday morning at 10:00am.

Bob recently returned to Indiana State University in April 2005 to be presented with the Partner in
Excellence Award from the College of Technology. A partner in excellence, according to College of
Technology Dean Foster, is awarded to an alumnus of the college to recognize their outstanding
and long-term support of the College of Technology and Indiana State University.
Bob and his wife are not strangers to serving their alma mater. He currently serves as the Chairman
of the Alumni Advisory Board for ISU Magazine, and Joan is a director on the Alumni Association
Board.
Bob is in a great position to answer why a brother should be involved with Indiana State
University and the Iota Sigma chapter, especially with so many competing interests, which
include family, career, and charities. He advises: “The brother has to feel welcomed and
appreciated for what time, money, or advice he can provide. Brothers need to remember
what the chapter did for them when they were in college and support the chapter so it can
continue to do that for others.” When asked how to reconnect, Bob puts it simply, “Come
back to Pig Dinner. Call your pledge brothers and ask them to come back to visit with you.
Relive the great times.”
When asked what one thing he could say to the brothers out there, Bob responded, “Graduates,
I am proud to be a FIJI and miss hearing from and seeing all of you. Undergraduates, live
your dreams and go for the star. Plus, don’t be afraid to say “hello” to the old guys at the
Homecoming tents.

Greetings from ISU!
In addition to serving as Executive Director of Alumni Affairs at Indiana State, I’ve also
been Faculty Advisor for ATO. Last night I met with our fall Pledge Class regarding Chapter
history; I concluded with the following remarks…
“Thirty-six years ago I was an ATO pledge. Those friendships I made then have survived
through the years. We shared something special.” “We were the best. However, let me
assure you every man and woman who are fraternity/sorority members feel the same way.
Throughout your life as you meet people both professionally and socially, if they’ve had a
Greek experience, regardless of their letters, there will be a “spark” of recognition and a
special bond between you.”
“In my work as Alumni Director, I’ve found a greater proportion of the ISU alumni volunteers
are Greeks. In most instances they were much more involved in campus activities and feel
a greater connectivity to campus. They are also among the most generous donors to the
University.”

\r\nChapter Report from the President
Over the last few months the Iota Sigma Chapter of The Fraternity of Phi Gamma Delta has grown more as a chapter than most could
ever believe. We have completed numerous tasks and milestones we set last spring. People may have overlooked us or even written us off
as “done for.” However we have showed everyone who has given us another chance and ourselves that we are truly something great.
Throughout the rest of the report, look forward to learning about the state of the chapter, community service and campus involvement,
intramurals, and finally, a brief synopsis of character we have throughout the chapter.
First, let me start off by saying that we have pulled off almost a complete 180 in less than
a semester. Last spring at our Bi-annual Housing Corporation meeting in the Student Union
we talked about everything that has to do with this chapter. The graduates and undergraduates
were split up into two meetings and then joined at the end to talk about what we figured out
and where we stood. Through the meeting we got much needed and improved graduate support.
We made plans for this semester and have followed them almost to a T. We have rid ourselves
of dead weight and now feel we have the nucleus and surrounding crew to create a work of art
as far as fraternities go. The entire ten person pledge class has stepped up to roles, as actives
they were not ready for and have come through in the clutch many times. We are now starting
to pay off our debt to IHQ.
Next, I made a point last spring for every member of the chapter to join at least one
campus oriented organization. This has been fulfilled and some are going above and beyond
Winning runners of the 2005 Turkey Trot.
the call of community service. We have done numerous projects throughout campus and most
The chapter is presently in first place in
of all, our community. For example, we cleaned up trash as well as did Day of Caring with the
men's intramural competition.
ISU Women’s Soccer Team, cut trees around Terre Haute for the TREES Organization, had 10
members volunteer to coach youth flag football for the YMCA for over two months, have 4 members coaching youth indoor soccer for the
YMCA, have two volunteer officials at the Boys and Girls Club, had members assist in Disaster Relief in Evansville after tornado earlier
this month, are chaperoning a middle school dance in December, and have donated a large amount of canned goods to the Shelburn Church
of God. As far as campus involvement goes we helped set up and put on an IFC function, had two members in BMOC (Big Man on Campus)
which was ZTA’s major philanthropy, have three members who are sorority sweethearts, donated money to the Domestic Violence Awareness
week for RHA earlier this year, and have members in the Student Government Association. For all of those who are not aware, we have two
bikes hanging in the Ballyhoo at the moment. One for tandem last year and the most recent, the trike bike. The trike race was the first we
have ever won throughout our 35 year existence at ISU. In qualifications, we shattered the old team track record and individual record, both
of which were held by Pike.
Intramurals have been a strong point for us throughout the last two years. Last year we finished in second place by a mere two points.
This year, we have gotten even stronger and sit atop the lead by more than 300 points to our closest competition, Pike. We have won
Ultimate Frisbee, Track & Field, Tennis, and the Turkey Trot 2.2 mile run. Also, we placed second in the Fall Softball Tournament and
Dodge ball. We placed fourth in Flag Football respectively. We are currently in the middle of
Volleyball and are 3-0.
Finally, we have made strides that cannot be measured by the naked eye. They cannot be
seen by what has been done in the community, on campus, or even in the intramural sports. If
one looks deep into the heart of this chapter, he will see it bleeds royal purple and gold. We are
proud of what we have become and hope you are proud of us too. I hope this newsletter opens
the door to some of the graduates who may have shut us out. We would be extraordinarily happy
to see everyone back at the 35th Annual Frank Norris Pig Dinner. Your support is what we need
and what shows us you all really care. Remember, Phi Gamma Delta is not for college days alone.

