You Can Help with Epsilon’s Fall Rush Efforts!
Rush Weekend will take place from Friday,
August 5th through Sunday, August 7th in
Wilmington. We will provide lodging and
transportation throughout the weekend to those
in attendance.
On Friday night, we will go to dinner at
a restaurant in Wilmington and then have
some fun at Jungle Rapids Amusement Park.
Saturday we will travel by boat to Masonboro
Island, where we will spend most of the day on
the beach. This will be a wonderful opportunity
to relax and meet brothers in a casual and laid
back atmosphere. Later on Saturday we will grill
out at a private home and then all go by bus
to a local restaurant, which we have rented out
with a band performing.
Please send your rush recommendations to:

As you can see, our contributions have seen
a steady decline over the past four years.
We appreciate the loyal support that we’ve
had this year from the brothers listed below.
But we can’t rely on their support alone. We
need participation from all of our graduate

\r\nGraduate Profile
From Father to Son, Phi Gam Stays in the Family
Frederick Dula ’72 says that without the
fraternity and the experiences that came with
it, he would not be who he is today.
“Becoming a Phi Gam was the best thing
that happened to me during my years at
Chapel Hill,” he said.
Fred was introduced to Phi Gam by Allen
Tanner ’72 and John Vanderbloemen ’72.
After meeting brothers John Goldfinch ’72,
John Merritt ’72, Bruce Sharpe ’72, John
Woodall ’72, Rusty Carter ’71, Charlie
Brindell ’71 and Warner Perry ’71, he realized Phi Gam was the perfect match for him.
Through Phi Gam, Fred met some close
friends that he still keeps in contact with
today, including Judge Allen Cobb ’74
and Allen Tanner. He also got to know his
mentor, Dr. Jerome C. “Pop” Cashion, who
guided him through college and the fraternity
and helped him achieve his dreams of
attending medical school.
Fred remembers experiencing the “Hard
Core” pilgrimage to Charleston with Dr.
Cashion, one of the more outstanding
memories he has of his undergraduate days.
midweek road trips and another trip to D.C.
also stand out.
“My grades improved even as I had more
fun than I could possibly have had without
the fraternity, making for a complete college
experience,” he said.
Fun was even found on the FIJI island
bamboo runs, he said, which mostly took
place in the middle of the night. He tried
to involve himself with Phi Gam as much as
he could, always helping with any clean-up,
painting or repair work.
Because of his hard work, he was given
both the “Best Pledge Award” and the “L.J.
Phipps” award given to a senior, awards he
appreciates to this day.
Fred recommends that all young men
entering the University of North Carolina
consider joining Phi Gam.
“The friendships and connections they
will make, and what they will learn about conducting themselves in all business and social
situations will serve them well the rest of their
lives,” he said. “They will meet the most interesting and accomplished people and will always
have Vance Hall to draw them back to Chapel
Hill. And did I mention the fun they will have?
The bonds they make with their pledge class
will last forever.”
Fred continues to be involved today,
especially since his son followed in his
footsteps and pledged Phi Gam. Because of
this connection, Fred knows how expensive it
can be to run a fraternity today. Remaining
active as a graduate brother and making
financial contributions to the fraternity is
something he believes is important in order
for everyone to have a house to come back to.
“It is extremely important to help these
young men have a well-kept great place to
live and socialize,” he said. “We all need
this house to always be there where we as
graduates can see our brothers and have great
times.”
Apart from financial contributions, Fred
has provided his hospitality to Phi Gam as
well. Pledge class trips are usually taken to the
beach or mountains, but he provided his own
house for his son’s pledge class trip, taking in
almost half of the fraternity.
After earning his degree in pre-med and
a Bachelor of Arts in History in 1972, Fred
graduated from the University of North
Carolina School of Medicine in 1981 and
is a practicing radiologist. He also serves as
president of Piedmont Radiological Associates
in Salisbury.
He has a wife Lynn, a daughter Caroline
and a Phi Gam son, who is also studying
pre-med and hoping to attend medical school
after his senior year. Fred says he is able to
relive his Phi Gam days by having his son live
there for four years, and said, “Phi Gamma
Delta is not for college days alone.”

A Look Back More than 60 Years
Thank you to Dixie Greene ’48 for submitting this photo of the 1950 Pledge
Class of Epsilon of Phi Gamma Delta.
He writes, “I entered UNC as a
freshman in August 1944. By the
fall of 1945 a lot of these Phi Gams
began to show up at UNC having
been fortunate enough to get quick
discharge from the three marching
on military. What a natural and fine
bunch of guys for me to get to know
early on. I’m proud to say even
though some guys were three to six
years older than me, I personally got
to know them with pleasure.
Then after graduation and going
to grad school for a year, I went
to work for General Motors and
was assigned to live in the Raleigh
area for six years. This enabled me
to relive and travel to Chapel Hill
frequently and I got to know all the
Phi Gams up until 1955. I’m the first
one on the top row of the Phi Gams
in 1950…I was in grad school.”
