TABLE OF CONTENTS
As we finish out the 2018-2019 school year, the Chi Upsilon chapter is
in better shape than ever. Our beautiful chapter house is in great shape thanks to

2019 Pig Dinner................................5
Manager, Doug Cipriano. Over the next several months leading up to the annual
Graduate Brother Update...............6
Norris Pig Dinner we hope to put the finishing touches on the long renovation
process, so as to provide our undergraduate and graduate brothers with a place that
everyone can enjoy and take pride in. On the subject of Pig Dinner, an unforeseen
scheduling conflict will prevent us from hosting the event in the Quadrangle Club this year. As always, the dinner will be
held on the day of IF Sing, which falls on June 8. However, rather than the Quad Club, the dinner will take place in the back
yard of our very own chapter house. It will be fully catered and covered by a large tent, and will begin at 5:00 PM in order to
give us ample time to make it to Sing at 7:00.
Thanks to the help of all of our brothers and graduate advisors, my first semester as the sitting chapter president
went off without a hitch. I am particularly grateful for my fellow cabinet members; over the past few months Dante Nepa,
Jameson Clay, Pat Rogers, and Doug Barkauski have worked tirelessly to ensure that our chapter continues to be a place
that builds good brothers and great men. Through their efforts and those of our many talented brothers, we have continued
to build upon our chapter’s reputation on the University of Chicago’s campus as men of excellence. Our brothers have
excelled in the classroom, in their various athletic pursuits and in our philanthropic efforts. Through their generosity, we
placed first in Pi Beta Phi’s annual Arrowfest fundraiser in support of children’s literacy. Over the course of the next two
quarters, I look forward to expanding upon the success of our chapter alongside my cabinet and all of our brothers.
Best,
Michael Hiestand

\r\nBROTHERS ABROAD
By: Matthew Nagler (2022)
The Bernard J. DelGiorno Civilization Program allows students to spend their autumn
quarter in Rome. This program would not be possible if not for the generous contributions of
our brother Bernard J. DelGiorno (1954), after whom the program is named. This students
in this exquisite program get to study Roman history in the very place in which it happened.
Courses offered in this program are very diverse, including History of the Roman Republic,
History of Christian Rome, and Renaissance and Baroque style art. In order to aid students in
connecting with their surroundings they also learn Italian.
This program fulfills its promise of immersing students in Italian culture- whether it
is ancient or current. Classes are taught in a large palazzo in the vicinity of the Colosseum.
Palazzo refers to the architectural style renaissance Rome where wealthy families built elaborate
and beautiful mansions in the 19th and 20th century. This location gives students the unique
opportunity to study in the very setting that they are learning about. Moreover, students
fortunate enough to be in this program enjoy weekend excursions to a variety of historical
sites. Most notably, students get to visit Pompeii and Herculaneum- two cities devasted by the
volcanic eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. Herculaneum is best known as one of the few
ancient cities to be preserved and very intact and have very little later modifications. Pompeii,
contrastingly, is the site of excavated ruins that were well preserved by the volcanos blast.
This past Autumn quarter, two brothers, Gray Sutton (2020) and Drew Falk (2019),
were fortunate enough to attend the program. Brother Gray had this to say about the program:
“Rome is really interesting because the city seems to exist in four different times at once.
There’s ancient, medieval, renaissance, and modern Rome all physically present at the same
time. So, the city itself seems unsure of a singular identity but visiting the place is special
because you get to see all these eras coexist centuries later.”
While Drew Said:
“Rome was super cool. The living arrangements were great, and we got to see the Coliseum
every morning on the way to class. Huge shout out to Brother Bernie for being the
namesake of this program. I cannot emphasize enough what an amazing experience it is.”
Dear Brothers,
The Oaxaca program gets second fiddle to Barcelona, but I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my
time here. First, I’d say that having a host family is extremely underrated. They treat you like
you’re actually a part of the family, which is nice when you’re so far from home. Second, and
even more exciting is that the excursions to different ancient ruins and sites really make the
quarter worthwhile. This is my first time out of the country, and to have the opportunity to
see places that I’ve only read about in books is pretty sweet; like the pyramids in Teotihuacán
(which conspiracy theorists claim that the
aliens helped build) are pretty insane.
My favorite part of the quarter was
going on a weekend beach trip with some
fellow students to Puerto Escondido. As an
individual with a fair amount of melanin,
I was surprised to find myself with a real
sunburn! All in all, Oaxaca has been a great
time, but I can’t wait to get back for spring
quarter with the brothers. I miss everyone!
Fraternally,
Austin Maltbia

GRADUATE BROTHER UPDATE: ADAM BUTTERFIELD (2015)
By: Ryan Martin (2022)
After graduating in 2015, Adam Butterfield (2015) hasn’t gone far from home.
Since his time as an undergraduate at the University of Chicago, Adam has
stayed close to Hyde Park working in downtown Chicago. He currently works for
SpiderRock Advisors, where he has enjoyed working for over two years. According
to Adam, the most rewarding part of his job has been seeing the growth and
development his team has had since first starting in 2016. Adam says, “SpiderRock
has been a great experience thus far. Being part of a boutique asset management
company from its early days and seeing the growth and penetration into the
wealth management industry has been a unique and rewarding past couple of
years. Seeing how the team has grown and developed together has definitely been
a highlight.” Furthermore, Adam credits his optimism and resilience in his early
career to his undergraduate time at U of C. Adam was a member of both Fiji and
the basketball team. He mentions how fulfilling the memories and experiences
were as an undergraduate, and how close those experiences brought everyone together in college and now presently
in the workforce. Adam says, “Some of my best friends and funniest memories came from the basketball team and
other guys in the house. Some of my worst memories as well! The relationships you make in college do last and I’ve
been really lucky to have so many close friends in the city post-graduation. As for my career, the ups and downs you
experience as an undergrad and athlete help keep you level headed throughout professional life.” Adam’s experience
at UChicago and being a brother of Fiji hasn’t been forgotten. In fact, Adam still connects with Fijis all the time. He
currently lives with Chis Kessling (2017) and Brian Duffy (2014) in Chicago, and he connects with 10-15 other
brothers on the weekends or through sporting events. Adam emphasizes the rewards of being a part of a fraternity
both socially and in his career. Phi Gamma Delta has and will always be his home for a network of great people and
memories.