Did you know...
What was the largest Iota Sigma meeting in the chapter’s history?
At 8:30 pm on August 12, 1992 six-hundred Phi Gams were present when these words were uttered, “...we
will now call this meeting of the Iota Sigma Chapter of Phi Gamma Delta to order...” Brothers from across
the United State and Canada were present when Kirby Bilsland, Kevin Fleetwood, Jason Hoggatt, and Jerry Isles were brought
into the mystic folds of Phi Gamma Delta and the Iota Sigma chapter at the 144th Ekklesia in Washington D.C. Brothers Greg
Hubble and Mike Raisor “played” pledges for the model initiation ceremony as well. And now you know.

Iota Sigma announces new graduate dues program
All Iota Sigma graduates are asked to remember their vows to Phi Gamma Delta
and the great times and opportunities they were provided.
Are you kidding me—Iota Sigma graduate dues?
No. For the past several years the undergraduate chapter has been responsible for managing, running, and
funding the graduate relations programs and activities of Iota Sigma. Sometimes they make money, sometimes
they break even, and more often than not—they lose money. Sometimes the events are great, sometimes
they are not.
Our graduate events should not be on the backs of the undergraduates, and more importantly—their dues
should not pay for our graduate relation program!
What will the dues be used for, and who is managing them?
Iota Sigma graduate dues will be used to augment the graduate relations program of the Iota Sigma chapter.
The funds will be managed by the elected board of the Tau Iota Foundation (Housing Corporation) for use in
Homecoming, Pig Dinner, More Newsletters like this one, and other expenses that directly impact the graduate
relations of Iota Sigma.
How much are you asking for?
We are asking for a minimal amount of $20.00 per year from every graduate of Iota Sigma. You are free, and
encouraged to, give within your means to support the organization that we hope gave so much to you.
Ok, sign me up—how can I help?
That was easy. Visit www.isufiji.com and go to the Graduate Relations Page
Enter your information and desired donation amount and frequency. Pay a one time amount, or schedule
payments.
I would rather give money directly to the chapter, or for scholarships, or house improvements.
Great. You can do that too! Give us some time to re-develop those very important programs, and locate the
graduate brothers to run those initiatives. The graduate leadership of Iota Sigma has made graduate relations
the most important focus for us at this point in time. We have to have more “grad-power” to run those
programs.
The power of numbers.
If every brother gave just $20 Iota Sigma would have over $6,000 to invest in our graduate relations efforts.
If every brother gave what a Starbucks latté costs every month ($3.50ish) x 12 months x 400 graduates=$16,800
for Tau Iota to use in graduate relations, fundraising/scholarships, improvements, chapter support, etc.
How about $12.06? =$57,888
All we seek is $20.00 a year
maybe 18.48 a month? =$88,704
